Sony is adding Siren to PS Plus Premium from 15th October, which is potentially huge news. This is because the PS2 survival horror is actually already part of the subscription, as it was ported to the PS4 in 2016. The Japanese giant pulled the plug on its ill-fated PS2 on PS4 programme after fans complained of shoddy emulation and a lack of features, but this proves it’s willing to re-release games in its new emulator.
Why is this significant? Because it means titles like Twisted Metal Black, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, and crucially Ape Escape 2 – which is currently broken in PS5 backwards compatibility – could eventually be re-released in the new emulator as well.
The new emulator – while far from perfect – is superior to its predecessor because it performs better, has rewind functionality and save states, and allows you to toggle between PAL and NTSC releases. In some instances in the past, like with Ape Escape 2, the platform holder only ported the European game code, which runs at a slower 50Hz compared to its American alternative.
While we’re eager to see new retro games added to Sony’s ecosystem, it’d be great to see all of these old ports updated eventually as well. Our only concern is that the Japanese giant’s generally only adding two to three titles per month, which means it’s going to take years to amass a decent library of classic content at this pace.

I really tried playing this game as i am huge fan of horror games, however couldnt really get around the gameplay. Will try again this time.
@BloodyBlact Might be a bit more manageable with rewind and the save states.
We might get twisted metal black when season 2 of the show releases. Hopefully it has A platinum.
@Americansamurai1 That'd be great. Hopefully all the other Twisted Metal titles, too. I know it's not a good one, but I've never played Small Brawl for instance.
@get2sammyb yeah small brawl is the only tm I haven't played either, was occupied with tm black back in the day lol. Might be hard for them to port 3 and 4 due to the soundtrack.
I honestly prefer the Vita version of a lot of the old PS2 ports, you don’t mind the dodgy emulation as much.
This is amazing news now PUT SIREN 2 ON THE STORE YOU COWARDS!!!!
I just want to play Siren Bloodcurse god dammit
@Keyblade-Dan they might save that for next Halloween. I know it got rated but look how long it took them to add dino crisis.
Yeah, I think PS2 and PS3 games will keep coming to PS5 and PS6. The reason why I think so is that shortly before I sold my Ally I was using a lot of emulators and right before I got rid of it one of the most prominent sites for PS3 roms shut down the rom section citing some obscure agency demanding they do so. Something tells me Sony finally realised the potential that still lies within the dormant PS3 franchises and this move may mean they will be bringing them back, so we can pay for them again on PS5/6. I would buy a lot of PS3 titles if they ever released on PS5/6 in a heartbeat. Hope it happens.
Any idea if those who own the other version will get this one?
Isn't this the emulator that only runs games at 480p or something like that? Is this the same one used for Tomb Raider Legend? With all the power in the PS5, I would think they should run at a native 1080p or 4K. PCSX2 can certainly do that.
Still hoping for a new Siren game but this is fine for now. We do need more of those classic PS2 horror games on modern platforms. SIREN 2, the Fatal Frame 1,2 and 3, Fromsoft's Kuon, etc.
Silent Hill 3 and 4 would be nice as well but with the positive reviews SH2 remake is getting, there's a high chance those two will also get the remake treatment
I completely agree with this point. I believe they will atleast port there first party titles to the new emulator. You gotta read between the lines with this version of Sony.
@Loamy I tried playing it back when the old Playstation streaming was a thing on ps4 and I couldn't play it due to how laggy it was.
if we arent getting disc compatibility with these consoles then can we at least get max payne 2 in the lineup? my trophy cabinet feels wrong having just mp and mp3.
That's great news. I do prefer using pcsx2, but I do indulge on ps plus premium for the trophies.
What I wish however is wide-screen patches for some of these games.
@Ashina getting those classic ps2 survival horror games everyone goes gaga over but never played would be nice to deflate the laughably high prices physical copies go for online. i know rule of rose is in a precarious legal position and will never see the light of day but the rest of these games should get a second wind
Just give us an official ps2 emulator app that supports physical disc's too. I'd pay you sony
@evasdf There's certainly a chance it could happen!
TimeSplitters Future Perfect is the best PS2 game emulated so far. In terms of how it plays. Hope more games and emulated to it level (or better)
Had the odd bugs glitches and crashes with most others but TS FP I didn't have single issue
Still waiting for Drakengard (with trophies). Make it happen Sony + Square
I only heard of siren blood curse. Was too hard for me.
I hope Sony update Jak 1-3, Dark Cloud 1-2, Ape Escape 2, Rogue Galaxy, and Wild Arms 3.
But it would be nice if they bring some PS2 Classic from PS3 like God Hand, Shinobi, Contra: Shattered Soldier, Fatal Frame 1-3, Maximo, Suikoden 3 & 4, and Haunting Ground. But again, i got the feeling Konami & Capcom gonna remaster some of these games...
@Ashina I would literally kill to get the classic Project Zero/Fatal Frame trilogy on current systems. It's like my joint favourite series with Kingdom Hearts I love them so much (I'm a huge J-HORROR nut) II and V are my favourites
Just need Sony to Release the rest of the Wild Arms Games and Square enix to release Grandia 3 And Xtreme.
@Loamy I fought pyramid head last night in the remake and clinched the entire time. Was dreadfully scared in the lead up to that fight. I feel like I can’t get comfortable with the mechanics and that keeps it feeling fresh constantly. Genuinely didn’t know what to expect in that fight. Pleasantly surprised. I love it so much.
I really loved the horror vibe of Siren, but I could not get the hang of the sight-jacking mechanic.
It's a tough game.
@Nepp67 It's just the PS3 remake that went episodic for some reason of Siren 1 and while the less awkward mo cap of the PS2 version, and PS3 version may look better wasn't as good in some areas of the rest of the game.
As far as I've heard I've never played but always respected it when seeing what horror games are out there.
Do you just want the better looking version or because you used to own Siren Blood Curse and want to re-experience it? They are valid reasons just asking out of curiosity/context.
Otherwise I don't see the point. I'm very weird when it comes to even PS2/Wii/PSP versions and sometimes prefer those of third party games then I do the PS3/360/PC versions as the content or graphics to me is enough for me to go oh it's just a presentation upgrade or different levels/content but the games on old gen are better and the newer gen at the time ones push presentation so much and are less fun.
So why would I want the blu-ray with fancy menus and resolution and so on when the DVD release works perfectly fine is how I see those oddities at least. Which in this day and age in some cases the DVDs are a collectors edition bonus and the blu-ray is the standard edition....... Yet static menus still and less and less features over time.
Bit rates sure, but many go eh streaming or DVD as price or don't care for those benefits.
It's fine to see it 'back' but it already was on here. Being part of the new emulator is fine or on PS5 then just PS4 PS2 program prior is fine but I mean we could hear articles about all past PS4 past of prior PS2 program games moved on and worked in to the new emulator then in-between all the other games source code/licenses they are worked on in-between other things.
Like articles/news like this is 'fine' because new emulator and it working maybe better then the old one put up on PS4 but even still eh. Not that exciting of news really. Also Siren 2 why not offer that as well on there?
Like I'm glad Primal/Mark of Kri are even part of that program because I never hear anyone talk about that compared to other Sony 1 off IPs at all.
We’re never getting ICO rereleased. Sigh.
@SuntannedDuck2 I watched it a long ass time ago when Pewdiepie made a playthrough of it and it made me want to play it, but never got a PS3 at the time. Is Siren that much better? From my understanding it required a community to even figure parts out.
Never played the original but I tried to get into Siren Blood Curse multiple times. One time I made it about halfway through the game.
Incredibly unsettling atmosphere but I'd struggle to call it a good game. It's just a chore to play.
@Playstationdemodisc Same here you could even make money by reprinting PS2 games.
@Juga_Juga This should be a remake like Shadow of the Colossus that would be such a upgrade.
Can we get rid of the dub now?
Whait does that mean that all siren games are available on ps5 or no? I only ever heard that it is a fantastic series. The only one I've ever tried was the one on ps3 i think. Would be nice to have all on one console
@Nepp67
Part 1:
Understandable forgot about seeing others play a game. XD I have not played any entries in the series but from what I've heard from a review I remember from Nitro Rad (he covers a lot of horror games in october and mostly platformers or other types rest of the time but has played a few of the niche PS2 or Wii ones, of course donated for review as some obvious rare expensive ones have been reviewed, Fatal Frame, etc. But others may have better opinions/experiences with the game.
I mean you could emulate them if you have a good enough computer or phone and know how PS2 emulation works but of course yeah that's an 'option' not an ideal one but something.
(I do need to look at other reviews more to compare) from what I remember of the review he said he had more issues with the PS3 version with the sight jacking I think the camera was just a pain, level design or some stuff maybe changed I can't remember, the characters they changed to not only be more varied in types of people, I don't remember if they changed their gameplay much but they aren't not all Japanese characters like the first game (I assume Team Siren were thinking of appealing to a western audience/broadening the types of people on the adventure or more variety of characters then the all Japanese I think it was prior (I can't remember) even though westerners are still happy with a Japanese horror game being what it is, but whatever, even though I think the original Japanese characters were probably made more sense and written better then these other people on holiday or whatever differences they also had in the PS3 version as to why they were here on the adventure, I can't remember their motivations or what they were changed to).
They did change up puzzles I think as some were a bit unclear yes and a guide was more necessary. I think they did fix that but I don't remember. I can't remember if they made it that much easier to communicate it to players like a thing on the wall or a working it out somehwhat still or simplified it/tell you. I can't remember.
Of course the character models look better and less uncanny with the mocap as PS2 tried prior but the character personalities and motivations/actions in the story just weren't as good as the PS2 version so they did change them a fair bit from what I remember as it lost some of the charm or probably changed some events it was going for in the first game. That's as much as I remember at least. He likely explains it better.
Here are all three reviews if your interested:
1 on PS2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=114Ygup5-x4&pp=ygUPbml0cm8gcmFkIHNpcmVu
2 on PS2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhDiWf9mGBI&pp=ygUPbml0cm8gcmFkIHNpcmVu
1 on PS3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s75_blpoRK8&pp=ygUPbml0cm8gcmFkIHNpcmVu
Others maybe didn't have the same experience I'd have to check some more reviews on Youtube or whatever news outlets said about it back in the day but that's just 1 opinion I remember right now.
@Simu001 Only the first Siren or Foribidden Siren in PAL regions was on PS4 via the brief PS2 games they put on there. So I think it's a new emulator to make the game work through that now that the new PS2 emulator has been worked on.
I don't know about Siren 2 or Siren Blood Curse (PS3 streaming it would be IF the case no idea if was part of PS Now prior), but I think it's just Siren 1 at the moment.
They seem to be offering a mix of titles then going ok wait for all PS2 games from the prior PS4 period to be converted as they want to work on other games or mix things up for audiences to experience and also because why work on just the same games for a while then do new ones right it's a bit exhausting and audiences would be waiting a while for something new.
So whether we see Siren 2 or others who knows yet. If Mr Mosquito can get on there anything is possible really.
@Nepp67 Part 2:
That or the episodic approach maybe worked or didn't. But I get they did it episodic to try something different but I think it was also because of Sony's use of the PS store at that time. It's like with Insomniac they 'had' to at some point make a PS Store feature happen, had to have PSP support (aka Resistance 2 with Retribution then say GT5 car transfers or other games that do different things) or a co-op game to push their online service even if PS+ wasn't a thing till later I mean Socom pushed online for PS2 so others did as well so it's why Quest for Booty existed and why the Ratchet spinoff games All For One and Full Frontal Assault/QForce existed, it wasn't just them experimenting after Crack in Time it's because publisher demands.
Same with putting 3D or Move support in games.
So to me I assume the episodic nature wasn't a pick whatever you want as well you want to see the whole story right? Or just give up at whatever point then a wait around (not sure if it was done the Telltale way over time I assume so but I don't remember) but a give us money on the PS store approach. XD
Like episodic games can make sense to pace like Telltale did because of the workflow and always news being on them or customers move on. So something being the vision of a tv show and break up points.
But yeah I don't know how well it sold. I don't know if it was part of PS Now or is part of PS3 streaming (I don't have access to it with PS Deluxe anyway so whatever the list is for US or other streaming compatible regions).
