Stellar Blade is the latest game to join the exclusive club of titles enhanced specifically for PS5 Pro. With the exciting upgrade releasing in less than two weeks (7th November), it won't be too long before we can see what all the fuss is about, our collective minds blown by previously unthinkable (on PlayStation) frame rates and resolutions.
While Shift Up has yet to release the official changelog (thanks, Twisted Voxel), that hasn't stopped the more technically-minded community members from determining what Update 1.008 is about. Stellar Blade will add a High Frame Rate (HFR) Mode, a PS5 Pro-exclusive feature that requires a compatible 120Hz display and the appropriate setting to be enabled. In addition, enhanced versions of balanced and resolution modes will be available.
Will you dive into Stellar Blade again, or have you perhaps been holding out for PS5 Pro? In the comments section below, let us know how you plan to tackle this development.

Ah yes a feature that many PS5 games have, now locked to the pro!
I thought it was photo mode. I'll keep waiting then.
@TechaNinja It's not locked to the Pro artificially, the regular PS5 couldn't run this at 120fps unless the game ended up looking like a PS2 game. Better hardware gets better framerates, there's nothing nefarious about this.
@Matroska So devs can't optimize properly for the PS5 and have to wait for a better revision. Noted.
Silly question - but are all these updates going out for the Pro regardless of whether you're running Pro hardware? I am worried the answer is yes - but if so, I'd be worried about extra (un-needed) bloat eating up my SSD.
It would be nice to consider the Pro as a separate download option (PS4 / PS5 / PS5 Pro)... but I don't think they did that with with the 4 Pro... so not optimistic.
@Medic_alert well done at getting a disc drive... can't buy them here in Oz anywhere (that I can find). Which is yet another reason I think Sony's idea of not having a packed-in box short-sighted and cheap-arse. And congrats on (imminently) ordering a Pro. Hope it's worth it (and even though I have/had a decent PC... in the end, I preferred the simplicity and comfort of console gaming).
@TechaNinja that's not what @Matroska is saying at all. It's stating the obvious that the ps5 whilst a very good console just isn't up to certain things with some games. Sometimes it's not just down to optimisation and if the horse power isn't there it's not possible.
@Medic_alert
Removed - flaming/arguing
Ive beaten this game 3 times now, and will play ir once more just to try the Pro mode
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare Pro enhancements don't really take up space and if they do its MB's not GB's.
@DennisReynolds I get this is a website catering to Playstation gamers and fans, but can you at least take a step back for 2 seconds and stop defending companies that clearly don't go the extra mile to properly optimize for PS5 (some devs are guilty of doing that), and instead are using the PS5 Pro to make up for it. Look at Dragon's Dogma 2 and Alan Wake 2!
It's the same with PC games now, devs are making games unoptimized on PC and relying on DLSS/FSR to "smooth the gap" so to speak.
We need to call out devs deliberately doing this instead of just sitting back and coughing up money for new consoles / pc upgrades, while smiling and saying "this is fine this is how it should be!"
@Medic_alert nah - I'm good. I decided a while ago that I didn't need to rush to buy a PS5 Pro... and the fact that you couldn't get a drive (in my case) at purchase was the final straw. I might grab one up at some point; but I'm not suffering FOMO so I'm happy atm.
@DennisReynolds So I seem to recall a few game updates that were coming out recently that were of the 10+ GB size... not sure how much is "on top" or how much is "replacing". Where they're throwing in significantly different tech (eg now with RT) I'd expect a fairly substantial change in build. How that relates to size, not sure. It shouldn't be like the PS4 > PS4 Pro days, as it's not suddenly expanding asset sizes. ...
And let it begin.
Ohhh... enhancements yeah😉😁😋
I played the latest Doom at 120fps and I preferred 60fps with graphical improvements, a lot of money for so few improvements, 120fps are really noticeable only in racing games.
120 Hz will make Eve jiggle cheeks looks out of this world hehe
I really want to try this game. Hopefully my brother buys it after Christmas, then I’ll have a chance. Or “gift” it to him so I can have the opportunity myself!
@TechaNinja The devs aren't 1st party they're 3rd party so how am i defending Playstation exactly?
Ok Stellar Blade should get a PS3 port and run at 120fps on it and if they can't well just use the magic of optimisation. Baldur's Gate 3 should also get a Switch port at 60fps as well because the magic optimisation can do it if Larian try hard enough. The new Ghost game should also get a PS2 version because optimisation and hard work will get it. Breath of the Wild should also a DS port because again optimisation will do it. Get what i'm saying? A 120hz mode is not possible on base PS5 just like Stellar Blade could never run on PS3.
Also what about Alan Wake 2? You talking about the Pro getting RT? Seriously do you have any idea how demanding RT actually is? Alan Wake 2 is already one of the most demanding games out there so RT was always a no on PS5, i'm actually shocked the Pro version is even getting it.
As for DLSS yeah that's good a thing as it allows far more while still giving a great impression of a good image and such. Native resolutions might sound nice but its too expensive and requires too many compromises.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare Most of the time its just replacing files with new code its why a 10gb update will only increase a game by 1gb or 2.
@Medic_alert What messing about?
@TechaNinja there is literally only like 5 games that can run 120fps on PS5
I may be having a senior moment but im sure i read somewhere that around 80fps is what they are looking at - using 120hz VRR obviously.
Sounds good to me, as above about 90 (depending on person viewing there are diminishing returns).
EDIT - just checked and yes, this is right according to a PS Blog page, the devs state 80fps
@TechaNinja
I agree in part that a number of games recently suffer from poor optimisation.
Not getting a stable enough 60fps is just bad work, and there are things that should have been scaled back in order to achieve it - ie optimisation is poor.
Stellar blade on the other hand is NOT badly optimised, and in the performance mode does run well at 60fps - in fact it is technically pretty good indeed and shows up a lot of other dev teams (eg FF16 whose game is predominently doing the same thing but with comparatively massive issues).
120hz modes are fairly rare outside of Sony 1st party - Hogwarts being 1 notable game. Astro being an odd exclusion, which really should allow uncapping given how perfect its framerate is (ie potentially a substantial overhead).
Hopefully Pro will give devs the extra power to use, and these modes will not be so rare in future.
@LowDefAl
A PS Blog page from a few weeks ago states the devs are indeed aiming for a mode around 80fps using the 120hz.
@LowDefAl I totally agree - but that also means that there might be a fair bit of redundant code floating around. Still - hopefully it's not too much code bulk out.
@DennisReynolds I understand how the updates work - just not sure what else is going on under the hood that needs patching to make it all work smooth (and still retain the standard PS5 compatibility). I'm also curious how much (if any) boost mode will add on to older PS4 games; and whether boost mode is effectively handled the same as it was on the PS4 Pro.
@Medic_alert 699.99 for a console though? In a dry spell for Sony i think you'd have been better off waiting for PS6 or something, these mid-late gen console upgrades don't seem worth it when the next gen is around the corner.
Fantastic game, but I’ve had my fill after finishing it once this year. Maybe down the road…
I cancelled my Pro preorder with Sony. Still waiting to hear about patches for such game as…
-Silent Hill 2
-Armored Core VI
-Elden Ring
-Resident Evil 2 & 3 (remake)
Well, another one to check once I get Pro next year.
Will have to get a TV first though, a Pro without a compatible screen seems like wasted money.
Bonus, this is on my backlog so nice to know it will benefit from my new hardware and I can't wait to play it
@TechaNinja Ah yes, let's ignore the fact that there's far more games that don't have a 120Hz mode because the PS5 can't hit it in those games, and devs can do it with the more powerful PS5 Pro.
@TechaNinja this game can't hit 120 on base. Almost no game can not even first party games.
Curious about the 120 mode since the game already looked amazing on base. Imo the best looking and running game this year.
This actually makes me want to get a Pro. I just enjoy this game so much.
@Deityjester
If 2-3 years is "around the corner" for you, then enjoy waiting.
@TechaNinja
It's true, you're the only rational person in the world. Everyone else just happens to understand how game development works.
@TechaNinja I hope you learned something dude. You clearly know nothing about game development.
