Tabletop gaming enthusiasts will tell you that there's nothing quite like getting together with a few friends and going on fantastical adventures as a party — and that's exactly the kind of vibe that freshly announced PS5 title Sunderfolk is going for.
The pitch here is that up to four players can use their phones or tablets as second-screen controllers, keeping tabs on things like your character stats and inventory, while the journey unfolds on your main display. We're immediately reminded of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and its GBA-enabled co-op.
"Sunderfolk features an unfolding narrative that takes the intrepid adventuring party on a quest through the Sunderlands — starting in Arden, their idyllic hometown village, which they’ve been enlisted to save," reads the press release.
It continues: "As they battle their way through the mines, wilderness, and labyrinths of the game’s vibrant world, players will encounter colorful characters, discover hidden secrets, and develop new collaborative strategies for defeating their enemies."
Featuring some lovely art direction and turn-based, tactical battles, Sunderfolk could be one to watch if you're hankering for a co-op-focused adventure. We should be seeing a lot more of the project as we draw closer to its 2025 release window.

I am very interested in seeing how this turns out. I’m a big tabletop gamer and this looks like it might be great.
The application of smartphones to help with inventory management and character sheets etc. Is such a grand idea, and I really liked that about Crystal Chronicles, with the GBA. It'd be nice to see a few more rpg's try this, and especially local coop ones, so as to alleviate taking up screen space.
@J2theEzzo It’s almost as is if the Wii U was actually a great idea!
This sounds interesting! But I’m a Lone Wolf, a Soul Survivor, a strong independent man who don’t need no friends (I do and am glad to have them, I just prefer to play games by myself) - will it be possible to play single player?
@GamingFan4Lyf The much maligned and forgotten Wii 2.0! Nintendo always innovate, but sometimes they're ahead of the curve!
@J2theEzzo Like when Nintendo refused to use DVD for Gamecube because it saw load times increasing and the optical discs it used were meant to have cartridge-like performance - something that took…what…3 more generations to come back?
@GamingFan4Lyf Ooof, deep cuts! Haha. Man, I loved my gamecube back in the day! Thinking about it, loading times did seem mighty quick back then... 🤔
