There was scepticism when Konami announced Bloober Team was remaking Silent Hill 2 – it’s one of the most beloved PS2 games of all time, after all. But this special episode of PS Underground, showcasing the game’s iconic Flesh Lips boss battle, has left us with our jaws on the floor.
The Polish developer’s basically redone the entire thing here: the new perspective means the boss battle plays completely differently, but we think it’s stuck to the spirit of the source material.
The original saw the lumps of caged meat dangle from the ceiling, and you had to move around in an enclosed space, attacking them. In the remake, the system works similarly, except you need to detach them from the roof beams and then bash the cage open. This alters the dynamic of the battle.

Fans are probably going to have to accept this remake of Silent Hill 2 is reimagining things, but the original still exists for those who want to experience it. We actually reckon this looks really good, and if the rest of the game has been adapted as well as this, it’s going to be an absolute must play.

It's obviously going to look graphically better, it's been 23 years. Hopefully it's still fun to play and is worth the $70 price tag.
I think the way they've altered the gameplay in this battle is really good. It changes the fight, but it still looks amazing.
Yeah silent hill 2 remake is going to be a amazing game.and yes dragon age the veilguard is going to a incredible game.and its going to be bioware comeback.word up son
That headline is a shocker. As bad as, 'You won't believe what they look like now!'
I do think they’ve improved the graphics since that initial trailer. It just misses the certain special sauce graphically that made the PS2 games so oppressive. Possibly due to framing too, camera work is less intentional these days when it comes to cutscenes! Part of that applies to movies as well though, you push digital high-end cameras while not being as creative in terms of cinematography and everything starts to look the same.
This headline is a troll, right? 😅
Look how much creepier the lighting and tight camera angles in the PS2 original make that boss fight. So much more atmospheric.
Honestly just looks sort of goofy in the remake.
@get2sammyb
Ew.
@riceNpea number 4 will shock you.
@Ralizah It’s just an issue with the camera in these modern games in general. Fixed camera angles were designed that way for a reason, I think Resident Evil 2’s remake is the closest I’ve seen to recapturing that within a third person engine, just due to the tightness of the corridors in the police station.
Obviously the remake has better graphics. But the atmosphere in PS2 still looks creepy to this day and it still worth playing too if you're a fan of survival horror genre.
Sadly Konami lost SH 2 & 3 original source code which pretty much killed the hope of SH collection for PS4/5
You're right, the 2001 game looks amazing!
What's blowing my mind is the $70 price tag
@playstation1995 I believe you are half right
the character designs of the lead characters looks pretty bad in the remake. that much is certain.
I am giving them the benefit of the doubt since Bloober has been listening to complaints such as James's face and even Angela's where they basically just changed the angle of the camera.
@Porco Mmm nah James's face actually looks good and especially after the reveal where it made him look like an obvious sad man.
@Nepp67 james is the best in the bunch. but i really don't like the look of angela (looks incredibly generic and bland) and maria (missing that "it" factor) in the remake.
I don't want to be that guy that hauls out "Soul vs Soulless", but I really prefer the older, lower-fi visuals and art style for horror games. I feel like leaving things slightly grittier and less high-def leaves more room for your mind to make it worse, while the remake looks so...sharp? Silent Hill has always been more about what you don't see than what you do, and it doesn't really feel like the right direction to make it so pixel perfect.
That said, the visuals on display are very pretty in a different kind of way, even if I feel like they're less effective. I don't really like the over-the-shoulder RE4 camera they're using, either. But it's not like the original game is gone, it's fine if the remake tries something different. We'll see once it's here.
Yeah I have seen it with movies. They might have a stab at a prequel and it’s like at least make it look of the time, not of these times surely you’ve some filter to apply with all the wizardry now but in terms of silent hill it can be too much clarity, there was a dirty obscurity in the graphics that contributed to the oppressive mystery. The game hinged on a vagueness; when things are too defined SH1 looked like roblox but by the time PS2 rolled around it was just right to be vague enough and doing away with the fixed camera is a huge change Bloober did The Medium with it so I’m a bit surprised by the 3rd person viewpoint. It’s got to be better but I’ve a feeling it’s gona lose the true essence that made it unique……
The article's subheader is wild lmao
But I'm really excited for this.
@Porco Yeah Angela does look kind of generic and Maria I think lacks the sexiness of the original design.
I won't watch this. I won't let me be spoiled before playing this remake myself.
Headline is correct. It’s awfully blowing all my brain cells already. I don’t think I can watch this.
Having a tough time deciding whether to get this or pay twice as much for the authentic PS2 experience... I have a similar dilemma with most remakes and remasters TBH.
Never played it. But based on this video the PS2 version looks a lot cooler. The fixed camera and gritty aesthetic is awesome.
The remake looks … well like every other modern horror game tbh.
(All imo of course)
I’ve never played a Silent Hill game before, but I am looking forward to this.
i can't wait hopefully people support this enough for silent hill 3
I think it looks like a great take on the original SH2 game. Super excited for this one. I imagine I will prefer the PS2 SH2 experience, but happy to see activity with this IP.
Very excited for this remake from Bloober Team. I hope they nail it, but I also am not expecting perfection. Expectations fully in check and ready to revisit a classic with some serious modernization.
@PuppetMaster - Source code isn't needed. BluePoint never used source for their remastered collections of Ico/SotC, MGS etc. They reverse engineered the final code.
https://www.engadget.com/2011-09-23-bluepoint-games-offers-insight-into-mgs-ico-god-of-war-remake.html
@Shigurui So why Konami didn't do it if all they needs to do is reverse engineered the code?
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@Xbox_Dashboard it’s an on-going trend with games these days, they all look too clean with no aesthetic
The only thing will blow my mind is the amount of remakes and lack of ideas there are today.
@Fritz167 Well remakes especially with high production value sold well meanwhile games with new ideas like Kunitsu Gami or Hi-fi Rush didn't sold well.
So, i can't blame devs if they opted for more remakes or sequels when the majority of gamers doesn't give a F* about experimental games.
Devs only follows demand and supply because this days the risk is higher compare to 10-20 years ago. Back then devs can afford to make multiple experimental games despite only 1 or 2 games that sold well. But nowadays, if they made a flop then the risk is either got lay off or the whole studio got closed down.
@PuppetMaster - That would be a question for Konami. I'm just saying that source code isn't needed to remake a game for which retail code exists.
@Shigurui What i heard about reverse engineered is a pretty complex task and needs a lot of time. So that's probably why Konami didn't do SH collection for current gen.
I personally didn't hear much about reverse engineered for a remaster / remake but more for emulator.
I have it pre-ordered and ready to be scared *****!
I wish the original Silent Hill games could be more properly preserved. But I have to say, this does look pretty cool.
It's interesting how with many elements of the original, the technical limitations and related design choices seem to add to the bizarre aesthetic in ways you can't quite put your finger on. But some of those rough edges also make this game a better candidate for "reimagining" than something like Resident Evil 2, which was more conventionally cinematic even in the original release.
I am hoping the changes are thoughtful and limited... If this game sticks the landing though, I hope they'll circle back for a remake of the original Silent Hill, and maybe part 3 as well.
@TomasVrboda £70?? Where you buying it from I’m getting mine for £48 steelbook included
@nessisonett What also works out in RE2's favor is that it amped up the creep factor in many respects and provided new scares that took into account the behind the shoulder camera.
Looking at this boss fight... in the original, it feels like you're trapped in the room with something barely seen and nightmarish. In the remake, it's like playing whack-a-mole, lol.
The Silent Hill games were really ahead of the curve in terms of their camera work. Nothing will ever stick in my brain quite as permanently as the nightmare sequence at the beginning of SH1, which felt like a literal descent into Hell, and the twisting, dynamic camera was a big part of that.
@Ralizah Is that the alleyway you go into at the start of Silent Hill 1? I played that on my Vita for the first time with headphones on and it gripped me with just how genuinely terrifying that first scare was.
@nessisonett Yeah, right before you "die" and wake up in the diner. First five minutes or so of the game. It's an incredible build-up atmospherically. You're walking through that alley with lots of little things signposting that SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG. Then the siren starts blaring, the environment gradually darkens, industrial clangs become louder in the soundtrack, to almost deafening extent, and then, yeah, it becomes like Hell.
Silent Hill 1 is very raw in terms of its scare factor, which I've always appreciated about it.
@Ralizah It’s the twisty turny camera angle that makes it so good for me, it’s super disconcerting in a way that can only be done with tank controls and a fixed camera. As much as I like to be able to move in games normally, they made the most of the tank controls that I don’t think has been matched within modern horror games outside of maybe The Evil Within? And that game’s a very fun car crash.
@Moj500
That's the standard price from any reputable online retailer in the USA. I really don't like the way the black Steelbook with red squares looks, so I don't mind not getting it.
Is £48 plus a free steelbook ( whether it looks nice or not) better or the £70 better edition better
