As the lifespan of certain games is increasingly measured in decades, an interesting play we keep seeing from developers is to revert to an earlier, presumably better state. World of Warcraft Classic found phenomenal success in this, as did Fortnite OG and Apex Legends' Season 23. It should come as no surprise, then, to learn developer Blizzard has hit the nostalgia button for Overwatch 2 ; Overwatch: Classic arrives today, 12th November, with the free event running until 2nd December on PS5.
Blizzard explained in a blog post (thanks, VGC) that Overwatch: Classic will "feature heroes and balance from popular moments in the game’s history, ranging from the fast-paced and frantic gameplay of the 2017 Moth Meta to the triple-tank, triple-support style of ‘Goats’". It reverts the game to its original 6v6, 1.0 state from May 2016, "which includes many abilities that haven't been seen for years and all the chaotic gameplay from that era".
