Capcom has shared a sales update for its slate of 2024 releases via a new GameBiz.jp article, where it's announced the publisher's PS5, PS4 strategy game Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess didn't meet the sales targets set by the firm. Its reasoning for the sales flop stems from a lack of awareness surrounding the game, so "it plans to continue promotion in the future" (via Google translate) to improve sales.
In terms of the company's other releases in 2024, it's said Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, and the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics are all "selling as planned". Two of them are also receiving physical versions this month, which Capcom expects will "continue to strengthen sales". It doesn't appear to have provided an update on the sales of Dragon's Dogma 2, which last we heard had surpassed three million purchases.
The PS5 sequel will go down as Capcom's biggest release of 2024, meaning it has been a slightly quieter year for the publisher compared to recent history. However, it plans to start 2025 with a bang in the form of Monster Hunter Wilds.
In our Kunitsu-Gami PS5 review, we awarded a 7/10 rating and praised its fun blend of action and strategy, and also its soundtrack and monster design. "It might not feel quite as new as its billing, but Kunitsu-Gami is still a lovely little game, with a seriously engrossing hook that'll have you wishing it was longer than it actually is," we concluded. "The plates it keeps spinning are impressive, even if it's actually a little slight in the final weighing."

Physical edition please
So a multi platform release, that secured the Gamepass-bag day-and-date didn’t do as well commercially as was initially expected. Well that has to be Sony’s fault right… right guys?
I really love the look of the game but unfortunately I'm just not into strategy games. If it was an adventure game like Okami or something like Onimusha I would've bought it day one but again I'm just not into the genre they chose ☹️
Played the demo yesterday and really liked it! Was planning won buying it, when I realized there is no physical version (not even in Japan) and the digital version is still 50€. I really would like to buy it but you either have to give me a physical version or I just have to wait for a discount. But that might be just me, I assume a lot of people never heard of this game to begin with.
No physical and it's on Gamepass....
What did they expect.
I liked it well enough, but it’s realistically a 7/10 tier Gamepass title. To its credit, it’s probably the third best GP title so far this year.
And truthfully, I liked it better than the Wilds beta. I like when Japanese publishers take risks and make out there games such as this.
I am curious what kind of sales they expected from this one though. It’s a unique game, and incredibly niche. Surely they didn’t expect this one to push millions of units.
It’s a good little game, but it was day 1 GP, there is no incentive to buy it elsewhere.
I guess it's another reminder that, while people argue they want smaller/cheaper/original games, they don't actually buy them in vast quantities.
I'm not sure why so many people are trying to label this a flop because of GamePass. Xbox only has about 25% of the market, it clearly sold badly everywhere.
@get2sammyb Can't argue with facts.
@Rob3008 in other slightly more surprising news Capcom also revealed for FY 24 that Playstation (3 mil), Nintendo (1.2 mil) and Xbox (206k) all sell more software than the PC (44k).
@get2sammyb I mean we knew this. Japan Studios went because people didn't want those games until they were dirt cheap. People mostly want old IP despite how much they scream about wanting new ideas.
@LowDefAl I wonder how many copies it sold total. It can always turn around. I mean, Capcom is one of the few that know this, given how Okami has sold over the years after being an initial flop.
I love Kunitsu Gami and it's probably Capcom most unique IP since Okami. I'm sad it doesn't sold well, which probably this will push Capcom to slow down when comes to creating new IP and stick with old and popular IP like RE, MH, SF, etc.
@get2sammyb Yep pretty much.
It's the reality that a lot of gamers only talk the talk when comes to supporting new IP with smaller scale. They always complaint they tired of the same franchise and wants devs to take risk with new IP. But every year we see US, UK, and Japan sales chart always dominated by the same old IP like COD, Madden, Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, GTA, or MLB while most new IP either flop or barely break even.
So much for boasting about 500,000 players early after launch. It's almost as if player count doesn't mean ***** in a paid game that isn't live service.
People knew about the game. It was at several events seen by millions but people just chose to ignore it. And it wasn't a title that went viral so people stayed in their comfort zone. So you know what that means, more complaining about sequels and remasters.
Im waiting for a sale. Why pay full price if they give it away for peanuts on xbox.
Also how could this fail, its multiplatform so surely xbox and pc would make this ijcredibly successful
I downloaded the demo, it was visually and musically stunning, with great atmosphere. But the gameplay was unfortunately a bit dull, and I found myself dragging myself through the demo a bit.
I might check it out on sale sometime, but it didn’t quite hit the mark for me
This was one where the demo put me off more than it helped
Bad marketing. Sega level really. But they will do anything except remake Dino Crisis which would print money.
@somnambulance Steam Estimates have it at about 30k copies after 4 months. You don’t really turn that around unless it was exceptionally popular on Playstation(player numbers don’t indicate it was even remotely successful there either)
I am a massive fan of Capcom, easily my must favourite developer, but I didn’t really hit it off with this game at all. Although a brilliant looking game, I couldn’t help feel that I would have far preferred an Okami Sequel as opposed to the strategy title that we got here as the look of the game really reminded me of the title from Clover Studios. I definitely would have loved to have seen a physical edition aswell, even a collectors edition of some sort, Japan usually releases pretty cool editions of games on the Capcom eStore, but alas..
I’m glad they’re still trying original things, hope this doesn’t deter them too much.
I feel awful about it but I just don't have the funds. There's too much out, all the time. Even when nothing new is coming, I still have dozens of things to catch up with and surprises that come out of nowhere. It's a good problem, but I really want this game.
@RagnarLothbrok luckily it's $50.
i really enjoyed this highly recommend!
The only reason I didn't buy this is because it's digital only. Put it on a disc and I'm in!
@ChrisDeku Yeah, that’s really low. It is a really niche game though, so I’m not particularly surprised. It deserves an audience though.
I really loved this game and think it's my GOTY this year. It's so fun and inventive, but they had no clue how to market it at all. Like for example @keyblade-dan thinks it's a strategy game when it really is more of an action game with Okami elements. It's not Starcraft or Fire Emblem.
Everyone should play this game. It is genuinely so good and addictive, and offers so many new things from beginning to end. It's a game that really keeps you wanting more at all times, along with being stunningly beautiful in its art direction.
@-Sigma- I've never met a single person irl who has heard of this game, even among hardcore, niche gamers lol. The only reason i know about it is because of its 1 minute blip of coverage at E3.
@LikelySatan yeah but they themselves valued it at $15
Oh well, it was nice they tired something new but it's back to the sequel welll...good thing their sequels are bloody fantastic then.
I played the demo. The art direction is simply beautiful, but that's the only positive thing for me unfortunately. I enjoy strategy games in general, so I was hoping to like it. But I wasn't feeling this one in particular. I highly doubt having a physical edition would have helped improve sales that much, if only by a margin.
Sega's marketing didn't help on that front either. Regardless, I hope this doesn't stop Capcom from attempting fresh ideas though. It's clear this game has an adoring fanbase.
I was excited before this came out due to its art direction and monster design. The demo didn't do it for me though, too much strategy for those who were hoping for an action game and not enough strategy for those who enjoy that genre unfortunately.
Give me an onimusha with that art style and I'm there day 1 though!
@Rob3008 And way less than half the people playing on Xbox are subscribed to Game Pass. Counting PC it's probably less than 5% of the game's potential market. I feel like if anything GP probably helped with word of mouth.
That’s too bad Kunistu didn’t do well. But I am glad Capcom’s other games met expectations. I want a new Ace Attorney game badly.
Put on a disc and I’ll buy
such a cool game, great systems, really polished and the art direction was top tier. i loved it, its shame it didnt do well. people complain up and down all day about games not being original anymore and then when a major studio releases something actually unique nobody buys it depressing
Strategy game? I thought it was a Monster Hunter style of game?
@get2sammyb Just because something is smaller and cheaper to make, doesn’t mean it’s going to to appeal to a lot more people. A niche title is still going to be niche no matter how much money you through at it. Take a look at steam to see how many smaller, less costly titles are doing well. Many of them doing better than AAA titles.
I am strictly physical media only I am afraid. Brad Shoemaker was raving about this game on the Nextlander podcast back when it released so I do really want to play it.
Unfortunately, if you are going to give the game away on Gamepass then that completely devalues the game and in my case at least, makes me think 'on your bike' when they want to charge me 50 quid whilst giving it away elsewhere.
@GilgaMax309 "Regardless, I hope this doesn't stop Capcom from attempting fresh ideas though"
I don't want to crush you or anyone hope but i don't think we will see a new fresh IP from Capcom at least for another 5-10 years.
With Kunitsu Gami and Exoprimal are a flop and Pragmata has been delayed with no release date, there's very little reason for Capcom to make a new IP or experimental game if they don't bring them money.
If only Kunitsu Gami, Exoprimal, or both of them sold well, i can see Capcom put more money to pump out new IP.
So petty much Capcom will stick closely to their golden cows while throwing some remaster of their old IP's.
It just didn't look very appealing to be honest, neither did exoprimal. I miss the clover studio days... now those were great originals.
@get2sammyb Yeah, and apparently videogame sites don't rate those games very highly, which could contribute to lower sales.
But really man, this is such a weird takeaway on multiple levels. The indie game scene has proven contrary time and time again, which makes your statement immediately obsolete.
People tend to bring up this argument repeatedly regarding Immortals of Aveum for instance, completely ignoring that that game looks generic and unappealing as hell.
In the case of Kunitsu-Gami, blame it on marketing, like Capcom is doing in an act of applaudable self-awareness. I had been interested in the game, but couldn't tell what you actually do in it until I played the demo and read some reviews. And even then...
People often overestimate the amount of well informed gaming enthusiasts vs. the mass market. The former can't carry the whole success of a game.
Also, the keyword here is "sales expectations", because we all know publishers tend to expect too much. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth didn't meet it's expected sales, either. So, apparently it can also happen to super big, triple-A, open-world-game,s who also happen to be remakes of the most beloved games of all time.
To blame that on the gaming community seems just a little out of touch.
There was like no advertisement for this and way to many sponsored reviews for small creators which probably wasn't a good financial idea
@IslandLogic if they were doing well Indie devs wouldn't be crying about discoverability and inability to secure funds. For every Balatro there are hundreds of games that people have never heard off. gameindustry.biz had a great piece on it.
So baffling no physical release almost no advertisement I totally forgot about the title.

A game for a more hardcore obscure group of gamers. How is it possible that this failed.
@Frmknst The fastest way to completely destroy the value of your games.
Onimusha remake next please. I didn't buy or play this but I will for that.
Buy Kunitsu-Gami. It’s great. And it constantly re-invents itself with new or twisted mechanics on every new stage. Thoroughly enjoying this one.
