One of the more fascinating features of the PS5 Pro, mentioned in early marketing materials and leaked more meaningfully over the weekend, is how it aims to improve unpatched PS4 games.
These titles, never updated for the PS4 Pro, stand to benefit from a toggle in the new system’s menu named ‘Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games’. While its testing is still early, Digital Foundry explains how this works.
“In essence, the 1080p output of PS4 games goes through a post-process filter – possibly AI-based in nature – that resolves additional detail,” writes Richard Leadbetter. “I would imagine that the idea is to take legacy 1080p gaming content and to make it look better on today's 4K screens.”
While it doesn’t present a seismic shift for releases like Bloodborne, there are clear improvements in image quality. But it’s not without its drawbacks.
“Being a post-process filter means this is nowhere near as advanced as Nvidia DLSS or indeed Sony’s own PSSR,” Leadbetter continues. “The filter has no integration into the game engine at all, meaning that a 2D image goes into the algorithm, a best guess is made on how it should look on a 4K screen, and that is what’s sent to your display.”
The report concludes this is something that’s “nice to have” but it’s hardly a game changer, and there are some instances where you may want to turn it off as things like chromatic aberration can resolve poorly using the solution.
Ultimately, it’s better than nothing, but we’re going to have to sit tight for the oft-requested Bloodborne remake for a significantly prettier version of the FromSoftware favourite.

The more of these articles I read the more I'm glad I haven't bought one.
No disrespect intended to anyone who wants one or has bought one, I'm sure it's a fantastic bit of kit in it's own right but for me personally it would have been a completely unnecessary purchase
Having spent a lot of this generation playing the PS4 backlog this is great.
About time Sony, the Series X (even the S to an extent) has been able to enhance previous gen titles on the fly for years.
And they didn't ask for £700 to do it.
The PS5 Pro surely does it better though right?
I'm sure there will be patches and firmware updates to continually improve PSSR and game boost in general.
C'mon Pushsquare... PS5 Pro articles start to be tedious!
Sony told us that the ps4 pro and then ps5 would be a solution. This gaming generation is disappointing
So we'll be playing PS4 games? Peak generation.
Do you know what else is nice to have? £700.
Nice to have for sure but I don’t have enough time for new games let alone revisiting last gen ones!
I want to see what the Pro can do for PS1 games!
@djlard your telling me. I know the pro is a huge thing right now and rightly so should be reported on but im looking forward to it just being out so we can get back to reading about games and not 10 articles a day about how the pro is the bees knees.
@djlard @Kidfunkadelic83 they don't make the news, they just report it!
Really worth the extra money to some folks?
The PS5 pro is really cool tech. Not 700 dollars cool, but still really cool.
I actually find what I'm about to say somewhat nit-picky, but while I do think this feature sounds great and I look forward to trying it out on my PS4 games, I just don't understand why Sony left the description of it in the console's settings so completely vague to where we all have to find articles or Reddit threads online to figure out what the hell the setting actually does.
Those images look identical on my phone 😬
I would love to see how pillars of eternity 2 plays. It was sadly unplayable on the standard PS4 with up to 1 min loading times every single time you went into a new building or new area
@wildcat_kickz
Right!??! If they don't want to read the article don't click on it. It's not like anyone is forcing anyone to read what they don't want to read.
Push Square is a PlayStation news site. It would be weird if they DIDN'T report every little detail of a new system.
@MaelysLeFleau
I have a feeling it would be because if they did spell it out as a new and improved feature fans would get mad if the upscaling didn't work on every game in the PS4 catalogue. So to avoid the same fallout as the 8K or 120FPS claims on the launch edition box they just quietly rolled it out
@Kidfunkadelic83 @djlard how dare you rattle the cage?
@Playstationdemodisc
That's what your dad said! lol..
@wildcat_kickz yeah, and i cant wait for them to stop reporting 10 articles a day on the pro! Im not saying dont report on it im just saying i cant wait for things to settle down. Its not a dig at the pro.
@Northern_munkey my day doesnt feel complete without a little cage rattling 🤣
@djlard @kidfunkadelic83 C’mon guys… It’s PlayStation site, and there is a new console coming out, so… maybe take a break from the site for a bit?
@Kidfunkadelic83 My words, friend, my words...
DF review of the Pro.

@ear_wig they are not knocking the ps5 Pro.. they were saying pushsquare goes a little bit overboard sometimes and not with enthusiasm either..
@Northern_munkey You misunderstood my feedback
@ear_wig did I? Maybe there was a subtle nuance that escaped me?
@GeeForce The 2TB Series X is $600 with zero improvements to modern games. Try again.
