You won’t need to wait for an annual dose of Fortnite nostalgia, as Epic Games is bringing back Fortnite OG as a permanent mode from 6th December.
Rumoured earlier in the month but officially confirmed today, the mode will take the popular Battle Royale back to its very origins, with a Season 1 that reverts the release back to its launch state, with its original map, loot, and gameplay.
As Fortnite seeks to attract new players and retain old ones, the title is adding more and more options for fans. The recently released Reload offers a smaller-scale competitive experience, as its main Battle Royale map becomes increasingly gimmicky. We suspect Fortnite OG is designed to appeal to purists, who prefer the release in its more basic form.
The timing of the announcement is interesting, as it comes lass than 24 hours after Blizzard announced Overwatch: Classic. The original Fortnite OG was a monumental success for Epic Games, driving player engagement higher than ever last year. It’s no surprise to see it coming back.
It’s perhaps worth remembering that the content of Fortnite OG is seven years old at this point; kids who were 11-years-old at the time of its release are now going to university. The nostalgia is real.
Other games would perhaps be worried about splintering their community like this, but Fortnite almost always has tens if not hundreds of thousands of players enjoying all its modes at any given time. There are more than enough players to support this.

Damn was kinda hoping it was the save the world mode because that's the only actually appealing part to me
"As Fortnite seeks to attract new players and retain old ones, the title is adding more and more options for fans"
Doesn't attract me as a new player. Didn't like it in the first place, having an OG mode, it didn't appeal first time around.
It's kinda wild to think about Fortnite being around for 7 years already, it still feels like a relatively new release
Anyone know if he gaming award nominations will be announced this week?
The problem this could cause it could spread the playerbase a bit to thin in some modes. I tried fortnite a few years ago and the OG season last year was not for me it was completely different from how the latest BR maps played. I have completely skipped this second OG season. Since they have introduced all these new modes the quality of the updates has slipped massively.
Saw this in my Google feed and I thought the entire game was going back to OG, which seemed weird after Disney invested $1.5 Billion. Glad it's just a mode I can ignore.
If this is replacing RELOAD, as it should b/c I see no reason to have both, there are plenty of players to go around.
@bindiana Spreading the playerbase thin is probably a concern in most games but Fortnite typically gets between 1 - 4+ million players at any one time. I don't think they will have any problems filling maps.
The talk about "7 years" and nostalgia I think highlights one big problem with a big segment of the games industry and how it collides with fans. Too much of the game industry still revolves around the kid-cycle like the toy industry, so that "7 years" is this really long time that "oh man d00d, I remember this from when I was a kid!" (says a 12 year old.) While for everyone else 7 years is still "new."
If they don't have problems filling matches, then why are bots placed in matches? Seems like pretty reliably I'll come across a pair of bots just circling each other, apparently unable to actually lands shots on one another. Maybe I'm just a scrub and if I were to "git gud" then my matches would be full of real players...? I wouldn't mind if matchmaking had to take a few more seconds to make a match full of real people. Genuine question that has confused me about the game.
@NEStalgia nah, the 7 years applies to live service games because of how much they change within 7 years. i get what youre saying but it really is a difference.
@nomither6 Just look back at the live services from 7 years ago, most don’t exist anymore, the ones that do had to come up with a “sequel” while having the same game due to player dropout, and I think Fortnite is the only one who managed to stay relevant all these years, I still play it from time to time and I always have fun.
@IOI fortnite also has that advantage of being a battle royale and a big advertisement for virtually all characters in fiction and even real life people too
To me this gives off WOW Classic/Runescape Old School player consideration vibes. No care for Fortnite in the slightest but does get you thinking.
I mean the problem though with Fortnite is how do you keep OG map players interested without it being altered too much?
I get the nostaglia of it but at the same time the MMO equivalents mentioned have expanded on them a fair bit while I guess not offering the stuff regular WOW or Runescape 3 offer as to me I played Runescape prior to 3 in the latter Old School era when they were ramping up to 3 and went oh ok Dungeoneering and a few other things that are now 3 onwards content that Old School's restart doesn't offer.
So it went with a way further back prior build of Old School they restarted with and it's very much from that older era before the other major changes to it and furthered content.
I think Old School is still good how it's tried to offer different content, quality of life and still keep relevant for old fans with a sizeable userbase besides 3's focus, but it is way further back then I would have expected besides yes a lot of other direction content focused on it.
So if Epic can support both Fortnite's or just leave the nostalgia one there I guess.... then sure but what if people get bored, and move on from their nostalgia or expect people to go back and forth for nostalgia all the time it's a bit ridiculous, that's kind of the problem.
Do they expect people to still go to the regular that's more updated or do they just offer quality of life/cosmetic compatibility? Or whatever else they have planned?
I do think they may stretch themselves thin.
To be honest if they wanted and people had nostalgia for 'which season they started with' you'd offer all versions of the map per season as separate instances.
A lot of work sure but like other games offering modes/maps people can still play but then it wouldn't be ever evolving like they'd want would it even though everyone started at different points or kept going or dropped off for different reasons at different maps/seasons, hmmmmmm tough that one.
