Insomniac Games says it’s “heartbroken” by the passing of Tony Todd, the veteran actor who voiced Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and the star of hundreds of movies, including most famously Candyman.
Deadline reports that Todd passed away aged 69 on 6th November at his home in Los Angeles.
The statuesque Todd, who stood 6’5”, starred in Oliver Stone’s Oscar-winning Platoon, and went on to feature in a number of popular television shows and movies. He landed his most iconic role in 1992, when he starred as the eponymous Candyman in the legendary supernatural horror film. He reprised the role 30 years later for its 2021 sequel.
The actor’s distinctive voice also brought life to a number of video game characters, including in the aforementioned Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, where he played Venom. “He brought so much joy to our studio and to many fans around the world with his inimitable voice and presence,” wrote developer Insomniac Games. “We are Venom forever.”
His next video game role will be as Locus in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, due out on the PS5 next year.
Our thoughts go out to Todd’s friends and family.

This really sucks. He had such a great presence in both voice and in person.
Legendary voice. RIP.
This is terrible news to have seen almost straight after I'd woken up. Such a great actor and voice. The Candyman films are some of my favourite cheesy horror flicks. And I also remember him from the casino scene in Wishmaster. Such a sad loss
Just not fair.
He did great voicing Venom! I first saw Tony Todd as Bludworth in the Final Destination movies. I really liked how he had such a mysterious, yet cool presence to him. I really should finally watch Candyman.
Tony todd is a legend.candyman is one of my favorite horror movies ever.life is precious.enjoy it everyday.word up son
I remember first seeing Tony Todd in an episode of The X-Files, years ago, as the guest 'monster of the week'. He had such an amazing screen presence, he could stand there seemingly doing nothing and your eyes would be drawn to him.
Couldn't believe it when I saw this morning so sad. R.I.P Candyman we lost a horror legend 😭😭
I cannot recommend Candyman enough, such a great early 90's horror film.
@AdamNovice The new one is really good too.
R.I.P Tony Todd-proper legend
He also voiced the Vortigaunts in Half-Life 2 Episode 2 and Half-Life Alyx, which I didn't know until he passed away.
@Enuo Haven't seen it, will have to check it out
If anyone wants two fantastic films to watch of his you should try Enemy Territory and Night of the Living Dead 90.
Fantastic actor with a fantastic voice. RIP.❤️
Such a shame..there are not enough superlatives to describe this man. Truly a huge loss.
Were all getting older man I'm nearly 53 the reapers circling
Guy was an unsung hero character actor. Of all things, I really enjoyed the way he played a Vietnam vet in an old X-Files episode. Really fantastic stuff! Rest well, Mr Todd
Such a sad day, first Lance Reddick and now Tony Todd. Both great character/voice actors in their own right. Their voices bringing characters in both movies and games to life with that certain je ne sais quoi!
I actually remember Tony Todd from Star Trek TNG which is going back sometime (showing my age here lol) but he was great being cast as Worf's brother - for those familiar with the series.
Their voices truly elevate their acting, whether on or off screen, and for me what set them apart.
He and Lance will both be dearly missed.
Tony Todd did such a good job as Venom that I think he's easily my favorite portrayal as Venom overall. Rest in peace legend. I was not expecting this news all of a sudden
Ugh another one of my favourites goes forward into the great beyond , it's shi*t getting old , im getting on a bit myself now a mature gamer you could say , my first console was a binatone, then a spectrum, ive got to the age now where I think if I want something I get it , if I want to go somewhere I go , life's really is to short to be worrying about tommorrow, to my fellow younger gamers , don't worry about petty things , don't argue over nonsense , we are only here for a short time , live your lives , love your family , tell your parents you love them, one day it'll be to late , embrace what you have , stop worrying about what the guy down the road has , happy gaming brothers and sisters,it's the best thing in the world.
@Batesy125s I love wishmaster ,Andrew divoff was superb, some great horror legends in that film, todd, englund and not forgetting kane hodder ,also I believe Angus scrimm was the narrator from phantasm.
@CAKESPECTRE999 just turned 55 and I'm knackered ha ha its depressing brother, gaming keeps me going though , greatest hobby in the world , hoping I get to the ps7 at least ha ha
@Fishnpeas excellent suggestions there my friend
Candyman legitimately scared me as a kid. It was the scene where Helen wakes up covered in blood more than anything else. The idea of just waking up in a situation like that without knowing how you got there is terrifying. I loved the new one as well, and there are several shots that stuck with me. RIP.
damn that sucks , i thought he was gonna live a long time , he seemed like it.
Candyman to many, but for me he'll always be Commander Kurn. Qapla.
@CAKESPECTRE999 I turned 53 this year too. Didn't really mind until it was pointed out that my (and probably your) date of birth is closer to World War One than it is to the present day. Sucks, man.
@Lazarus11 yes mate knackered most definitely waiting on a knee replacement other knees on way out , yeah hope I get to see the ps7 & few other things still in development like Elder scrolls
@Rgeneb1 it does suck mate when you realise that a good chunk of your life is gone & your body's knackered well mine is keep on gaming though mate
@lazarus11 yeah it's such a great film. Loved how they got all of those horror legends in just one movie. That's a franchise I wouldn't mind seeing return. Though as you said Andrew Divoff did such a great job that it would be hard to get anyone to replace him
He was such a great talent and will be missed. 😥
69 is still quite young. Warmest wishes to his family.
