Industry icon Masahiro Sakurai – the eternally young creator of the Super Smash Bros franchise and founder of Sora Ltd – plunged deep into his wallet today to purchase a PS5 Pro console. “I bought it,” he wrote on social media, next to an image of the supercharged system’s box.

While the new system has sparked global debate for its £700/$700 price point, it’s particularly expensive in Sony’s native Japan, where it retails for an eye-watering ¥119,980 (~$780). That tag comes with additional sticker shock when you consider the current economic climate in Japan on top.

Nevertheless, the Super Smash Bros series has sold almost 75 million copies worldwide, so we’re confident Sakurai’s bank balance will cope.

Which game do you think he’ll be playing first? He was notoriously hot on Astro Bot earlier in the year, but seeing as the Team ASOBI title has not yet been enhanced for Sony’s new system, our money’s on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – both Cloud and Sephiroth are in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, after all.
