Bloober Team has today released a new update for Silent Hill 2 that intends to fix the issues the title is facing when it is played on PS5 Pro. It's available to download now and weighs in at 517.1 MB, but it appears that anyone playing on the new upgraded console shouldn't get their hopes up too much for the update to completely solve everything. The testing done by users after installing the update reveals there are still graphical issues with the build.
For example, Twitter user @yrlak responded to the tweet announcing the update with a video of constant flickering and image blotches in an interior environment. Then, on Reddit, it's described how the opening area just outside of Silent Hill still features flickering in puddles and an "annoying shimmer" in reflective surfaces. "The base PS5 still produces a more stable image," claimed user erimiz687.
It's agreed this is a better version of Silent Hill 2 for PS5 Pro users with patch 1.06 applied, but the frame rate still appears temperamental and graphical glitches remain an issue. It looks like another PS5 Pro-specific update will be required to get the survival horror game in an optimal state. You can find the rest of the patch notes below.

Not a good look for the dev team, or their QA process.
If they had said "Some glitches may remain, but we aim to have a further patch out next week to resolve these" it would be different.
Given so many similar experiences with other games and devs, was anyone expecting that every one of those bugs would be solved in 1 single patch?
To quote a bit of Kratos: "Keep your expectations low BOY, and you'll never be disappointed"
Come on Bloober. You made a great game, but the experience shouldn't be worse on PS5 Pro.
Maybe this will be fixed by the time I get my disc drive (sorry I won't mention that again I promise).But yeah this is a bad look on Bloober.
I bought this today. I will hold out a little longer to play it.
Does PS5 have the weird lighting issue where the game almost looks like a flash of lightning just randomly happens?
If not, the PC version does, and I hope that's covered under the last bullet-point in these patch notes. It doesn't happen a lot, but it is a blemish in an otherwise great experience (barring periodic traversal stutter).
I knew these kind of issues would happen as these developers are being pulled away from their current game developments and into developing patches for games they have already moved away from.
@get2sammyb Yes, this. How can it be worse? It defies logic.
Damn is it possible to turn pssr off at all until its working properly? I’m assuming that’s the issue considering it’s happening in other games
IIRC, the Pro enhancements were developed with a beta version of PSSR which clashed with built-in FSR pretty seriously.
@Mikey856 Sony's own PSSR is definitely the issue.
@Mikey856
Unfortunately, the only games ive seen this option in personally are some of the very best patches / games, where turning PSSR off negatively impacts the visuals (but the devs do include the option).
@J-Dubs it is because PSSR is AI upscaling which is a new tool for most devs to utilize so it isn’t working right. It isn’t just this game the AI is messing up with. Even on games that overall do look better on the pro, the upscaling causes the game to freak out. I was playing Horizon Zero Dawn and noticed that if the footprints left by Aloy are close together the area on the ground turns to static. I have never seen a game do that ever in my life. While I am glad I got a pro for frame rate performance I do think the PSSR AI was shipped out way too soon
But is it shinier?
£700 to £800 just to have a worse version of the game.
My OG PS5 feels great right now. Works like a charm, has a disc drive, it's still silent and bought before the price hike. Also the welcome hub made things a bit fresh too.
@PloverNutter Huh thats interesting
@ButterySmooth30FPS
Yeah, ive heard/read this and about old versions of PSSR being used - no idea if its true.
Maybe its just down to certain devs, maybe its just teething troubles with PSSR which Sony will be revising based on feedback, but the haters (usually just because of price) will still tell you its broken, and the worst thing ever despite the enormous number of games Pro succeeds in significantly improving!
I still say if devs properly QA tested and found an issue, they could have done something - ie put a toggle in for PSSR if there was any problem noted (and reported it to Sony) - the games should still have notable improvements added by devs (even if just pre upscaler res and fps fixes) using the extra GPU power alone, even if PSSR is off.
Waiting for this to be fixed before purchasing as my plate is pretty full
@Major_Player if PSSR was the main issue we'd see all games suffering, but I've had multiple great games with PSSR looking cleaner than FSR/TAA. Consistency in dev implementation is the issue.
@DonJorginho this is what’s confusing me. GT7/ horizon/Spider-Man all look brilliant. Seems to be third party games 🤷♂️
@Rich33 GT7 has the option in game to turn off pssr. Is there a system level toggle thing?
I've been looking to play this - never played Silent Hill 2 before - but I'm definitely waiting until this is properly sorted out.
@Rich33 they said they fixed SOME issues on ps5pro...
People say performance mode looks good, while quality mode doesnt.
@Mikey856
Theres not - just a system toggle for the PS4 game visual improvement (thats in your 'screen and video' settings menu).
GOWR, and at least 1 other game which I cant remember now include an option in game - maybe D Souls or Stellar blade (or both) - games which are much better off using PSSR.
@Rich33 Stellar Blade and Demon Souls look and run better using PSSR.
GOWR looks the same but runs 10 frames better at 120fps mode with TAA rendering instead of PSSR.
@DonJorginho
Yeah, forgot the 10fps drop using PSSR on GOWR - though we are talking about a very high framerate (well in excess of 60fps) on Pro, even with PSSR.
The image quality / detail using PSSR, particularly at a distance out, looked better to me when I tried the game 2 weeks ago (as the option was there i did flip it to have a look) - I recall JL from DF saying something similar in a video about a week back (it may have been on their DF clips channel).
It wasnt as dramatic as some games, particularly as both with and without PSSR the mode had other improvements, but I could still see a difference. I think this was one of the games i noticed it more when moving.
Not sure whether I would prefer the PSSR or the extra 10fps in this case as it looks and performs so well now (not that it was ever bad at all) - i only really tested it out for a little bit along with a load of other games - "kid in sweetshop" sort of thing.
Thank God i dodged this €920 (the price + disc drive in Europe) bullet lmao.
Many studios won't bother to do enhancements or they will release crappy updates. Enhancements are not mandatory even for new games...
@DonJorginho "Consistency in dev implementation is the issue."
It's not that simple. Dev implementation is only one of many variables that could explain the issue:
1) SDK version has been reported to make a difference. First-party studios might have early access to newer versions.
2) Input resolution has also been pointed out. Sony's games seem to be implementing 1440p > 4K, while others are rendering natively at much lower resolutions and are getting worse results with PSSR then they were getting with FSR2.
3) And lastly, PSSR seems to be causing graphical glitches when combined with certain raytracing effects such as ambient occlusion.
Now, these patches shouldn't have been released in the first place, but I'd bet there are contractual obligations at play here. And most of what I described above is actually on Sony's side.
Finally, I don't think there is much to worry about at the end of the day. DLSS was pretty bad when it first launched, which is par for the course when it comes to AI upscalers. Machine learning is resource intensive and time consuming. PSSR will get better with time.
@Rich33 yeah so going off all the evidence then maybe its a dev by dev basis as a lot of third party games also look great. Yes I’ve switched the PS4 enhance on but yet to actually play one on it 😁
@Major_Player have you got a source saying it's definitely the issue
Pop us a link over if you do I am curious.
I think it could be partially to do with it but also the hardware being rushed to market so Devs maybe haven't had as much time to work with it as they would like
There are cases where it has worked and worked well (FFVII Rebirth is one example) and some of Sony's own titles.
I don't think PSSR is solely the issue as much as it is the short amount of time Devs have had to make it work. That's the problem imo. It was rushed out to sell to people in time for the holidays.
@Mikey856
I think its a few things.
PSSR could clealy be improved, though based on lots of very good examples we have, and going by what experts have said its in a good place. But DLSS wasnt built to be what it is today overnight, and from what I remember, was not ideal to begin with.
A key part of this is in Sony now being able to see real world 3rd party examples of issues, as well as 1st party.
I really do think PSSR will be a critical priority for Sony - if they dont get this spot-on, PS6 may well be a disaster. The earlier they improve it, the better experience devs get with it, and the more cycles of improvement they can get out.
Also, people forget (conveniently) issues with FSR like that awful ghost image when moving - that really does my head in lol. FSR has no hardware ML element, so its ceiling is much lower.
Devs experience will also improve with PSSR and Pro - all we are looking at here is early patched games, some of which but not others may have been rushed.
Sadly, you will always get a few poor results from odd dev teams (which may or may not be their fault) eg SWJS performance mode on base PS5 for the first 6 months - appalling sub 60fps, but RT is included!! (But could be turned off on PC).
Ive been quite critical about this small number of bad patches for Pro because they just should not have gone out in this state. Just the extra GPU power alone would have allowed improvements - if they cannot get PSSR to give a good result, leave it off for now or put a toggle on.
Guesswork here, but I can it going the other way too, and we will see some devs trying really, really hard on Pro, so they can tell everyone their impressive Pro technicals, under the "assumption" that everone who cares about framerates / visuals etc will have bought Pro. Some will only show Pro footage, not base - you see this a lot in PC (ie only showing probably RTX4090 footage).
Boy that’s really disappointing… Glad I went ahead and finished my first play through before I had the Pro. I feel kind of bad for Bloober, just when they were finally turning things around and riding high… Being more transparent about the challenges with fixing the issue might help. Anyways, I hope that they can work it out and people can go back to praising the game!
It seems like using PSSR, on games below 1080p (native res), is a really bad idea at the moment.
@Rich33 you summed it up perfectly. PSSR is in it's infancy it's going to have teething issues. As a third party dev unless it's going to drive up sales don't rush that shizz out - wait.
It'll be refined smooth out next year in time for the big hitters (GTA etc) which was probably the end goal anyway. Rockstar will have a whole year+ with it.
@Danloki I've been playing GT7 with Pro and havent noticed any shimmering. Playing on an LG C1 Oled for what its worth.
@get2sammyb they would have to move on to a new sdk since the game is running on sdk9 now I don't know how hard it would be to do that but according to techies that's what they need to do
@get2sammyb it's so frustrating when all they have to do is allow Pro users access the base PS5 graphics options, whilst they fix the true Pro mode. It's ironic that all the games with great upgrades allow you to choose the original options, even though you'd never want to but the few games which are poor on Pro don't allow this
@carlos82 I agree how you feel about just brute forcing it for some extra frames and little better looks. Or even better give have option.
Ps5 pro is mostly a bust for 3rd party games. For silent hill 2 it's better to uninstall all the updates if you have a disc version.
@RedRiot193 Don’t think we can say “mostly” a bust when only 2 games on pro have big issues; being AW2 and SH2.
@DonJorginho dragon age veilguard, DD2, and Star wars outlaws as well. No 3rd party game I've played looks good on pro and exhibit issues with pssr.
@RedRiot193 I’ve played Veilguard and encountered no issues, looks and runs great, DD2 is the best console port in terms of its performance, with RT on there’s some shimmering but it’s not distracting outside of the towns, SW Outlaws looks better than the base performance mode and balanced mode, just needs to sort out some of the traversal frame dips and some minor shimmering.
Dying Light 2 is another third party that looks and runs great on Pro, same with Black Ops 6, Callisto Protocol, Hogwarts Legacy and F1 24.
@DonJorginho Veiulguard 100% has the same issue alan wake 2 has. And I can't unsee it. DD2 flickering annoys me. SW outlaws looks worse. It's absolutely atrocious and even runs worse with random slow downs. Another garbage pro 3rd party game jedi survivor absolute joke. Hogwarts legacy best mode is trapped behind 30fps and not a "good" 30 either. I have no opinion on the other 4.
So is anything improved on the pro? Or is it worse all around?
So glad I didn't bother with this game. The studio is just not competent. I will buy and support a game at full price that deserves it... and this is not one and had NO CHANCE of being one.
Said it a million times. Bluepoint and the ONLY ONES should have been allowed to touch a national treasure of the gaming world, Silent Hill 2. This remake being made on the same engine as every single crappy Western made SH game, Unreal, already sealed its faith.
@get2sammyb You guys should give them a credit, it's Unreal Engine 5 we are talking about. Stop creating news to spread hate to the devs.
@andrewsqual Dude, how low IQ you are. Gezz
The game runs amazing on base PS5 and it's one of the best games of this gen and this year. It's sad how dumb some people are these days with so much information we have with internet.
@Shrek_Realista What the heck has the Internet to do with common sense? That's my opinion and nobody else's. I haven't read or looked at a single review on SH2 Remake
Ironic that you sound like a clown, molded by the hive mind internet.
The game has technical problems, even the title of Digital Foundry's report gives that away lol.
"Silent Hill 2's remake is authentic and compelling - but technical problems need addressing".
Bit of a low IQ yourself there it seems. I'll buy it eventually, when it's cheaper and you have beta tested it for me. Thanks for that by the way.
