At the start of the year, a Borderlands superfan named Caleb McAlpine attempted a "longshot", putting out what he described as a plea to Gearbox to allow him to play the still-in-development Borderlands 4. McAlpine suffers from stage-four cancer and may have less than two years to live, and the good folks over at Gearbox have granted his wish, flying him and a friend out first-class to Gearbox headquarters in Frisco, Texas.
In an update post on Reddit, McAlpine recounted the adventure (thanks, GameSpot). During the visit, the two met the development team, as well as studio founder and CEO Randy Pitchford, and got to play the next Borderlands game. He wrote a heartfelt message to the community and everyone at Gearbox who made this dream come true: "It was amazing. I don't know if I will be around when the game comes out, but I want to thank all of you for your love and support and for helping make this happen. It truly was an amazing experience, and it was just awesome."
Isn't it incredible when companies do this sort of thing? We wish McAlpine all the best and will look forward to the eventual release of Borderlands 4. Are you a fan of the series? Let us know in the comments section below.

I pray McAlpine will get a second miracle in addition to getting to play Borderlands 4 and be in remission from cancer. The folks at Gearbox deserve the highest praise for granting his wish.
A bright spot in gaming news. Truly wonderful stuff and best wishes to this man
What a beautiful piece of news! Thank you everyone at Gearbox. Gaming is much more than just entertainment. It is art. It touches lives in more ways than one.
things like these puts everything into perspective. All the negativity often surrounding the gaming industry is sometimes brightened by news such as this. If we all realised our time on this planet is limited (not to get too philosophical), we would all be kinder to one another.
(plus it would be cool if they could make an easter egg dedicated to him)
May he open loot boxes filled with cool weapons for years to come. 🤞
Absolutely love to see stuff like this. So heart warming. Respect to all involved.
Even if I won't like the game when it releases I will still have nothing but respect for developers.
Kinda puts all our first world problems in perspective.
Very heart warming and glad Gearbox made this happen.
That’s awesome hopefully he makes it till release
@Petrecis24 I bet you they will they’ll probably name a gun after him
Lovely story, good on you Gearbox and good luck Caleb!!
Well done Gearbox. Wonder if gabe will do the same for half life 3.
A very classy move of Gearbox to do. Good stuff. Glad to see this man's dream come true!
@dark_knightmare2 probably an npc actually, they have done it previously, twice I belive
This is awesome. In the current climate we live in news like this is a breath of fresh air. Respect to gearbox for this one 👏
They did this for Michael Mamaril he was also a massive fan of borderlands Claptrap he was 22 when he passed away. They put him in the game as a NPC who would randomly show up at the floating base and if you found him you got a trophy/achievement.
Hats off to Gearbox!
Love Borderlands, love this story.
Respect to gearbox for doing this. I’m now hoping that this guy gets to open a loot box one day, and for it to make him cancer free.
The "I don't know if I will be around when the game comes out" line got me. Best of luck Caleb, and well done everyone at Gearbox.
Evidently we can have nice things!
Blessings to him. Really hope he enjoys his day and has another miracle.
@AfroMario Gallows humour at its best.
i’ll believe it when i see it. people always say an upcoming game is “amazing”. yea right
Wish him all the best and glad he had an awesome experience! I hope to see more of this sort of thing, although I know it's not possible every time.
That is something nice to read I hope he will still be around to play it. Life is something really precious that's a fact.
