Dead Space is undoubtedly one of the best horror franchises in gaming, with an excellent remake of the original reminding us of that fact in 2023. In a highly telling reveal, however, original creators Christopher Stone, Bret Robbins, and Glen Schofield (recently of Striking Distance Studios/Callisto Protocol fame) pitched a fourth entry in the franchise in 2024, which EA summarily shot down.
In an interview with Dan Allen Gaming (thanks, IGN), Schofield revealed that the trio tried to pitch the project to publisher and IP holder EA, but it seems the idea of taking another crack at the sci-fi setting is just too risky right now: "We tried, actually, the three of us, Dead Space 4. We’re talking this year. We didn’t go too deep; they just said, ‘We're not interested right now. We appreciate it blah blah blah, and you know we know who to talk to.’ So we didn't take it any further. And we respected their opinion. They know their numbers and what they have to ship, so yeah."
Stone, who served as animation director at the now-defunct Visceral Games, added: "The industry is in a weird place right now; people are really hesitant to take chances on things. So you have to take it with a grain of salt. Who knows, maybe one day. We'd all love to do it."
Would you be up for a fourth Dead Space if it were to get off the ground? Is the memory of the abysmal Dead Space 3 still too fresh? Tack on some multiplayer in the comments section below.

Why do I having a sinking feeling that even most established franchises are about to go the way of the Dodo?
I would like to have seen a remake of Dead Space 3 before a 4th game, since that wasn’t took good back on PS3! However, I would have been happy to see the guys who created the first games give the series another bash in time. I actually think Glen Schofield did a really good job on The Callisto Protocol and I enjoyed it loads more than I thought I would! 😄
DS3 wasn't abysmal, IMO. It was a definite misfire, but I played it through.
I played DSR and I don't know whether I want more Dead Space. It's still a great game, but it's also a bit quaint and dated in a lot of ways and the writing is pretty ham fisted. Maybe a new DS improves a lot of that, but I doubt it.
They Would probably Shoot down a new Mirrors Edge Game if someone pitched it.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! F EA! F EA! F EA! F EA! F EA! F EA! F EA!
Didn't EA also shoot down a Dead Space 2 Remake?
I dont see how an established franchise is too risky when people are asking for more. Or is because you can't put an Ultimate Team in it?
@Danloaded or a digital gambling mechanic oops sorry I meant loot boxes/mtx's etc,etc,etc...
I loved dead space on the ps3 and I almost platinumed it. By the time the 2nd game came out I had switched to my PC and that's where I played 2 and 3. I never understood the need for a multiplayer mode as the games are primarily a single player driven experience. Not every game needs to have a multiplayer aspect.
EA have never made any money on any Dead space game they have all lost money so you cant really blame them in this instance
Can't fully blame EA for this.
They seen Callisto Protocol was a big flop and then DS1 remake doesn't sold that well (iirc only sold 2 million copies) despite the positive receptions.
I personally want more Dead Space but i feel the story doesn't have enough juice to keeps going on, especially after the 3rd game ending. So i'm okay if there's no more Dead Space...
@RudeAnimat0r If I told a stranger about Dead Space, explaining the dismemberment system, gore, stomping, and schlocky premise, I would hope that unsubtle writing was expected.
@PuppetMaster They could always make a game for a lower budget. Maybe the expectation of selling gangbusters with Dead Space is the problem. The only answer is to water it down for mass market appeal, or make a smaller game. They could throw back to the 7th gen, like how certain horror games are throwbacks to the PS1...that could be a smart way to cut down costs.
@PuppetMaster
Callisto only flopped because it cost an obscene amount of money to make. 161 million roughly. With marketing costs on top of that I think they estimated it had to have sold close to 5 million copies just to break-even which is insanity for a new IP.
With the way the gaming industry is going they are preparing for a market crash I think, that's why
1) a lot of Devs are holding off for GTA6 nothing big has been announced for a while well known AAA games that is.
2) The amount of money lost for a lot of big Devs/pubs over the last year that haven't returned an investment. Bungie for Sony $3 billion buy out, Concord $400 million, Just recent Sony bought stake in Kawawa with nothing big this year to recoup the costs and they are still pushing for Live Service.
Ubisoft are in serious trouble financially as well, Microsoft spent billions and now are finding new ways to recoup the costs because Shareholders clearly have forced them too in a way.
3) EA haven't even announced a new Battlefield game which says a lot usually by now they would have I'm sure.
4) He worked on Colisto Protocol that cost £200 million or near and it didn't do well enough said
Loved the Dead Space remake, so I’m hoping to see more of this universe
Oh well
That's funny to me honestly Ea is the publisherso they have the right to do that
Two words. .......big mistake!
I think it's a sign of the way the industry is heading. Publishers will see most IP as a massive risk and they will take fewer and fewer chances due to development costs and time.
Something needs to change.
I hope they try developing some of their ideas into a new franchise. Something more indie and cheaper to make than Dead Space/Callisto would be fine, great horror games don't necessarily need the best graphics.
Dead space 2 in my top 10 games of all time, it's truly a shame how badly DS3 butchered the franchise and they could never recover from that.
All i want is a remake of dead space 2 man. ea give us that at least
Dead space is not only one the best video games ever.but one of the best video games ever.yeah but dead space 4 would have been amazing.word up son
This will probably be an unpopular opinion here but I don’t think there needs to be a dead space 4. Dead space 3 may be very divisive but I personally loved how the game and series ended. Spoilers for DS3 here on out. The fact that the game and series ends with the human race being destroyed was a really bold move for a video game. People didn’t like it because despite games telling a story many gamers don’t like it when they don’t “win” the game, ie no happy ending. Why I like it is because this is a horror story first and foremost, and the games sets up the ending really well from the start. The necromorphs are the dominant life forms in the universe. They have wiped out countless other alien life forms before humans even existed. This is why despite humans traveling across the stars for hundreds of years not one other alien civilization was ever found. As a horror enthusiast this is a fantastic end to the series. Gamers just don’t like not winning
Ah manI think Dead Space 4 could be such a good game Is a kind of scheme that it looks like Ea will not make it any time soon.
@Northern_munkey the co-op in DS3 was originally supposed to be a real experiment for the time, from what they've shared about it since. a lot more of each player seeing things that the other doesn't, etc.. and it was supposed to be its own campaign.
sounded like a really good idea that got watered down to meet deadlines and to be more in line with the trends then.
@Northern_munkey i don’t think any game uses lootboxes anymore
also love the shade at multiplayer being thrown , classic pushsquare .
nobody complained about the tacked on story mode in SF6 but whatever
@nomither6 I'm pretty sure they do..as far as I'm concerned those packs in fifa qualify as loot boxes.
@nomither6 a quick Google search threw up god knows how many titles that still use loot boxes or similar game mechanics..have a look you'll be surprised.
Incoming dead space 2 remake it is then
Just reboot Dead Space it's too good just to give up on they can have a RE7 style game play are just keep it in third person
@Northern_munkey ok, i’ve looked it up . the games i saw besides COD & Apex were pretty old from 2020/2021 or some very niche games . i can’t believe that im actually saying this for the first time but im glad battle passes exist now , its the lesser of two evils
@nomither6 yes if they are done right. I'm still bitterly disappointed with diablo 4's battle pass as there really is no incentive to progress. You can't even earn enough platinum currency to unlock the next one. I hate the way that the term "predatory" is used so frequently but in this case its most definitely whole heartedly deserved.
Interesting, well Bioshock 4 and Judas to come then. If a new IP is worth it sure but otherwise what will fill that space of Dead Space then? Besides what Indies? Having a series as 3 is fine nothing wrong with that but PS3/360/Wii having other IPs and not Army of Two or others was kind of sad as I think they stuck out more. But a trilogy was good enough still.
IPs don't have to be continued but I'd almost want other IPs to get support then the ones that did. That or a new IP that's worthy not worthless and not what people want, or my weird tastes. XD
Otherwise interesting, I mean 4 wouldn't be as 3 was right? Of content/context and things EA wants.
They have IPs but what more can they do?
The remake did fine for sales didn't it? Or was it the details it had over the original some people didn't like in it?
I don't know I only hear things I don't take them seriously.
What else will EA focus on? Or other MTX/MP stuff or more of their sports stuff and less or a controlled few of their other IPs instead? That and probably if not bad ruining the WRC/F1 and more licenses. We don't have any Slightly Mad either so no next Project Cars/NFS Shift kind of project at all. Or were they support not shut down?
Codemasters are in WRC/F1 focus so whatever goes there as what Dirt Rally died wasn't it? But Grid lives still after Grid Legends?
Besides whatever of NFS Unbound money?
Will Battlefield series be the only one to have Scifi? Or something else? Mass Effect only then?
Split Fiction looks good but that's their other support program for devs so that's different.
Or not Dead Space horror scifi but more Apex scifi? Or whatever?
Even then didn't Apex cut mobile MTX but console ones are still there or was it all platforms? Is that game phased out?
Dead space is one of my all time favourite.
EA is not. Actually, EA executives are not. Simply because they prefer to put forward more useless cosmetics and collection events rather than investing in improving their products to make them more engaging or on established IPs that people have been requesting for years.
Still grateful that the Dead Space Remake made it to production. RIP Visceral Games
Oh yeah, wouldn't want to tarnish the perfect send-off ending of dead space 3.
@PegasusActual93 It's ironic that they spent $160+ million but the gameplay suffers with lacks of enemy variety, mediocre combat & level design, and almost copy paste of Dead Space story but somehow it's uninteresting.
@nomither6 There's no "story mode" in SF 6. Maybe what you mean is World Tour mode which is well designed. The WT mode primary function is to teach gameplay mechanics for newcomers. But for people who plays more, it also re-introduced SF world and story lore for the World Warriors either classic or new considering SF 6 timeline is 4-5 years after SF 3rd Strike.
So if EA won't take the risk, sell the IP? I've never understood why companies decide to let franchises die, give it to someone even at abit of a loss, maybe they could possibly re invent etc..
The irony to call DS4 "too risky" when they're out here, pumping the same garbage and live service nonsense every bloody year. If you don't want the IP EA. Sell it!
Hell yeah! I'd go for DS4 anytime anywhere...
This is too risky but still trusting "bioware" with making games isn't?
