If Infinity Nikki is your first live service gacha game, then welcome, the work never ends. While you may still be making your way through the initial eight chapters of the main storyline, the release’s first major update is close, and scheduled to release on 30th December. There’s a ton to get through here, so let’s not waste any time.
Named the Shooting Star Season, the content will run through 23rd January, and promises “new storylines, platforming challenges, time-limited events, and, of course, stunning outfits to ring in the new year”.
The blurb explains: “During the Shooting Star Season, shimmering meteors will grace the night skies over Miraland as residents come together and cast their wishes upon the stars. Beyond these cosmic travellers and festive decorations, players will find a series of new activities, rewards, and ways to interact with the cozy open-world.”
Of the aforementioned outfits, you’ll be able to unlock Path of Starlight for free by completing various in-game activities.
Meanwhile, the new 5-Star outfit, named Wings of Wishes, will add a new Paper Crane floating ability, which looks incredible in the trailer. This will be part of the gacha, alongside the 4-Star outfit Starfall Radiance. This has an added little detail in that when you strike a specific pose, shooting stars will appear in the background of your photographs
The four-week cadence of Infinity Nikki’s updates may be a little too fast for our tastes – most other gachas operate on a six-week sequence – but it looks like there’s tons to look forward to here. What are you most looking forward to: the new gameplay or the stunning new outfits?

Let's go!!! I'm in love with this game, but I am saving my diamonds in this banner
Hopefully there’s some updates to the settings and stuff too included in this. I still haven’t been able to play it much because of the camera controls.
Is this game suitable for a 7 year old girl? My daughter loves the dress up part of Disney Dreamlight Valley and this looks pretty cool.
@gollumb82 of what I’ve watched my partner play so far, I’d say yes it is.
Some of the language and how things are explained would probably be a little difficult for her, and there’s some confusing menus. So may need a little help.
But the actual gameplay I would say is fine.
@gollumb82 Yes, definitely. You may need to help her a little bit with some of the mechanics, but the tone and stuff is perfect for kids.
@LavenderShroud They definitely should fix some controls, the menus navigation in ps5 are a headache, and they bug all the time.
Aside from that the game works pretty well
@PsBoxSwitchOwner @get2sammyb
Thank you! We will give it a shot then. It was my assumption that I would need to help my daughter with the controls/menus etc and it’s no problem as I like to keep an eye on what kind of digital content she’s into.
@Nekomichu Agreed, my one major complaint is the menus and controls really. I’m sure they’ll be listening to feedback and iterate on it.
@gollumb82 100% yes, the gameplay is fun but fairly simple and the story has some serious bits but nothing darker in tone than the average Disney movie.
I would say, make sure the permissions on your account (or your daughter's) are locked so she can't make any purchases while playing, cos obviously these games want to take your money so they make the store very obvious and shiny.
@starnivore
I will and thanks! Yes, I figure I will probably just play the game with her. It’s actually a nice thing to bond over and I’ve already played enough girly stuff to be comfortable with it haha.
@Nekomichu I agree. I haven’t had the chance to play it as much as I’d like to for those very reasons.
Oh no the limited outfits look so good, and the extra touch for getting all the pieces. I might need to get a monthly pass lol
@Judal27 It’s good value if you expect to login every day for your dailies.
“ the content will run through 23rd January “
If the update is adding new chapters past 8, I just got to Stoneville last night which is the beginning of chapter 3, and I don’t get to chapter 8 by January 23rd, what is going to happen to my game then?
I’m ok with the cosmetic clothes going away, I play enough Fortnite to know how chapters and seasons work, but there really isn’t any coherent storyline that matters in that game. While I’m mostly playing this as an open world collectathon I’m kind of also invested in the story at this point.
The shooting stars do remind me of Animal Crossing New Horizons. I wonder if we’ll be able to pick up fragments around the countryside of the ones we see?
Gatchas are weird. Timed anything is annoying. But it’s free, so I’ll see how it goes, nothing lost but my time if I quit.
@get2sammyb it is until you're playing like 5 gachas and counting, then you want passes for all of them lol. I mean that's still pretty cheap but that could've gone towards a game or something yknow
@rjejr The story stuff will be permanent. Events will be timed. I think the shooting star quests will be timed but it’ll tell you in the game which parts have time limits and which don’t.
@gollumb82 Yeah, it's pretty wholesome. Though (me personally) I wouldn't expose my young child to gacha games.
@bizzysgs
Agreed. I’m having my doubts about that as well. There’s also the added issue of my daughter occupying my PS5 more often than I’d like her to 😜
As much as I loved the story and especially the art and design I did start to feel those gacha hooks which are fine if you like logging in daily/grinding certain currencies. It's definitely got strong appeal for children but I don't think it's a good idea to expose them to gacha/Rng. It's kind of conflicting because on the one hand it's completely free to play, the trade off is your time. I played it daily for the first week until I managed to pull myself away. On the first day the hours just shot by, I didn't notice the passage of time at all. I'm not even sure we know yet what affects gacha and Rng have on the developing brains of children. They don't push that cash shop too hard but it is there and some of those outfits are very tempting.
I've have seen what Rng can do to adults, a guy I knew on an Mmo spent his entire honeymoon fund on lootboxes/cosmetics/packs. It wasn't overnight either. He started with a couple each weekend, then added midweek, followed by after work, then in the morning before work. His fiancee got on mic one day crying, she had no idea he was doing it. Or that he'd spent so much, there was no getting the money back. After that they split up, I think he quit the game but others said they saw him around. He seemed really together too but really wanted to be best in slot, regardless of the cost.
There's probably worse cases, that's just one I personally saw on the PSN. I found out after that he'd already had a history with gambling, his fiancee just didn't think it would make it's way into a video game and that gaming would keep him out of trouble. It was in the back of my mind each time I rolled for an outfit or accessory in Nikki, and that was currency I'd easily earned in-game. I talked to a couple of people who have been buying currency for rolls, they aren't getting complete sets at all. I'd love to have been able to buy the game as a regular purchase and support the devs that way. I'd probably still be playing if it went that way too, with optional Dlcs and no loot rolls for cash.
@get2sammyb Thanks. Figured it would be something like that but you never know. I almost missed out on the extremely boring “repair our street lights festival” b/c I wasn’t far enough in the main story yet until the day it began. So I’m ok with timed events that are based on calendar dates, but if they require you to have finished chapter 8 but I’m only up to 5 or 6 by then it’s kind of annoying playing every single day, which I am.
But it’s free, so I really should stop complaining.😂
GOTY 2024 keeps on giving!! So obsessed with this game.
These people really know how to market to the lady gamers.
I hope the update also includes invert controls. I couldn’t play it more than 3 min. Would like to though.
