For those of you who don’t know, Screamer first launched for MS-DOS operating systems in 1995, and was quite ground-breaking for its presentation at the time. It required an Intel Pentium processor due to its advanced graphics, and running it effectively was a flex for PC players at the time.

Now it’s getting a reboot, courtesy of industrious developer Milestone, the studio behind a whole slew of noteworthy racing games, including most recently the Hot Wheels Unleashed titles.

It looks like there’ll be a narrative focus to this particular release, with the title adopting an anime aesthetic, similar to those seen in series like MF Ghost and Initial D. The game’s due out in 2026.

"Drawing inspiration from anime and manga from the ’80s and ’90s, the game’s narrative and visual framework will be its beating heart and soul," the press release reads. "The game features contributions from industry-leading partners, including animated cutscenes created in collaboration with Polygon Pictures – one of the oldest and most renowned Japanese animation studios – and the acclaimed American actor Troy Baker, one of gaming’s most recognisable voices."

While there’s very little else to go on right now, it’s great to see a racing game adopt a slightly different style to the tried-and-trusted photorealism you usually see.
