You Can Get Excited for The Game Awards, Says Reputable Journalist

Wow breaking news... big announcement at The Game Awards... GTA7 is on it's way.

The amount of coverage and insiders trying to generate hype comes across as a little desperate tbh. I'd rather spend my time playing something enjoyable and follow up on any announcements.

For me, the issue is that it's very obviously a show purely about marketing. Trailer after trailer after trailer, boring rehearsed speeches and pre-recorded interviews, you forget 90% of what's been shown with minutes.

The thing about E3 was that you got a steady drip of info across every platform in every type of genre over several days. And you got journalists who were able to go hands on with the games and not only provide written previews but also be able to provide context from their interviews and informal chats with the developers themselves to add a lot of flavour to the articles. Now every single article is a three sentence rehash of a trailer, because that's all they're given

it depends what they consider as big? and is it games already announced like boarderlands 4 or mafia ? or is it unannounced games.

@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy It feels like a weird kind of QVC shopping channel for games. A QVC-type channel where they give awards for the best vacuum cleaners and watches to pretend it's not just a series of adverts. And yeah, E3 had this proper event feel to it, something more weighty and genuine.

I don’t think I could actually be any less excited for this crap. Award shows mean nothing to me. I just want to play games I myself think are good.

Could be that Persona 6 reveal that was rumoured a while ago, but I don't think it'll come out later than 2025 so I'm not sure.

The problem I have with the game awards is it makes a big deal out of the stuff I don’t care about in the games industry- dlc and microtransactions for online shooty games with Hollywood celebrities in them talked about by twitch influencers sponsored by Mountain Dew and Doritos.

We’re constantly told video games are for everyone in the world, and then they focus on the stuff they think that the key demographic for their advertisers like. Great for those people, irrelevant for me.

I couldn't care less. A reality show is better than that dumpster fire.

My money is on Persona 6 (will be on playstation no matter who has the marketing rights) or Bloodbourne Remake.

For a person with a job in Europe it's not feasible watching a show that starts at 1.30AM.

@savarunl always gets on my nerves, I mean it's late afternoon for the yanks, 4 or 5 o'clock, why not like midday, 12ish then at least for us be around 9/10 that's a little more feasible

@GloriosaDaisy Sega/Atlus have to be crunching those devs like crazy. I don't see how they can always have so many games out yearly. Persona, Yakuza and Sonic are basically like COD and Fifa now with annual releases.

@Rich33 - what's the odds that they do an ad for new covers for PS5 Pro - in even more enhanced colours! I guess I'm thinking that Sony have to come with something... otherwise it's going to be a pretty sad way to end the year (30th celebration and all... I mean... we did get sold stress-balls for a reason)

Holy F moments would be Elder Scrolls VI, Witcher 4, or something like Gears or Halo or Forza coming to PS5. Guaranteed to be none of these things

It's just easier to skip the show and watch the trailers the day after on youtube. That way I can watch the two holy ***** bits and skip the few other hours of insufferable self aggrandising bollocks

@breakneck The Yakuza team (Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios) is pretty crazy with their release cadence, but they also reuse TONS of assets.

Sonic Team and that series doesn't really release TONS of games, they're probably also of a smaller budget/scale compared to other AAA Games (a bunch of outside studios also work on various entries, it isn't always Sonic Team doing the development)

Atlus has like 3 MAJOR Internal Teams:
Team Maniax (Shin Megami Tensei and it's various spin-offs)
P Studio (Persona and it's spin-offs which are usually done alongside other external studios)
Studio Zero (founded by the "Big 3" as I affectionately call them, Hashino/Soejima/Meguro, from P-Studio and they've only done Catherine Full Body back in 2019 and now Metaphor)
I believe there's also another team, don't know if they have a specific name (they did Tokyo Mirage Sessions and then Soul Hackers 2)

Basically, TLDR, your underestimating the amount of Studios and outsourced work Sega/Atlus does 😅

I always get a bit excited at these shows and conferences, but I still keep my expectations in check. That being said I enjoyed last year's show and Andy Robinson from what I've seen of him is quite stoic and typically British, so him saying to get excited does lend more weight to it being a good show

Also, normally Geoff would either be bigging it up or telling people to calm down and he's been suspiciously quiet. Doesn't necessarily mean anything but it is unusual for him to be this quiet

Every time they say get excited, I get less excited. I'm not expecting any new major announcements until early 2025. With the announcement of the switch 2 coming, PlayStation needs to show games in return to keep eyes on the PS5.

Yeah, Sony's marketing has been completely dire of recent.

You mention the Pro covers - looking at pics Im thinking the problem may go back to an oversight in the design of the Slim - eg curvature of covers not being sufficient for Pro's air flow requirements, forcing them into making separate covers (its almost nonsensical to do it on purpose). The do they / dont they fit, and silence from Sony was just bad communication.

In fact the whole marketing of Pro was just abysmal, particularly given their target audience. Love the console, but marketing was poor. No confirmed specs, lack of real promoting, 2Gb extra RAM not even mentioned, 2Tb SSD not advertised before price, potentially using 4/5nm chip to reduce Power consumption from expectation, etc.

Then the whole disk drive shortage 'conspiracy' - probably a simple (but silly) cock-up in estimation, followed by a lack of communication which has made the whole thing a much louder fiasco.

And thats not to even talk about how they have been almost silent on upcoming 1st party studios games, or how they managed to turn people against Concord before even showing it (not saying it wasnt bad, but their pushing of Live service, whilst not showing/launching single player games, which has always been Sony's biggest draw, just turned people against them).
Or their No Major IP titles in 2024.... oops we forgot about Astro bot.

In my opinion, they need to miss the game awards, admit their poor communication of recent, and come out swinging with a real presentation specifically aimed to impress customers, and get them excited again.

@Rich33 I think the Pro was a mis-fire. Not because I think it was so bad; just that they really didn't demonstrate (before, during, or after) why it was worth $200 more. I mean... a lot of the incidental press I've read is about how lacklustre or optional the hardware is... or how downright wrong it is that the Pro is performing worse than the vanilla. I didn't buy it because I refused to buy something that I couldn't guarantee ever getting a drive for. 2-3 months later - there's no evidence that drives are coming to Australia in the foreseeable future. That's a production/marketting failure.

I think the disc-drive thing has gone beyond a 'mis-calculation'... either they thought no one would buy the Pro, or no one had done the calculation that many of the Pro owners would want a drive... or they just didn't give a "you know what". It's inconceivable to me that they couldn't / shouldn't have anticipated the consumer drive for the drive (even if it was just scalpers).

So things for Sony aren't cataclysmic ... but it's a case of whoever is running their marketing, their software, or hardware-strategy... needs to be 'corrected' asap. Because they're doing a crazy poor job, compared to what they should have be doing (all things considered).

@savarunl I'm also in Europe but as luck would have it Friday is actually a bank holiday here. Maybe a nap in the afternoon then stay up and watch it.
If it's as dull as the last couple, will probably still fall asleep anyway

I’m tempted to, but I don’t want to disappoint myself. We still need to finish Kingdom Hearts: The Waiting Game first (it’s the game us Kingdom Hearts fans play while waiting in between Kingdom Hearts games). 😅
