The first whispers of a film adaptation of the already cinematic Shadow of the Colossus began in 2010. After several creative reshuffles, The Flash director Andrés Muschietti was hired in 2014. Over a decade later, Muschietti claims it's still happening.
Speaking on Radio TU's program La Baulere del Coso (thanks, TheGamer), Muschietti maintains that the big-screen adaptation of Team Ico's work is "not an abandoned project by any means". Admitting that "I'm not a big gamer, but Shadow of the Colossus seems to me a masterpiece, and I played it several times", the director reveals that a script has been written: "The film has been in development for 10 years and now the possibility of making it is opening up."
As ever, money remains the issue. Muschietti says that getting something made based on a fairly niche IP can be difficult. He explains: "Shadow of the Colossus is a cult game, but a studio runs the numbers to make a good film and says how much it is worth. To give the director $200m, $150m, or $100m. There are different versions of the film, and obviously, I want them to give me $200m, but this is another factor to consider."
