Looking increasingly ship-shape, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii arrives next month on PS5 and PS4 worldwide on 21st February. SEGA has offloaded a solid gameplay overview trailer (using an impressive number of pirate puns) to hold you over in the meantime, highlighting Majima's suitably savage combat options.
The Mad Dog and Sea Dog combat styles can be employed on landlubbers and changed mid-combo for added chaos. This scribe hasn't been able to keep up with the pace of developer RGG's modern, action-orientated offerings, but at least to our eye, the decidedly silly spin-off looks like a substantial upgrade.
What do you think of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii? Is it finally time for Majima to take his place as a protagonist, every bit the equal of Ichiban and Kiryu? Let us know in the comments section below.

This is full video from RGG DirectShowcase. Probably they will create many shorter videos ones to put on Playstation and ramp up promoting game.
I love beat-em-up style games with air combos, it's so satisfying to pull off. I'm happy to see RGG really putting emphasis on it for this game.
This looks nuts. Much more up my street that the previous 2 LAD games combat style. I found them slow and boring.
As a long time fan I must admit not being very excited for this. I always appreciated the blend of heartfelt crime drama with the absurd, but going full absurd undermines what makes Yakuza/LAD special and purely caters to those who just appreciate the series for its memability.
However, I got the 0-6 rereleases at limited run to look forward to.
@tameshiyaku I agree. It is why I also enjoy the Judgement series so much. The new direction is working for them since the memeability goes all over social media and mainstream sites and has translated into sales but I miss the "grit" and "dirtiness" of the world.
Loved infinite wealth, platinumed it, be interesting to see how this ties in to the story, most likely a prequel to infinite wealth
I imagine this is not going to be as wild as the trailers look. Infinite Wealth had a really kinda grounded - relatively - story compared to all of the side shenanigans. Which is true of every Yakuza, of course. So I'm imagining that this is going to have all the standard Yakuza drama - probably a crying Majima - and also swashbuckling nonsense. I'm into that.
@breakneck Judgement is great. We've also got Project Century coming up which is my most anticipated game for now.
One thing studio RGG does really well is telling unconventional game plots. Alone judgement with it's story about the dementia panacea is something that just doesn't feel like "been there done that".
Is this some kind of PG trailer? I miss the blood!
Like a dragon pirate in yakuza is going to be another instant hit.word up son
@tameshiyaku I agree with you. I've lost interest in the Yakuza series. Asides from the emphasis on heavy fanservice, decline in good stories (imo) and hyper focus on silliness, I'm just burnt out with all the reused assets from the animations to attacks.
And definitely the over the top silliness is especially something I'm not a fan of. Some people say "but Yakuza was always this silly" but they're wrong or being disingenuous. I'm half convinced some of those people haven't played the earlier titles too and have only seen "Yakuza silly moments" and think that stuff was what the earlier games only consisted of. Yeah, it had silly moments and there were a few silly optional attacks in combat based around some heat moves that were practically like superpowers but that stuff wasn't there all the time nor was every heat action unrealistic. Kiryu wasn't using Dragon Ball Z powers with literally every regular attack, flying and attacking enemies in the air like Ninja Gaiden and then summoning King Kong to fight alongside him like we're seeing here. I think the earlier titles had the perfect balance between some realism and occasional silliness. For me, that made the silly moments more memorable.
Project Century however looks great and it looks like that'll be completely different from Yakuza in that every asset for that game will be new. It also looks like it'll be more focused on being a lot more serious, realistic and gritty, so I guess people like us can still get the more grounded game we're looking for after all.
