Implicit Conversions, the developer porting the PlayStation classics available with PS Plus Premium to PS5 and PS4, is “dreaming about” adding PS3 support to its proprietary Syrup emulator.
The emulator currently supports a wide array of retro systems, and allows said software to be updated with contemporary quality of life features, like Trophies. However, as part of a roadmap, it noted that it’s “researching and prototyping the possibility” of PS3 support.
It’s important to underline that this is all at an experimentation phase and may not actually be feasible. However, the fact that work is taking place is a positive to begin with.
Many are frustrated that Sony isn’t doing more with the releases in its back catalogue. We believe it has improved its emulation efforts, but we’d like to see it really step that up in 2025, with more classics made available on its modern hardware.
Adding PS3 to its emulation efforts would certainly open a number of new doors, making re-releases of the likes of inFAMOUS and Killzone 2 a distinct possibility. But Sony’s last-last-gen system adopted a notoriously complicated architecture, and may be difficult to emulate flawlessly.
PC-based emulators for the PS3, like RPCS3, do exist and work well. However, there’s a difference between commercial projects and hobby software: a PS5 emulator would need to pass quality assurance and function without any bugs or glitches.
It’s also worth noting that emulation like this would likely occur on a game-by-game basis, so don’t expect to suddenly be able to stick your PS3 discs into the PS5 and play them should any of this come to pass.
With all that said, would you like to see more classic PS3 games made playable on the PS5?
Would you like to see a PS3 emulator made for PS5? (1,571 votes)
- Yes, I'd love to revisit some games from the PS3 era
- Maybe, I'm not really bothered either way
- No, emulation like this is a waste of time and resources

Let me just cut to the chase here: I want MGS4, the FFXIII trilogy, and GTA4.
There are people reading this right now who were not born when those games came out. The fact that they haven't been able to play them legitimately/legally yet is madness.
Would love to see it happen.
Chronicles of Mystara would be the first game I return to.
I couldn't care less now I've been buying them on all on disc since I've kept my PS3, if they were that interested in backwards compatibility they would have done it during the PS4 generation. And PS2 games for the PS3 generation since they changed the revision of PS3 and got rid of hardware playback due to costs and failure rates.
For those like me who grew up with PS1 and throughout heck I can go back to the Sega Master System 1 for god's sake anyhoos when PSN finally got up and running we all dreamed of having a massive catalogue of games from PS1 and 2 but it never happened. PS3 games would need to be done right because of their difficulties getting them to run on PS4 and 5 as well
And where 5 gens in and the store is still rather thin still because it's had the likes of Jim Ryan who believed you don't want to play those games and Hulst clearly is another one who'd rather see more Live Service games. But like I said I just don't care as much as did at the start with hope so now I will continue to collect them on disc.
Here's the thing. I'd rather they take their time and do it right rather than launch a service and have Digital Foundry talk negatively and sour it forever. People still think the PS2 emulation is bad because it launched with bugs that were rightfully called out in DFs video.
The PS3 games are notoriously difficult to port because most studios used their own work-arounds to get their games to run with the architecture. Games will need to be worked on individually by the porting team.
@LifeGirl if they weren't born when GTAIV was released, they are still not legally mature enough til play it today either, if it was available
PS3 is my least favourite Playstation console so I don't have any particular investment in it
Lately i've been buying a couple of PS3 physical games. Last week i bought Wanted: Weapons of Fate (fun game although pretty short) and Sniper Elite V2 (also a fun game). And this week i just ordered White Knight Chronicles II that include a remaster of the 1st game which i never played any of them.
So it would be nice if someday i can played any PS3 disc on PS5. But if not then my PS3 slim is still working just fine, although i'm worried with the machine lifespan because this year my PS3 slim will be 12 years old.
Puppeteer, SSX and Split/Second
Give me those and I'm a happy man for life...
It is obviously a possibility, I'm sure they have it working, the question is if they can get it to work reliably and we'll 100% of the time. If they just started working on it now I wouldn't expect it to arrive until the last year of PS5 or first year of PS6
I want Morral Kombat, Sonic, Rachet and Clank, Batman, Spiderman and Rayman to be emulated
@breakneck has the ps2 emulation improved? I remember hearing how bad it was and avoided it altogether
If they aren't going to remaster them, then I'd like them to emulate the first two Infamous games and Motorstorm games.
There’s so many PS2 games I want made available way before they worry about PS3.
Get me playing Black and SOCOM first please.
Knowing that it's really unlikely we'll get broad PS3 emulation for PS5 and probably PS6, I have kept my PS3 slim, maxed out the HD capacity and loaded it with digital games, supported by a good selection of discs. It also means I can buy PS1 discs as well, which is nice.
I feel that any PS3 emulation on PS5/PS6 would be on a per-game basis, almost having bespoke emulators in place.
What I'd love, is for there to be one future playstation console with the ability to play the physical discs from all its' past selves. I doubt this would realistically happen any time soon, but one never knows.
The dream continues to be dreamed. I'm fine with not getting 100% PS3 compatibility. Heck they don't have that for any of the other consoles as well either. If we could at least get some of the bigger hits going then I would be happy.
Something would absolutely be better than nothing. I want to play Infamous again without firing up the ol' PS3!
Just add the laser to the next console like they did with the PS3 60gb PS2 laser… done!… presuming it has got a disc drive 🫣
Given the state of the PS2 emulator when the first batch was coming out, I don't know how important this "a PS5 emulator would need to pass quality assurance and function without any bugs or glitches" is. Sure, they have to have them running well, but I think Sony would absolutely release PS3 games even if they weren't in a perfect state. Just remember some of the ports they released on Vita, as an example.
Please just let me play Time & Eternity without having to deal with my ancient shoddy PS3 and then I can be happy 🙏😅
So we're one of those households that doesn't throw old systems out and keeps our PS3 plugged in. But I still feel like I would like to see these games brought forward to newer systems, for the convenience, and especially if there can be performance gains too.
Right now I can say that I definitely use the Xbox 360 back compat on Xbox One a lot, specifically because of that convenience – being able to take screenshots/clips and suspend the game for later are invaluable features, and even managing games and DLC is way easier than on X360. So even if I couldn't use my original PS3 discs, I'd still consider PS3 games on PS5 or future PlayStation consoles a selling point.
Full fledged emulation on PS and Nintendo consoles, as in you pop your old game in the disc drive and play, is impossible due to many factors.
I'd settle for individual games if they ever manage to solve the problems.
@LifeGirl hurts right now that Square bait teases FF13 on twitter constantly. Either please rerelease or stop giving us hope lol
@boarderbro88 Yeah apparently it is pretty good now. A lot of the visual mess has been cleaned up.

I’m dying to replay the FF XIII trilogy. Just not for the prices Xbox asks to play it on Series X.
Edit: Just realized I can actually buy the physicial games for Xbox 360 and play them enhanced on my Series X! Bought the first two games for € 5 each, just Lightning Returns to go.
@RagnarLothbrok pun intended? 😆
@PuppetMaster Despite White Knight Chronicles getting middling reviews at the time, I loved it. One of those classic RPGs with a tale of a proper adventure, which is sadly quite rare nowadays. Enjoy.
I’m thinking of getting a Legion Go, if only for PS/3 emulation. Had a ROG Ally and it did that great, but the screen was too small for me. PS2/3 games look bad on a big screen, though (regarding PS5 being able to run those).. Even with a bump in resolution and with AA enabled. Also, RPCS3 still can’t get past full Sixaxis emulation. Some games cannot be completed because of this (Folklore, Killzone 2 etc).
that would be cool but nah i wouldn’t use it anyway . i prefer playing retro games on their native hardware unless it was remastered, plus i love the dualshock 3 controller & ps3 ui
@Member_the_game what a shame
Id kill to play ps3
On my ps5 pro. Ps3 had the best games by far. Hell id even buy of all of my games again just make it happen
So Tennis Elbow 4 would have a rival with Top Spin 4.
I just love to revisit GTA 4 & Episodes from Liberty City. The early F1 games by Codemasters so F1 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013. Also Metal Gear Soild 4! A girl like me can only dream for a wee PS3 emulation on PS5!! 🙂
So many great games from the ps3 generation, I would love to see them pull it off and do similar to what Microsoft achieved with their backwards compatibility program, and have these games playing at better resolutions and higher framerates.
@RextheSheep I have a 360 but now it's been shut off from the store online I wanted to get an Xbox one would you recommend it for my 360 games then ??
@ApostateMage Yeah the game got mixed review from journalist. But i've read plenty of positive user reviews, which is one of the reason why i decided to bought it. Beside that, i'm curious to try Level-5 first game for PS3.
Would I love to see a PS3 emulation & the likes of Sony's catalogue of locked titles like LBP 1 & 2, Infamous,Motorstorm series, Resistance, Sly 4, or the mainstream Ratchet & Clank games or even ones like Rain etc.,appear? Yes.
The main but I have thus far,& not necessarily Implicit Conversions fault, but how hard has whomever the nameless Sony management overseeing the backwards compatibility/ PS Deluxe Classics programme been chasing third party content to bolster up the PS1 & PS2 range?🤔
We had to wait a long time to finally see Dino Crisis,(let alone be able to purchase it),& RE 2 & 3 Classic have still to see light of day despite making it to GOG store. Not holding my breath on seeing the likes of PS1 Colony Wars or Adventures of Lomax?
Or chasing Ubisoft for the PS2 era Splinter Cell games,or E.A. for the PS2 SSX series, or NFS Underground games? Or Rockstar for GTA LCS/VCS? Unfortunately can see music licensing being used too easily to shrug their shoulders for some of the latter.😑
But there's definitely more opportunities to attract & bolster the functional if not spectacular emulation they already have for PS1 & 2 titles....would be such a waste of developing another classics programme like they did on PS4 only to drop it & find most of games didn't work on PS5 until having to come up with a whole new engine from scratch.
I want the PS6 to play all PS1-5 games out of the box. Maybe have a Legacy edition with a more costly disc drive that reads CDs.
They can also monetise old games by whitelisting games on the store for digital purchase and patch in trophies.
Still got my PS3 Slim and 3 fully working DualShock 3s and a stack of discs.
x86 "push pop" architecture vs Cell distributed processing requires a lot of horsepower.
Well I never played MGS4 so would definitely love to have a go at that.
Makes me wonder how (and if) Konami are going to get it running on their next MGS collection when that eventually arrives.
I’d love it but at this point I’m almost certain it won’t happen, my hope is that they just port, remaster or remake the games still stuck in that generation.
I'd literally pay for an official ps3 and ps2 emulator. I don't know why sony wouldn't do it. It would drive more demand for the current consoles. Release one already
JonTheGod wrote:
Before it was released, I was hoping that the PS5 would be revealed to be fully back-compat with everything. I would totally buy a PS6 on day one if it was — the PS5 Pro has proved that there are people willing to go the extra few pennies.
I'd love to be able to play PS3 games on PS5 without having to stream them but it doesn't seem feasible, even with rumors like this that pop up every so often. As long as future PS consoles (however many more gens it lasts) have a disc drive and I can play my games from PS4 on up, that's all that matters. Sony dropped the ball on backwards compatibility a bit in the PS3 era so I don't expect good bc support for games prior to the PS4.
It would be great to have access to all the games we bought on Ps store for the PS3.
Sort it out Sony.
Even via streaming, we should have access to these on any level of subscription.
Is there a way to get updates and see the roadmap for the official Syrup emulator this team are working on?
I think it's awesome and would love to get updates
blessed to have an old CECHA01 that's still kickin. Gives me access to PS1/2/3 on the same TV as my PS5/4
Sony should talk to the RCPS3 Devs and strike up a deal.
There are PS3 games that I waiting to play or replay to this day. Let's hope and pray 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Ps3 emulation would open up a whole new realm of compatibility if made possible, I hope they don't give up on it because it would be greatly benificial to everyone if it worked like Ps1 and Ps2 emulation they have now
@LifeGirl FF13 not being on available even via PS+ stream is such a let down, and it baffles me why they don't just enable the stream version. You can play the entire series except that 1 game, just makes no sense for a series with strong PS history.
I would love to see it emulate the actual discs even if it has to download the game files and not stream the data from the disk like the Xbox does
Whenever it happens, taking time and more. The commercial option won't have the extent RPCS3 has of course of features, PS Home and otherwise but for what it is it's nice to see some interest in it even if takes time.
When Vita happens I'd like to know but Sony couldn't care less or has ported/got remasters for those they care about.
Like Gravity Rush/Tearaway, Freedom Wars Remastered are nice but I mean how many people would want Killzone Mercenary, Uncharted Golden Abyss or others?
Sure the gyro/camera and more but I mean Tearaway was reworked and uses the PS4 camera too right? Emulating it wouldn't be the same of course but even still. Some separate window/sub section for them would be interesting to see how they do. Like ZombiU did the Gamepad. Again I know altering but still. Something to bridge the gap or just not support those titles I guess.
@boarderbro88 I recently played the PS2 emulated versions of the Sly Cooper games and Skygunner, which were more recently added to PS+ and they seem fine to me. There’s not too much in terms of enhancements, but they do seem to be well upscaled and have save state and rewind functionality and that’s nice.
I’d love to have gtaiv and max payne3 on ps5
Moore’s Law Is Dead has already long confirmed its being actively worked on, on a game by game basis.
Stated multiple times on his own shows and across Sacred+ through LSM content.
TLDR: While I have a PS3 and can play PS3 exclusive games, it would be good if they were easily available on PS5, for existing fans but also future new potential players of these games. And not stuck on an aging console with a myriad of hardware issues.
_
I still have a PS3 in my TV cabinet, so can play games like 'Infamous' 1&2 or 'MGS4', but I'm on my 3rd PS3 (YLoD phat & Super Slim with I think a dead PSU). The PS3/360 gen hardware isn't aging particularly well, and the inbuilt battery's of PS3 controllers are likely dying or dead. I got a couple of replacement DS3s when I discovered an issue with my 2nd DS3 (faulty R3 button when playing 'Demons Souls'. They worked, and turned out to be Sixaxis, but I think both would benefit from battery replacements (of which will be potluck generics).
My current PS3, a 160GB Slim with a Crucial MX500 SSD installed, still works well enough, but I try and only use it with PS3 exclusives. Games with ports, remasters etc. I'll play on PS4, PC and so on.
I learned my lesson with the other PS3s, which were used as multimedia devices for games + blu-rays & DVDs, I now exclusively use a standalone blu-ray player for those (which I'd also recommend for anyone using a PS4 or PS5 as a blu-ray player, no need to add extra wear on the £400-£500 console).
I'd be happier being able to play the remaining PS3 exclusives on some more modern hardware, and surely there would be plenty of people willing to pay for the privilege, either though PS+ Premium or like the PS1, PS2 & PSP emulated games, sold individually on the store.
just move on already and make something original why are people so nostalgic for this stuff when we can still just play them on those systems we already have.
@LifeGirl , good! And the Splinter Cell Trilogy HD too!
Fast forward to January 2030: Breaking news and it is absolutely insane. From reliable insiders the rumor is officially believed to be possibly true. True that Sony will as soon as late 2031 release an, at cost, app that will allow backwards compatability with the November 2028 released PS6.
The app will play PS!, PS2, and PS3 games and upgraded to at least 720p for PSI & 2, with a full 1080p for PS3 games. No halfway believable rumor has surfaced yet about a 60fps standard or at least being offered at reduced graphics definitions. Mark your calendar tor late 2031, it is rumored to be possibly insane.
