PS3 Games Could One Day Get Emulated on PS5 1

Implicit Conversions, the developer porting the PlayStation classics available with PS Plus Premium to PS5 and PS4, is “dreaming about” adding PS3 support to its proprietary Syrup emulator.

The emulator currently supports a wide array of retro systems, and allows said software to be updated with contemporary quality of life features, like Trophies. However, as part of a roadmap, it noted that it’s “researching and prototyping the possibility” of PS3 support.

It’s important to underline that this is all at an experimentation phase and may not actually be feasible. However, the fact that work is taking place is a positive to begin with.

Many are frustrated that Sony isn’t doing more with the releases in its back catalogue. We believe it has improved its emulation efforts, but we’d like to see it really step that up in 2025, with more classics made available on its modern hardware.

Adding PS3 to its emulation efforts would certainly open a number of new doors, making re-releases of the likes of inFAMOUS and Killzone 2 a distinct possibility. But Sony’s last-last-gen system adopted a notoriously complicated architecture, and may be difficult to emulate flawlessly.

PC-based emulators for the PS3, like RPCS3, do exist and work well. However, there’s a difference between commercial projects and hobby software: a PS5 emulator would need to pass quality assurance and function without any bugs or glitches.

It’s also worth noting that emulation like this would likely occur on a game-by-game basis, so don’t expect to suddenly be able to stick your PS3 discs into the PS5 and play them should any of this come to pass.

With all that said, would you like to see more classic PS3 games made playable on the PS5?
