Sonic X Shadow Generations is sustaining a shockingly brisk pace and has just passed another impressive sales milestone. We imagine SEGA is pretty chuffed: more than two million copies have been sold, with a million additional sales following the game's launch window in October 2024.
The secret to this unusual success is familiar and attributed to the industry's elusive white whale: the transmedia effect. In a press release (thanks, Gematsu) that shows the seriousness of the industry, SEGA, seemingly drunk on victory, proclaimed: "To grow the Sonic intellectual property further, we have focused on transmedia development as an important strategy involving global expansion across various media verticals and merchandising. Furthermore, this fiscal year is themed “Fearless: Year of Shadow” for the Sonic intellectual property, focusing on global initiatives highlighting Shadow."
The apparently quite fun Sonic the Hedgehog 3 just grossed $425 million in December, up from $405 million with the previous film. With seemingly more profits on the horizon, we can see why the persistent publisher/developer would be pleased. The release continues: "In addition to this game, the mobile game Sonic Rumble is scheduled to be released. We will work to raise awareness of Sonic's intellectual property further and expand the brand."
Did you pick up a copy of Sonic X Shadow Generations? Is the now four-decades-long battle between Sonic and Mario destined to end with the destruction of one or both mascot characters? Let us know in the comments section below.

This is where all the suits pat themselves on the back "Obviously we had an AMAZING vision!" No, your employees just made things people wanted to consume.
yep, manipulating people with a film & a nostalgic 13 year old game
Same thing Sony doing with PlayStation productions, and its working
Real reason: No MARIO, No Spider-Man.
Let's call it for what it is, Sonic x Shadow was still an 80 (high for Sonic but extremely poor for Mario). Sega had the entire Switch (the dominant platformer market) market for the game.
Well, yeah...they can't just coast off making "good games,'' like SOME developers.
I'd imagine the movie would have contributed to it's success but more importantly, they made a great 3D Sonic (well Shadow) game, easily one of my favourites from last year
Some comments above lay fair criticisms but I will say this worked on my wife. The only game she plays is Mario Kart. Otherwise she is a sports freak. She became obsessed with Sonic and Shadow and now wants to play this game. Hook. Line. Sinker.
@breakneck if you actually read the reviews, people took points away because the original generations wasn’t updated enough…
Not because of “Shadow Generations” itself.
I like Generations (bought this in the PSN chrimbo sale) and had the collectors edition on the 360. Enjoyed unleashed etc but for me Sonic died by fireball when all of these lame characters and cringe dialogue started with Adventure. It's absolutely awful to me and the fan base is a bunch of nuts.
@breakneck this comment is disgenuous because extremely poor timing was one of the least of Superstars' mouting problems.
@Zedecks Frontiers wasn't good either but a lack of competition made it successful.
@breakneck Frontiers was successful because people liked the game. If what you said was true sales would’ve dropped off.
Switch wasn’t even that dominant sales wise for either of these games also. PlayStation actually had a higher percentage of buyers at least at launch for both games.
Also the game dropped the same week as god of war ragnarok.
It was successful not only because it was a remake of the last good Sonic game by Sonic Team, 13 years ago but also it had the promotion and hype of the Sonic 3 Movie.
Not to mention, Sonic Generations story was always the weakest part and the rewrite made it worse.
