It's not looking good for Crysis 4, folks. Developer Crytek has just announced layoffs that will impact 15% of its 400-strong workforce, and it turns out that the long-awaited sequel has been "on hold" since last year.
The company's statement on its current situation is rather frank. It outlines "unfavourable marketing dynamics", and says that its previous trajectory was deemed unsustainable.
Basically, Crytek is going to focus on its multiplayer extraction shooter Hunt: Showdown for the foreseeable future, as it attempts to stabilise the business.
"Even after ongoing efforts to reduce costs and cut operating expenses, we have determined that layoffs are inevitable to move forward," the developer writes. Naturally, we wish everyone impacted by the layoffs at Crytek all the best.
Crysis 4 was announced back in January of 2022 — nine whole years after the release of Crysis 3. Clearly, it's taken a while for the project to get off the ground — and now it sounds like it's been grounded all over again.

Is it in bad taste to call these layoffs a Crysis?
Awww man. I hope theyll continue developing the game. The first (4)3 were excellent
An actual "Crysis" is a more fitting tag line.
Crysis 2 was peak when it came out, but the multiplayer was god awful.
@Oram77 huh?? the multiplayer was fun to me . what was wrong with it other than the choppy sub 30fps
@nomither6 Maybe have been abit harsh saying that. It's crazy to think studios use to throw multiplayer on their games, Uncharted 2 online was a good time.
@Oram77 blasphemy! I loved the multiplayer. So much chaotic fun 😌
@Loamy Lol Like I said maybe I was being too harsh, I just remember there was one trophy that required you to play the multiplayer SIX MONTHS after your first match...
The OG Crysis fame was much more based on its graphical prowess than the actual gameplay.
Finished it once, was OK, but as a game it did not rise up to match the hype around it's name.
Goes double for it's 2 sequels, which I found too boring after a few hours, and never finished them.
Imo it would be best to leave it at the current trilogy.
But if somehow a 4th game gets to be made in the future, I hope it's a complete reboot, with reinvented gameplay and mechanics.
Good luck to Crytek. Hopefully they fix their Crysis...
I remembered playing the 1st game on PC eons ago back in 2007. The graphic looks gorgeous and was one of the reason that gave me motivation to build PC gaming. I think i spent quite a lot of money to build one that run the game at mid-high setting. But i felt the gameplay was mediocre af and after i finished it i just felt...empty. After that, i never bother to check the 2nd and 3rd game, which i heard they aren't as good as the 1st game.
@Oram77 oh man I hate those. I can't remember the specific game but I remember one trophy like that where you had to wait years 😂
@Loamy Stanley parable 2? 10 years one of those
@PrincessPeach11 that's the one! I'm guessing you can bypass it changing the system date or something? If not, I'll be back in 10 years 😂
The entire industry is really in a bad place right now. ☹️
Damn, that sucks. Was really looking forward to a fourth game. The first one sucks on Playstation (bad port, dated design), but Crysis 2's campaign is one of my favourite shooters. Crysis 3 was...OK. Was hoping to see Crysis 4 push the envelope graphically with hopefully some new gameplay ideas.
That explains why these guys have been pushing non stop stupid ass events for the past few years.
Shame. This is a decent series. I enjoyed 2 and 3. Not so much the first tho.
how are these relics still around? they spent more time putting out crypto coins than actual games.
I hope Crysis 4 can resume at some point, I still regularly replay the original and CryEngine needs to be supported by more developers over UE5
Hunt Showdown is growing they say, interesting. Hope that’s right!
If you haven’t played the -Crysis 2 remaster on PS5 yet I implore you, it’s fantastic
Hunt is fantastic, so I'm glad they're at least committing to supporting that for the foreseeable future.
DRAG!! I absolutely love the Crysis series and it's one of my favorite FPS titles. Was really looking forward to this. Oh well, seems to be my luck these days with some games.......
Think I've played Crysis 2 to a point where I stop and quit every time I just find it boring
