Bandai Namco has revealed that Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero has surpassed 5 million sales worldwide, making it an undeniable hit.
The throwback anime fighter launched in October of last year, and managed to sell over 3 million copies within its first 24 hours — so it's sold a further 2 million since then. What's more, it's now the fastest-selling Dragon Ball title ever on console.
The hype for Sparking! Zero was through the roof ahead of release, with it being positioned as a true successor to the incredibly popular Budokai Tenkaichi series from back in the day.
Nostalgia played a large part in that initial push, but it also helps that Dragon Ball itself has been enjoying something of a renaissance in recent years, primarily through Dragon Ball Super's manga, anime, and movies. Sparking! Zero taps into that by featuring a bunch of playable characters from Super.
They're obviously different games, but Sparking! Zero's still got to shift another 3 million copies if it wants to catch Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, which hit 8 million sales last year.
Still, it's clear that Dragon Ball is huge business for Bandai Namco, so don't be surprised to see another big budget adaptation be announced in the relatively near future.

Looking forward to that Daima content…
And please, please, please… man, do I hope we get Moro. How insane would that final form be? Also I feel like he’d be an intense character in earlier forms from a mechanical perspective.
Game was a disappointment to me personally. Very barebones game content wise. Also for a game that sold 5 million copies they have done practically the bare minimum support wise.
@Shad361 The name itself alone, sells. I've noticed plently of flaws within the game myself, but that was never going to stop the majority of the fanbase either hyping it up or defending it. Game's a massive skip to me.
Totally deserved success. This game is the very best I've played so far.
I even prefer it to FighterZ, which surprises me.
@Shad361 what do you mean?
The graphics and presentation are without a doubt perfect.
But not enough content?
There are about 180 fighters(and I know many of them are different versions of Goku and Vegeta) and more to come, there are a ton of levels and tracks. They even updated the local VS mode with the levels.
There's a story battle for single player fun, great online mode and much stuff to unlock
What's missing in your opinion?
@Nintendo4Sonic Characters aren’t enough at this point. Especially when most of these characters were in other Tenkaichi games, that gimmick doesn’t hit the same.
The only real offline modes are:
Episode “story” battles. which has a bunch of boring sideshows. Also didn’t use any of the GT or Movie things, yet it’s still somehow quantity over quality and padded out.
Custom battles…with no voice acting, unnatural dialogue, and pretty much no real animation.
The game lacked fun modes with replay value. Customization is barebones.
Online doesn’t have crossplay or rollback and it was filled with exploits.
