Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii has reassured fans that the next mainline entry in the RPG series, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, is still very much in development. Almost four years on from its original announcement, fans have just a logo to fuel their excitement for the follow-up to Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. However, Horii states there is no need to worry.
In a livestream over the weekend, the series creator quickly passed comment on the next mainline project, revealing the developer is "working hard on Dragon Quest XII". He hopes that more information about the game will be released "little by little".
While the Dragon Quest series is alive and well through other titles like Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, the continuation of the franchise through entirely new games has stalled somewhat. Dragon Quest XII was originally announced in 2021, and meaningful updates concerning the RPG have been few and far between. Most recently, series producer Yu Miyake was moved to Square Enix's smartphone division.

It probably won't be released this year, but hopefully we get a date fir next year.
I’m sure there were delays due to Toriyama’s passing. Almost everything linked to him had a setback on its release date, even things that were largely completed when he passed like Dragon Ball Daima. Got to wonder if Toyotoro also inherited Dragon Quest illustration duties.
Looking forward to this one though. Always love Dragon Quest.

I enjoyed DQXI. It'd be interesting to see if DQXII will have a different art style altogether or will it be a new take on its Toriyama roots. Heck, the combat might even be slightly different. I'd be down for a Metaphor/Persona 5 Strikers combat.
I hope after DQ12 releases they will consider making DQIV and V as HD-2D.
Dragon Quest XI is one of the best games that came out on the last generation of consoles. I absolutely adore it, and while I would love to play the next one soon, I want them to take their time to polish it to perfection.
Don't know why people are worried, it's Dragon Quest, there is no way Square Enix would cancel a new mainline game.

I'm skeptical how "darker" this new DQ will be. Guess slimes can be in darker shade
@dimi I guess they will use the original design of the Slime before Toriyama redesigned it.
