Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software is currently making a sequel to its popular wizarding simulator as well as an expanded version of the first game, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has reiterated. Warner Bros has already all but confirmed Hogwarts Legacy 2 will happen, calling it one of the company's "biggest priorities" in coming years, but has remained quiet about re-releasing the first entry with more content.
In a deep dive into the development issues Warner Bros is facing — which highlights the many struggles of the Wonder Woman project — Schreier touches on how Avalance Software "is now working on new content for Hogwarts Legacy as well as a sequel". In a previous report, he claimed parts of Suicide Squad team Rocksteady Studios have been drafted in to help with development of the new content.
As for the sequel, however, Schreier reports there are concerns among the higher-ups at Warner Bros. "Questions linger about whether the success of the first game can even be replicated, let alone surpassed — or if the pent-up demand has already been satiated," he said. The best-selling game of 2023, the first Hogwarts Legacy has sold over 34 million units.
While it has gone back to the original game to add new features like Photo Mode and mod support, Avalanche Software has stopped short of adding traditional expansions to Hogwarts Legacy. However, it sounds like such a content drop will happen later this year.

Sold.
It’s an absolute no brainer for the company HWL2.
It’s as sure as Nintendo making Mario kart 9
"Will people even be interested in the sequel to our game that sold 34 million copies?" is such an absurd question that could only come from the incompetency at WB. All they have to do is throw in Quidditch and it will print money
Simple answer; no. Hogwarts Legacy is such a bore fest outside of the main story quests.
I only started playing it recently and I honestly can't understand all the hype this game got when it first released. With all the rubbish to collect there are no true challenging puzzles and, outside of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, like 1 NPC to do a simple quest for in each town.
How on earth are they making a completely new game, let alone more content for the first? I doubt it will sell anywhere near as well as the first.
Gimme that sweet sequel! No doubt I’ll go for the platinum just like the first game.
As an HP fan, I really enjoyed Hogwarts Legacy. I don’t think the game needs added content, but I think a sequel might work. It’s hard to say, since the first game was so expansive and detailed, it leaves less room for further exploration of that universe.
It’s good to see the developers realize the limitation: “Questions linger about whether the success of the first game can even be replicated, let alone surpassed — or if the pent-up demand has already been satiated”
It’s rare to see a company have restraint and not want to immediately squeeze an IP dry and expect ever increasing returns.
Nevertheless, there’s room for a little creativity I believe, and having a spin-off HP game that perhaps has different settings (Having quests at the Ministry of Magic, competing in a Tri-Wizard tournament, etc.)
@Th3solution If the added content was a DLC quest line crafted in a true RPG fashion with in depth dialogue choices, I'd be down. That's what I'd want the next game to expand on. Not the A or B with no real difference approach that the original has. It'd be cool to see if they can handle that kind of thing
If they want it to fail, they just need to leave hogwarts right after the intro and focus only on a bigger and even more boring open world. Who wouldn't dream of a thousand Merlin quests?
@Th3solution I agree that it will be difficult to add further exploration. The game captured the magic of Hogwarts and the absolute desire to explore the castle that every reader growing up wanted to do. I believe they should expand to other schools! They have laid groundwork for the school in Africa, the books provided two others ripe for exploration, and then you have the Fantastic Beasts references.
I love the game, give me more just don't make it live service please.
HL had a nice castle and a pretty interesting battle system. But that game is really meant for casual players, and even then mainly for women and children. It's a boring simulator collecting thousands of stupid things with a stupid story. I don't understand the good reviews and sales. For me it was the worst game I played last year.
Extremely looking forward to both ^__^. Hopefully some of the new content in the re-release of the first game is Quidditch hopefully Madam Kogawa convinces that clown Headmaster to let us have it 😅
@Ravix That’s a good thought — as detailed and rich of a HP world that Avalanche created, they did leave some meat on the bone, so to speak, with shallow RPG mechanics. The side content can absolutely be improved as so much of it was filler (after the first dozen Merlin trials they get to be a chore) and the side quests and NPC companions can be improved as well.
I think making it a game with a new custom protagonist in a new era, perhaps just a few years later, with some teachers and instructors carrying over but totally new student body to get maybe better storylines going and then, as you say, adding in the more intricate RPG choices for a varied story outcome would be the icing on the cake. It taking place in a school with an IP that depends upon attracting a younger audience means you couldn’t get too crazy with the evil choices and dark options but it could be done.
Bring it on. Hogwarts Legacy was a very fun game. Loved the atmosphere and RPG gameplay.
@TrannosaurusBex I mean, they have a very strong foundation. I agree with your criticisms, but ultimately, their goal now is packing the world with varied activities to engage with.
That doesn't seem like a particularly challenging task to me.
@JuiceboxMeister Yes, that’s another great idea to visit other schools. It would be a huge undertaking to create those spaces from scratch and much more risky. There’s also the issue of getting the endorsement from Rowling if they were to build a new wizard school from the ground up and I suspect it would be a nightmare to navigate the quagmire of getting the creator’s approval and input.
I'm sure it will be one of the best selling things ever, but I kind of feel like they've already done the thing with the most appeal: make the full Hogwarts region that you can explore.
People wouldn't be nearly as interested in a game set somewhere else (see response to Fantastic Beast films). And yes, they can make the mechanics better, but the mechanics aren't why people checked it out in the first place.
Maybe more customisation options? I could see that
They need better leadership. They should hire shu.
@Th3solution yeah, when are school kids ever awful to each other 😂
To be fair, that's why I'd love a past student returning as a detective for a game theme. Some murder and conspiracy etc. It opens up the world so much more, and you will be dealing with other adults more often, maybe even going to the muggle world, which seems like the only thing they can do, using the hogwarts map as a returning area. A Victorian era or earlier muggle world has all kinds of potential as a setting, without killing the old fashioned hogwarts area vibe.
I liked the first one more than I thought I would. I’m sure they’ll find some way to mess up the sequel if it happens, though. These big AAA publishers are like a bunch of dying elephants thrashing about. Instead of learning from their failures, they’re doubling down on what’s caused the wound in the first place.
Day 1 for them both. I never thought I’d want an expansion for a game as much as I’d like one for this game. It’s a game that just feels right for an expansion.
I wonder where they’ll go for a sequel. It would be cool to see another era… or even cooler if you get to see your character from the previous game progress.
@TrannosaurusBex I only played it recently also and I was very surprised at how shallow the game felt outside of the main story and major side stories. I would still rate it as 7.5 or 8 / 10 but it was certainly not the 9 or 10 it was made out to be.
The game oozes theme and Hogwarts itself was beautifully reacreated. That said I did find the gameplay to be a pretty basic Rock / Paper / Scissors < Avada Kadavra format, and the less said about the open world the better. It was large and sprawling but there was nothing off interest to do in it and it all looked the same. It was large just for the sake of being large and you could have achieved the same with 4 zones I reckon. Forest / Lake / Coast / Highlands.
Edit: Forgot my biggest gripe, the story is about evil dark magic and you can run around casting your own dark magic all day long and no one bats an eye. Was especially dumb when Sebastians whole quest is his family hating his dark magic and the game just glosses over the fact that you can also choose to commit wholesale mass murder of humans and goblins.
If they add Quidditch to the sequel it will sell over 40 million copies.
I played HL at launch and finished the main storyline but didn't have the desire to finish up any side content, and was honestly kind of disappointed with it overall, considering my expectations. After over a year of not coming back to it once, I started fresh and LOVED IT. Ended up doing 100% everything and got the plat. Not sure why it didn't take the first time.
Sign me up! I can't believe it's even being debated whether a sequel would sell. How do they not think that the timing would probably be perfect to pair with the HBO show?
I hope that the sequel will greatly expand the actual school activities and add tests and assignments you could fail, like something in Mana Khemia.
In reality sequel will probably be live service, it's WB.
@Ravix Ooh yeah, that could be good. Returning as a new instructor (Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher maybe? 😅) undercover to investigate something nefarious at the school.
Shame it's meant to be a soulless live service game...
Hogwarts legacy was incredible. Id buy a sequel in a heartbool. Even that GOTY version shall be mine man i want to support these developers
I had zero interest in Harry Potter going in, I’d just heard the first one was good. It was sooo good. Definitely up for a sequel.
It is best to put all resources on the new game. Make it great and dont waste things for the first one. But they have huge showes to fill.
@TrannosaurusBex I’m with you on this. It’s so shallow and I can only remember 2 quest lines from the whole game. Most of the characters have nothing to them, the house you choose barely matters and the open world has nothing going for it outside of Hogwarts, it’s just tedious fetch missions and open world collectible and puzzle filler. It falls flat on pretty much every aspect that makes RPGs good. This game is average to slightly decent at best and I’ve never understood all of the praise for it.
Just here again to say that trans rights are not irrelevant to this discussion. It’s only irrelevant if you have the privilege of seeing it that way. Discouraging comments like this not only erases many of your readers’ real challenges and lives, but debases video games as an art form. If we want video games to be held in the same regard as media such as film, literature, painting, etc., — in the way many of us have argued for so long — we need to engage in them as we would any of those artistic creations. What I am offering is genuine criticism meant to be constructive in nature. If others choose to respond in an uncivilized manner, those are likely the people who feel pushsquare supports their belief that context has no bearing on these works of art, which is literally and objectively impossible, and that their perspectives and experiences are the only ones that matter.
This conversation is more important now than ever, and pushsquare has the opportunity to support inclusivity—which helps everyone by fostering more consumers and more output—and to seize this moment as an opportunity to show the world why vgs are a vital form of art.
I hope this comment won’t be deleted, and that it will not be seen as “off topic” or meant to inflame. I’m hopeful it will at least merit consideration from someone reading this or on team PushSquare. Thanks.
I'll be there for both! I loved Hogwarts Legacy and could see the sequel being even better. If they improve on the few issues the original had we could be looking at an all-time great!
I'd be down for a sequel. One thing I'd like to see is for it to have a bigger focus on the activities inside the castle, such as attending classes, interacting with other students, and more in-depth side quests.
This is old news.
I will gladly accept more Hog Leg into my life!
The Sebastian storyline from Hogwarts Legacy was the highlight for me so hopefully more of that in the future.
Hogwarts is my favourite game this generation, and a game I keep going back to.
The Pro enhancement is completely overlooked too - play in normal performance and uncap framerate for the best experience and best upgrades (if you have 120hz TV) - everyone talks about other modes but the normal performance mode was where the big upgrades were made, unless you like 30fps with RT
My preference would have been to do a year 2 via a large dlc (and similarly maybe even year 3) that added content and stories. As no mechanics/engine changes are really needed, it/they could just focus on story based content.
Then a sequel could start a new storyline set in a different period.
I would prefer the new game to be a continuation of the first so that all the knowledge and experience I've gained and the time I've invested in developing my character, won't be wasted. The story line ended with looking towards taking owls so there are the senior years and newts to go at Hogwarts yet. The terrain could remain the same too, but with a new story could come a new set of villains and quests within it. One thing I found weird in the first game was being expected to break into people's houses to steal from them. I drew the line at that. I also drew the line at using dark magic. If we ourselves resort to the ways of dark wizards then what justification do we have for fighting against them.
Yeah I'm getting the sequel day one. Loved the first game so yeah I'm sold..
@ECharles
Yeah, same for me - Sebastians story (stories - if you count the tryptych line covered in main quests) were excellent, and a really interesting take on the 'dark' arts (although the books did slightly cover the topic with Harry's use).
They made you really feel his desperation, particularly given his thoroughly abusive uncle, and his best friend (Ominis) who seemed so reluctant to offer any real help or guidance.
My take was that his biggest mistake was not coming to your character more for help.
I have hogwarts... and probably will buy for sure the second game. Its amazing. I advice you to play if not play yet. But will come out before gta 6? No. So in a future promo sure. And the exyras for the first game? Will release before gta 6 too? Hummm will see.
Day one buy for me as a big JK Rowling fan, she keeps making hit after hit!
First game updated for switch 2 please.
Shut up and take my money!
Can't wait to see how WB will screw this one up.
I really enjoyed the game. It had plenty of charm that kept me going to the end and the gameplay was pretty solid. I'd be down for more.
One question, will the expanded first game be better (have more content) than the original one plus the DLC that is and will be available? I find this surprising because the original game is not old.
I'm day one for both. I really enjoyed the first game and I'm sure a sequel in a new time with new characters and areas would be great! I just hope WB doesn't make it a live service game.
I really hope the sequel cuts down the open world. It's all empty fluff outside the Castle, lake and Hogsmead area, just keep that, expand on them and throw away the rest. The game works best in discreet levels, whether it's funneling you or giving you an open-ish area to work in.
Hopefully also expands on the student quest-lines, 1 per house seemed rather limited. The main story lost all steam after the first couple of hours, the random quests were boring, the House quest and the 4 students were the best of the best.
Will the disc be more then a coaster now.
I absolutely adored this game. Growing up in peak HP book and movie releases made me the perfect costumer for this game. That being said it was a dream come true to explore the HP world and even though people complain about all the collectables I really loved it. Reminded me of some cosy games from my childhood from the early 00s.
Only issues was the last open world area in the game was unnecessary and over bloated and the story wasnt anything special, but I still loved the 36 hrs I got out of the game.
Meh, boring, it's a pass.
That's a surprise. Thought, Warner Bros is totally against single-player games and actively push 'live-service' titles as the future for all videogames.
BTW, still have the 1st game in my backlog.
Cut the entire southern half part of the map, focus on a story with smaller stakes as a new first year student of Hogwarts, make creating a social network with your fellow students and teachers a part of the gameplay, and dare challenge your gamers with your puzzles. The first one did a lot right, but had a bad case of the open world bloat too common in recent open world titles
@Th3solution it may be difficult but I hope with its success and the developers handling of all the controversy, quite professionally and successfully done IMO, that it would be less difficult than we imagine to get approval. You are spot on that it would be a huge undertaking to create new school locations from the ground-up though. Would be worth it!
