The great thing about the emerging Chinese development scene is that truly amazing titles can seemingly come from nowhere, and that’s certainly the case with Tides of Annihilation.
This London-based character action title simply looks incredible, and is shaping up to be the PS5’s next big thing.
An extended gameplay demo follows on from the release’s announcement at State of Play this week, and it just looks brilliant. While you’ll play as heroine Gwendolyn, the system will see you summoning spectral knights to fight by your side, each with different capabilities and combos.
So, you’ll need to think carefully about your loadouts and how you want to implement these spectral knights into your approach. We suppose some good points of comparison would be Final Fantasy 16 and Wuthering Waves, both of which see you utilising different summons as part of their combat systems.
The video shows off more than just combat, too. It also reveals how the aforementioned spectral knights will fit into the title’s puzzle mechanics and traversal, while we also get to see some amazing set-piece moments, as the world transitions between modern and medieval London.
Aside from some performance hiccups – this is an early build – we reckon the game looks absolutely unbelievable. It’ll be enhanced on the PS5 Pro, so you can expect the best possible image quality at 60fps.
This one has rocketed right to the top of our wishlist.

This is incredible.
I only need, like, 1 second in the state of play to know that this game is either from korea, china or japan lol. Looks like most good AAA games will be from those 3 country now.
Oh well, can't wait for this 😃
Playing a Chinese game? I’ll show you something interesting. In China there are two types of video games, Genshin Impact and Devil May Cry. Infinity Nikki? Genshin Impact. Phantom Blade Zero? Devil May Cry. Despite being a third-person action game, Naraka Bladepoint is Genshin Impact.
Eastern Devs are cooking right now. Japan has been on fire for time but now the influx of Korean and Chinese talent is great. Western gaming is in a lull right now but competition like this will bring it back someday. And Gwendolyn's design is fantastic.
Yes, „slightly inspired“ by my favorite Umbra Witch, and looks slick as hell. But unfortunately, also talkative as hell.
@wiiware It's a Chinese developer.
This looks amazing. Hopefully this release this year can't wait to play it.
Chinese and Korean devs became better and better with their games. I'm not surprised if sooner than later they became powerhouse and Sony would prioritize them over Japanese devs.
@get2sammyb Man the chinese devs is really stepping up their game huh, I though wukong is kind of scam at first, I'm really surprised the game is really good.
I really hope western devs step up their games too, since their games are really good especially at ps4 era, I still remember the hype for uncharted 4 and spider-man ps4 😃
So glad this isn't another soulslike. Just tell me that I can play with the original voices and I'm sold.
Jennifer English is a great VA (Shadowheart from BG3, Carlotta from WuWa) but the voice direction seems horrible
Rest looks great though
Yus more DMC style games! Although that voice acting is just annoying and awful.
This looks interesting but I think the VA for the main character is too young sounding. Her voice is too high pitched.
Looks pretty good aside from the voice acting (delivery and overall sound needs work). Definitely going on the watchlist.
Chinese developers are really coming into their own now. Looking forward to this one.
The protagonists from Forspoken got a British accent and the talking bracelet was exchanged for a shapeshifting bird lady. Then the buildings from Inception started warping around. And to top it all off, Sin from Final Fantasy X is one of the bad guys.
Thank you, Tencent~ 😚
This looks excellent and very much like something I will play.
Am I going mad or did we not learn it was coming soon? I hope so, as this is right near the top of my wish list too...
That voice acting kills it for me, couldn't manage more than a minute!! Is she meant to be a robot built in Eton?
Community at large: The demo voicing/dialoguing isn't authentic enough.
Tough crowd.
But then again, only English speakers exists in this world. 😅
Visuals - amazing
Gameplay - interesting
Dialogue - cringe
Yup looks like we have another banger on our hands here.
I paused this video to say I've only watched two minutes of it and I'm ready to pre-order
This game reeks of DMC5 and I'm ready to take a big whiff
Voice acting was not a strong point here but I liked everything else very much!
I want this to be good, I like the combination of themes, but it does have a bit of a Forspoken vibe, I hope I'm wrong with this.
The only game during the state of play that got me hyped
One of the few SoP highlights for me. Tides of Annihilation looks like it could be one of the better DMClike games, really hope that it is. Framework in some areas plus the voice direction needs some fixing though.
Looks just incredible and it’s the studio’s first game! Asian devs are carrying this generation hard…
This looks fabulous. I am 100% in
looks fantastic glad hack and slash is coming back
Instantly became one of my most anticipated games. Looks fantastic.
A little Shadowheart for your Final Fantasy XVI. When Clive just doesn't cut it, it's time to bring in Gwyndolin 😂
Who knew English culture was coming back in such a big way for the Asian market!
This was the highlight for me I think. It looks great
Love everything but the voice acting, absolutely fooking horrid!
It looks great and all, but the characters sound as emotional as a british queen's guard, not fitting the action going on around them... a bit immersion-breaking.
@DonJorginho Right? Like AI reading from a book or smth...
@Shinnok789 Yeah I’m puzzled by it as Jennifer English is one of the VA in this demo and she’s incredible in Baldur’s Gate 3.
The voice direction/script definitely needs working on, but a lot of positive signs on the other fronts! Great to see eastern devs emerging again with quality work.
DMC combat? I think I'm gonna enjoy this way more than Stellar Blade.
This was my game of the show by a mile!
Honestly, at State of Play, I was concerned this was another Soulsy game, but now that I see it in action, it looks like it could be a Forspoken-ish game with Bayonetta influence. Looks like I’ll add it to the wishlist after all!
I’m a bit burnt out of new things with post-apocalyptic imagery, but man did I enjoy the buildings warping for high speed platforming.
Looks fantastic! I'm a sucker for DMC style combat so count me in on this. The Spectral Knight system sounds really cool and interesting too. Definitely one to watch.
Im sorry... "...next big thing"?! The PS5 hasn't had it's FIRST big thing yet!
This looks like Playstation's answer to Astral Chain. Except way better and not copaganda.
@Pompey71 Guess Astrobot must of slipped your mind...
This looks way better than Lost Soul Aside.
This game looks great! The combat looks flashy and expressive (with depth and challenge obviously TBD). The world is intriguing aesthetically, with the big set pieces looking amzing so far, but I hope they also use the strangeness going on to come up with some fun puzzles as well (please be more complicated then the "send the knight summon over the water" bit in the trailer).
The voice acting is shrug and the armor is clearly prioritizing cool/horny, but both of those are minor complaints. We have been eating good with action games the last few years, and this looks like another promising contender!
Gameplay looks fun, but that dialog/voice acting was grating and really flat in some areas.
Character design is really dull too, feel like I've seen it a million times and the priority clearly was titillation over anything else.
It's fun it's set in London but it all looks rather grey, even for London.
I dunno, as impressive as it all is, unless I see more to make me think otherwise I don't think I'll be prioritising this one.
I'm so confused by the VA complaints cause at the very least the MC sounds great. This is far from a Xenoblade 2 situation where damn near every character sounded awful especially the MC lol
The gameplay itself looks nice and I absolutely love the setting and style of the game. I look forward to seeing more
Are they all going to be souls / action games. Where's a good Chinese rpg or shooter?
Glad they consulted with Dick Van Dyke on how to do a cockney accent.
Derivative, like everything out of China. That dialog was just awful, don' t think I could get through a whole game of that . The visuals were well done but the animations were not fluid and awkward looking. Disclaimer: I only made it about 4 minutes into the video.
Asian devs knows the type of female designs that appeal to everyone, meanwhile Western devs are too focused on appealing to 1% of the population and then they wonder why their female-led games are flopping lol
So down for this game. Simply amazing!
@Judal27 Agreed. Don't know what these guys are smoking. All it needs is some more dialogue direction, but the voices are brilliant. There was another person saying "her voice is too high pitch" like, what lmao
I would never have guessed the VA was British, she was Dick Van Dykeing so hard.
I'm also not convinced it's possible for someone to know what a car is, and think a pram might be one.
The platforming and 'puzzles' look clumsy too, and I'm sad that washed out grey is making a comeback in games.
But I enjoy seeing how other countries depict Britain, so I'd probably play it for that alone. Mordred? Sign me up.
I felt this State of Play should have been called State of Play Asia which isn't a bad thing at all because it looked like most games came from there. This one reminded me of Shadow of the Colossus, I'm still stoked for a game that's from Microsoft though Expedition 33
Heartwarming to see how Stellar Blade has broken barriers and reintroduced the marginalized and unfairly maligned group known as Hot Babes back into video games.
This looks amazing. The voice acting is Stellar Blade levels of bad so it's probably best to do like that game and play with the OG voice acting
@AFCC I really hate how in recent years VA has become a lot more animated. It doesn't really suit the danger the characters find themselves in. Shepard in ME got criticized for being a bit bland, but in retrospect I would take characters like him over 99% percent of protagonists since. Take yourself seriously gaming industry!
I am very intrigued by this. The gameplay looks quite flashy and definitely reminding me of FFXVI. I really like the setting.
It’s also giving me Forspoken vibes unfortunately, and we all know how that turned out. So I’m tempering expectations. But otherwise this probably was the game of the show for me.
Tiddies of Annihilation
@Nakatomi_Uk
That game is developed by Sandfall Interactive, and published by Kepler Interactive. Microsoft has nothing to do with it. Also, people should really temper their expectations when it comes to that game I feel…
Thanks for the reminder to add this to my Steam Wishlist.
This one looked awesome! I hope it does well.
Meh, it looks flash and dull at the same time.
It does look flashy. It reminds me a lot of stellar blade and a little of ff16. I dont know though. Im not big on this post apoctalyptic run in games. If its like fallout i can be down with it because of the lore but these games really dont invest into the lore enough. Its mainly just window dressing for big battles. So it may be a no go for me as beautiful as it looks. These games also require very little writing or any good writing anyway.
Looks pretty damn cool apart from that awful voice acting. Graphics look amazing and I can't wait for the inevitable digital foundry deep dive where everybody learns its not really running @60fps and there's controller lag..
Game looks phenomenal visually, but I’m just getting tired of this type of gameplay.
@Dogonit Gameplay is no 1 when comes to character action genre. If the devs focus more on story / writing then they must spend more on making long story cutscenes with characters yapping about lore A-Z and that will slowing down the pace. But people don't want to be slow down watching long story cutscenes when they're playing character action games. They wants to keep playing and feels bad ass.
Beside, with less focus on writing means the devs will avoid problems that always plague story focus games.
@PuppetMaster well i consider lore gameplay. Games like fallout have lots of lore and intersting stories but dont have long cutscenes so it is possible to make games that do it well if you have a good team. This game seems to be a clone of stellar blade in lots of ways and thats ok. I like stellar blade but i dont love it for reasons already mentioned. So if gameplay is all you want then thats fine, get the game. But i expect more from a game for my hard earned money so more than likely this game will get a pass from me.
I will take the otherside - ShadowHeart is my video game GF, I will buy this this for the voice acting alone. Plus the game looks really cool.
