Hollywood star Kaitlyn Dever knew what she was getting into when accepting the role of Abigail "Abby" Anderson, and would not be the first woman to receive abuse from unhinged "fans" for portraying the role. HBO is aware of the extreme toxicity in some parts of the video game community concerning the character, assigning Dever additional security during filming. The Abby actress was recently asked about the almost-certain wave of awfulness headed her way.
Speaking to ScreenRant, Dever said she wants to do right by true fans, and bring to life the complex character in the way creator Neil Druckmann and showrunner Craig Mazin imagined. Abby's muscles are less relevant in this iteration, and there are almost certain to be other creative changes made along the way. Asked whether she pays attention to how audiences are anticipating her portrayal, Dever said:
"Well, it's hard not to see those things on the internet. It's hard not to stop myself from looking at it every once in a while, especially going into this, for sure. And I want to do this character justice and make the fans proud by bringing her to life in this kind of way. But my main focus was just the collaboration between Neil and Craig, and making sure I was really getting to the core of who she is and what drives her and her emotional state; her anger and her frustration and her grief and all of that. I wanted to make sure that that was what I was focusing most of my energy on."
Are you looking forward to the return of HBO's The Last of Us, and the undeniable ratcheting up of stakes in Season 2? With Druckmann recently dousing our hopes for a third entry in TLoU video game franchise, there's a real chance the TV series will be the last look we get at Naughty Dog's captivating universe. Let us know what you think of all this in the comments section below.

Are the expectations high tho? TLOU2 didn't sell well enough to guarantee a third game.
ND would probably only do it if Intergalactic and the next Uncharted flop.
I hope she stays well away from the toxic incel hellhole that is the TLOUP2 subreddit.
@heavyartillery56 We are getting a 3rd game, Neil was just really downplaying it to keep the focus on their new game. Also TLOUP2 sold really well.
@DennisReynolds In comparison to the OG the sequel didn't do all that well despite the budget being higher. Just like SM2.
It makes no business sense to invest many years into TLOU3 unless they are in a Bioware situation where they tried everything else first.

@heavyartillery56 It sold over 10M as off 2 or 3 years back what doesn't include the remaster sales what we know also sold really well. The show is a Emmy award winner and the latest trailer has 19M views on the Max channel alone so yeah interest is very high.
@DennisReynolds And yet making a sequel would be extremely expensive and time consuming while not guaranteeing increased sales.
TLOU3 is only happening if they have no other choice.
@heavyartillery56 I guess every Pokemon game since Gen 2 flopped then? Kingdom Come 2 bombed i guess because it hasn't beaten the first game. MH Rise sold less then World so failure right?
@heavyartillery56 Fun fact ND usually have 2 games on the go being made, there's a good chance TLOUP3 is already in pre-production.
Face it dude TLOUP2 was a big success, the show is a big success and a 3rd game will come at some point.
@DennisReynolds ND is a much more expensive studio that operates with higher budgets and less game releases than Pokemon.
Even SM2 disappointed so badly that they canceled the DLCs.
We are only getting TLOU3 if they have no other choice.
@heavyartillery56 Wait you have insider knowledge on why Spidey 2's DLC was cancelled? Did you pull that from arse? I ask because no reason was giving but giving they have Wolverine, Venom, Spidey 3 and X-Men being made i expect they just don't have the man power for DLC.
As for ND well they can make whatever they want and have a blank cheque from Sony. Intergalactic is their new game because i expect after 20ish years they want to make something new that isn't Uncharted or TLOU.
@DennisReynolds And this is the point of the convo where all that matters is the success of Intergalactic.
Seeing as how they disabled the comments on YT... I wish them luck. They'll need it.
@heavyartillery56 SM2 was successful because SM3 has been confirmed to be in development. Might want to leave that out of your argument.

@heavyartillery56 You have no idea why there's not going to be any DLC for SM2. No one does. Most likely the DLC was scrapped because Insomniac wanted to get started on SM3 right away.
@heavyartillery56 Spiderman 2 sold 11 million copies as of May 2024 or 7 months after released in October 2023 and Sony called the game a "great success" in their financial report.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2024/05/marvels-spider-man-2-swings-11-million-sales-as-sony-calls-ps5-exclusive-a-great-success
So i'm not sure where did you heard about Spiderman 2 sales "dissapointed so badly". I mean, 11 million copies in 7 month is a great achievement considering the first game needs 11 month to sold 13 million copies.
And people only assumed Spiderman 2 will have story DLC's when Insomniac never say there will be story DLC's. I personally don't see why Insomniac should make Spiderman 2 DLC when they already lineup Wolverine, Spiderman 3, X-Men game, and a new Ratchet for the next 5 years.
I wonder how casual fans who don't know the story of TLOU will react when THAT scene happens in the show? Or Will they back away from it because they knew it was horribly implemented the way it was? They already chose a less roided out actor to play the role. I guess only time will tell.

Gentlemen, be careful not to bracket everyone into the same by calling everyone who disagrees with your viewpoints toxic hellhole incels, mouth breathers, nut jobs and trolls.
I loved TLOU so I saw the HBO series which ultimately felt too short and rushed. I didn't like the story of TLOU2 and the marketing was also strangely similar to MGS: 2, but ultimately I think Raiden was far more likeable than ****.
Spoilers
Playing as **** frustrated me every step of the way, and I don't need that experience remediated into television.
@ATaco I think tv show fans will have more mature reaction for that scene compare to game fans who just goes nuts and sent death threat towards Druckman and Laura Bailey.
@EfYI
I agree with what you're saying.
This is what I've always found so hypocritical when people believe they are on some moral high ground. They say stuff like "Stop being such a toxic person, we here believe in positivity and good vibes etc etc.........add insulting and demeaning vocabulary here."
@EfYI agree with your post about bracketing people.
I did like the show and will be back for second season.
I actually did like playing **** , but the point where you have to chase and fight **** did ‘feel’ very weird and uncanny valley the first time I played, so kudos to ND for making me feel that way, which I think is what they wanted.
@ATaco no. He/She used ‘their’ words to highlight a wrong situation.
EyFI didn’t insult anyone.
@PSme
I edited my message to be clearer with what I meant.
@EfYI unfortunately there are a number of people on any site that believe that their view is correct (which is fine... everyone should have a viewpoint) - but they will get disrespectful and abusive to others that don't agree with them...
When the truth is that there's a lot of diverse views - and lots of reasons why people have different views. However, apparently diversity is something that only they get to define.
Edit - and for the record, I love TLOU, and even more so TLOUp2... but I also can see why a lot of people felt it was narrative manipulation - and it was... but it's impact on each person is unique. I can also appreciate that it was a figurative punch to the face for many fans of the original. I just don't like when people say "you shouldn't feel that way"...art should be up to each of us to appreciate (or not).
@DennisReynolds @Enuo @heavyartillery56
On sequels, you're all kind of right.
A sequel is a guaranteed sales push over an original IP due to the first game, positive word of mouth from the first game etc however a third game can actually be difficult.
Marketing research has proven that its very difficult to get people in to the series for the first time when you're on the third title. Mass Effect famously struggled with this and ran a rather ridiculous PR campaign focused around the concept that "Mass Effect 3 is perfect time to enter the series", which if you've played the game you know is a really ridiculous statement. It eventually underperformed.
Same deal with Dead Space 3, they basically found they had probably reached the peak of their intended audience for sales with 2 so had to pivot to including more action and multiplayer in DS3 in an attempt to expand the already stretched player base for a title. The result was a all over the place third game that original fans didnt like and new fans didnt play.
I do think we'll get 3 eventually, although I do think its concerning that Neil seems sort of burnt out by the series and is talking down potential sequels at the moment. He has been laser focused on this very depressing universe for a long time now, I can see how that can get to you.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare yes it seems to me that no diversity is allowed when it comes to TLoU 2 as demonstrated by this article, her statement and certain people in the comments.
There are only two groups of people allowed:
1, “true fans” - those who like the game.
2, “toxic, extreme, hateful INCELS” - absolutely anyone who doesn’t think the game is a 10/10.
@PuppetMaster I agree with large parts of your post, but don't believe all that Insomniac information on what games are coming is accurate. Yes at one snapshot in time that was their plans, but plans change, and the information is now outdated.
Until they officially announce anything any of those projects might have been cancelled in pre-production and the further we get from the leak the less likely it is to be accurate. Of course they might be a perfect company and manage to make them all work, but it's highly unlikely.
@heavyartillery56 I feel you need some perspective.
Yes Naughty Dog games are expensive, but 10 million sales after 2 years (the last official figure as of June 2022) is still fantastic. 10 million would make it Sony's 12th highest selling game of all time. But that data is almost 3 years out of date but and doesn't include the remaster, or upcoming PC release.
The Insomniac leak said it was 16 million as of 2023 which would be 3 years of sales. That would put it around #6 on the top selling PlayStation games of all time... and counting.
By comparison TLOU1 sold 17 million copies across PS4 and PS5 by April 2018 (around 4 years on sale). The last official figure was 20 million as of 2019 (5 years on sale).
Don't know how you can see either of these games as anything but a success. Not to mention winning more GOTY awards that year than any game previously.
She's brilliant in everything I've seen her in so no reason this'll be any different.
I wish her all the best. I fear many of the most abusive voices from back when the game released will see this as another opportunity to spread their hatred, instead of moving on, but we'll see.
On another note, it's so depressingly predictable to see another comment section immediately derailed by a bad faith poster.
@DennisReynolds If I had to guess I imagine that Venom was planned to be DLC but they decided to promote him to a smaller full game due to popularity and story. Probably similar to how MM was a smaller spin off from the main line series so it gave them enough room to tell a proper story for him.
I think Dever is a great actress but I don't think she's right for this role. I hope I am wrong. Either way, I feel bad for her because you know the hate that is going to be coming her way. Laura Bailey had people threatening to kill her newborn baby after TLOU 2 came out. The people who berate and threaten actors, writers, game developers, etc absolutely disgust me. It's fiction people.
I didn't watch the first season, and presumably won't watch this one either, but I did enjoy the games. Don't really see why they would choose to step away from how the character is in the games though? If it's already divisive, why invite further criticism by deviating from expectations? I want my butch Abby back! 💪
She's a phenomenal actress and I have no doubts she is going to do the character justice. Have just been watching her in "Apple Cider Vinegar" on Netflix and she is so incredibly compelling at all times.
Really glad I enjoyed the second game and that it sold so well. I hope they do something equally ambitious in the third.
