Onlookers were (rightfully) raving about the most recent gameplay video from Phantom Blade Zero, which dropped back in January. The footage showcased a crazy boss encounter with a puppeteer-like opponent.
Jaws were dropping all over the place — but the borderline unbelievable thing is that this fight is actually just... side content. In fact, everything we've seen of the game's combat so far is just side content.
No it's true, apparently. This is according to a new article from Eurogamer, in which director Liang told the outlet that everything developer S-GAME has shown up until this point is separate from Phantom Blade Zero's main story.
This begs the question: what the hell is the studio cooking up behind the curtain? If this is the kind of quality we can expect of optional stuff, then how mental are the mandatory boss battles going to be? We can't wait to find out.
But as Eurogamer alludes, it's hard not to be slightly concerned about the game's overall scope. Indeed, Phantom Blade Zero still doesn't have a release date — or even a release window — and so we're left wondering if it's actually further away than many might think.
Still, parts of the project are fully playable — there were even public demos at various events last year — and so we'd like to think that the game isn't that far off. Relatively speaking!
What do you make of this? Do you think Phantom Blade Zero can eventually live up to the hype? Break your opponent's defences and go for the kill in the comments section below.

This is why I love Chinese developers. They know how to cook. Hopefully, the main content will be even better.
Wow, thats crazy! Curious to see what the main game will be like
That’s great! I’m already enamoured by the “side content” we’ve been tasting so far. I hope they keep their cards close until around launch, many of us love being surprised by uncovering the main content for ourselves. Day one… keep cooking!
Game looks stunning.
Game looks amazing but I think we need to take the same approach as Black Myth last year, be excited but cautious and if it delivers sick. If not we know to be weary of that dev moving forward.
I'm really interested to see more, but I can tell the devs have something great they're working on.
The boss fights from the trailer looks hype and they're just side content? Dang.
@iDestinedOne I must have missed all those great Chinese games…
I'm feeling minor fatigue on Souls-likes right now but I'll be damned if this game doesn't look crazy exciting. I'm on board.
@Veritas7Ax apparently it's not a Souls-Like
@Corc11
Oh right, I totally forgot that report. I think I recall they said it has maybe a few hallmarks that look "Soulsy" but overall it leans more toward standard action I guess? But yes, you reminded me about that, I had completely forgotten that I read that.
Its awesome 👌 and I'm ready for it
Been thirsting for this one for years now, it needs to release already. Looks absolutely incredible.
Good lord, side content is all we’ve been shown boss wise? I can’t wait to see what the full product is like, and how unique the main boss fights are. In relation to Black Myth Wukong, I found that game to be fantastic and well deserved of all its accolades.
It is looking very promising. The rise of character action games is a very welcome change for the industry after the glut of souls-likes.
Sweet Jeebus. fans self
@ChrisDeku Black Myth = All Chinese games. Okay?
@Veritas7Ax As much as I enjoy games like Stellar Blade I genuinely dislike the "Soulslike" genre just because it feels like I'm playing a knock off of souls games instead of it just being their own thing.
Game LOOKS amazing, hoping it FEELS amazing to play. Often my experience with Chinese action games is the combat feels very floaty, they usually don't have the impact of something like God of War and while visually flashy don't feel as satisfying once you have seen the moves already. I haven't played much of Black Myth Wukong but the little I played felt very unresponsive.
On the other hand something like ZZZ feels truly incredible.
@ChrisDeku
I guess you have never heard of Black Myth: Wukong and Marvel Rivals.
