In December, PlayStation architect Mark Cerny essentially confirmed the PS6 when he revealed Sony would be partnering with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) on Project Amethyst. This initiative will see the two tech companies collaborate to achieve various mutually beneficial outcomes involving machine learning.
Today is apparently Radeon Day, a holiday celebrated by our PC betters. It marks the launch of AMD's futuristic Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 graphics cards. In celebration, AMD took the opportunity to hype up Project Amethyst and provide an update on its fancy new FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 tech (FSR 4), which these new cards will be capable of supporting.
FSR technology has been something of a revolution in the video game space. It allows games to be rendered at a lower resolution (to our limited technical understanding) and then uses an upscaling algorithm to enlarge each frame to your TV/monitor's native resolution, boosting performance quite considerably. FSR 4 specifically uses AI to achieve even more robust technical gains, maintaining a higher level of image quality than was previously possible.
Apparently, the collaboration with Sony has been going swimmingly. AMD proudly proclaimed that: "FSR 4 is looking fantastic! Excited for the co-development with Sony Interactive Entertainment on the models used for the FSR 4 upscaler. This is just the beginning. Stay tuned for what’s next!"
Does it seem too soon, still, to even contemplate the PS6? Have you embraced our seemingly inevitable AI upscaling future? Prepare for tomorrow in the comments section below.

Bro I just finally got a PS5. can we cool the PS6 talk for at least another year and a half or so?
Great and all but when you still have brand new releases(monster hunter), still using the greatly inferior FSR1/2 and still runs like garbage, it's kind of all for not.
So long as games improve (I'm not seeing many signs they are) I don't care if the ps2000 blows raspberrys and whistles dixie when I turn it on. We've been here before with every new console announcement and each generation gives everybody a reason to become disgruntled. @Ultimapunch don't fret bud I've had my ps5 since I was fortunate enough to bag one and I'm not jumping on the ps6 bandwagon. There is still a hell of a lot of life left in the ps5 and I don't think we've seen the best it has to show yet.
Makes you wonder if there is some truth about people saying Sony will walk away from PSSR for FSR 4 . We know MS is likely to use FSR 4. So devs would save some time and energy with the builds. Wouldn’t mind seeing Sony try and improve PSSR. But if FSR 4 is as legit as it’s supposed to be. Maybe that is the play.
Honestly I'd rather see what PSSR has to offer in 3 years. FSR has been going over 3 years and PSSR seems to have the edge and it's in its infancy. Can only imagine what it'll be like in time.
@Northern_munkey @Ultimapunch even with PS6 a few years off, which makes sense as that would be 7 years. PS5 players will still see cross gen games for a few years or longer. So just stay on PS5. Many did that with their PS4’s.
@Ultimapunch Don't worry. If the PS6 even remotely follows the trend set by the PS5, you will be playing nothing but PS4 and PS5 games on it for many years afterwards.
@Andy22385 PSSR has had its issues but it was a strong showing in its first attempt. FSR 4 seems to be really cooking right now tho. Very high praise at the moment with time to improve it. I think the consoles will likely adopt it as it’s one less cost and time to their teams. Never say never of course. But didn’t mark Cenry say he was working alongside AMD to bring idea’s to FSR? If so that could be Sony’s direction forward. Too early to say for certain tho. 😀
I'm ready for a new generation with actual games. Let's just forget this gen ever existed - the worst 5, 6 years regarding exclusives (Returnal & Astro Bot, yo!)
Yeah I can't wait to see PS6 games hampered by the inevitable PS4 versions.
@Ultimapunch To be fair, these things take years to design.
@Frmknst What do you mean? There's been loads of games!
If you mean cross-gen, get used to it, it's never going away.
Yaaay, the era of the mushy pixelated blurshow is upon us.
@Frmknst Even next gen will be full of cross gen games.
AMD should improve ray-tracing a lot, especially for consoles, because AMD is far behind Nvidia in this regard
It's interesting that they launched FSR4 (which absolutely crushes PSSR) only half a year after the release of PS5 Pro. Only on their new GPUs, though.
Ok... sometimes it just pays to say - we're just putting out a corporate press-release... just short of a paid advertisement.
Edit - isn't a bit early for this sort of pushing AMD marketting?... unless.....
For me - I think it would be very interesting if XBox announces that they've dropped AMD and taken up a contract to develop a premium nVidia box (with ALL the bells and whistles)... That could be disruptive (given that they've lost the vanilla console market-share). That and if they embrace full mobile gaming.
I just wish there was a non AMD/nVidia option out there (ignoring Intel)... or more specifically - a non-US option. Please bring on international competition.
Remember when we all used to play games for fun? I think the last ever NES game came out the same year as the PlayStation. Not Super NES.
The original NES.
@Andy22385 @HonestHick
Just to make sure you are aware.
PSSR is just FSR, with slight custom tweaks.
Playstation isn't walking away from anything.
They are collaborating with AMD.
On a Sony console its still going to be called PSSR. It's just marketing to sell the console.
FSR 4 will literally just be PSSR on ps6. Or it will be 2.0.
All PSSR is. Is a custom version of FSR. Win win for everyone.
Talking about PS6 when it barely even feels like PS5 has gotten out from PS4 era design.
@Bez87 PSSR and FSR is different tech. But yes Sony and AMD are working together on chipset’s and AI for PS6.
I can see PS6 releasing the next two years and I'mma buy because I'm a clown lol but question... Do anyone of you see PS6 doing anything crazy revolutionary?
After getting a pro last November I won’t be getting a PS6 for many years yet.
Sony need to sort out their first party output, or lack of it.
@Bez87 I didn't think PSSR had anything to do with FSR as it was developed by Sony and AMD developed FSR, it seems like it's different tech. Unless you're meaning that they're all lumped together, DLSS, FSR and PSSR as upscaling. In any case given it was itineration 1 of PSSR it's doing really well. It's taken until FSR 4.0 for it to be surpassed
Hmmmm all well and good but ill wait next time. Still waiting for that ps5 exclusive that justifies getting a playstation. Its been good replaying all the decent ones from previous generations though.
@0niguy No, tbh with you. I wish with all my heart that the PS6 will return to the days of innovation and trendsetting that Sony used to be known for, but I haven't seen much proof of that.
My gut feeling is that it will be designed around the concept of bridging the gap between console and Steam. Look at the shovelware already available on PSN. That'll get worse imo.
@Ultimapunch It was the same with PS5, PS4, PS3, Nintendo Switch 2 etc. talking about next gen at least 2 years before it launches. It's the way it is sadly.
PS6 has to release within the next two years or Nintendo will build up too much of a sizable lead with Switch 2.
@KoopaTheGamer Sony wanting an ML assisted upscaler when AMD didn't have an ML option probably helped them pull their finger out.
There has been a big change in AMD's GPU direction, and it looks like they've finally gotten onto the right course if you compare the new cards to Nvidia. They are beating the 5070/TI in many games despite being cheaper.
What if PSSR is FSR4?
@Shredz Switch 2 doesn't even have analog triggers on the controller. They aren't in a 'race' with PS at all
@0niguy
Well I'm hoping it'll be more then just a 'PS5 Pro - Pro' (or PS5 Proplus for our caffeine addicted friends) with a new front end and an HDMI2.2 connection, but I have a feeling that essentially that's what it'll be.
Day one of course!
@Dimey I disagree with Microsoft going the Sega route and becoming a publisher. The next "tenth" generation of consoles is very much PS6 vs Switch 2. Personally I'd love to see a second PS6 SKU launching alongside following on from the success of the PS Portal which was essentially an 'experiment'.
Great. I look forward to my super powerful, next gen PS6 natively rendering unoptimised games at 1440p to run at 60fps again.
Do games truly need more power behind them? I mean, loadtimes are barely a thing anymore, graphics are topnotch, development time is already at the max ... Limits create creativity, and I think the limits of PS5 aren't really explored fully yet
I wonder what new feature will be offered from PS6 machine.
I hope PS6 can play PS4, PS5 games too with Backward Compatibility.
Would like to see BC with PS1 - PS3 games in physical.
Let's just have amazing games, tech means F**k all with out them !!
People complaining about cross gen is like PC players complaining games can be played by PCs with lower specs. I don't think many PC players complain about that tho, it’s just console players being babies about something so arbitrary.
Regarding this news article, its just a small news update, don't worry the PS6 is still a long ways away.
If Sony is collaborating with AMD, does that mean that the new FSR4 incorporates elements/tech from PSSR?
I’m excited for the PS6, but I think this time I’ll wait for a (more than likely) PS6 Pro
The only device I'll consider is a portable hybrid, otherwise Sony has lost me to PC completely.
Can't wait to play the remaster of the Demons Souls remake on PS6. Day 12 baby!
@Anti-Matter 100% it will play PS4 / 5 games. I doubt they will ever look to add PS1/2/3 compatability again outside of PS+ because it's just not something the majority would care for.
I would love it, but I can't see it happening.
@themightyant Mate people were talking about Switch 2 a week after the original launched. That system had it real bad. So 4 years for PS6 talk ain't bad, and to be fair, this is a unique situation given how much of a rut this hardware has felt like
Back when PS5 Pro released some articles mentioned that Sony was collaborating with AMD in order to make ML-based upscaling possible on FSR and future RDNA tech.
Glad to see AMD basically confirmed that was indeed the case.
@0niguy (#23) not in the slightest, my bearded brother.
@Haruki_NLI It wasn't QUITE that bad with Switch I don't remember Switch chat (or Switch Pro chat) for a few years. But like PS4/XBO whose Jaguar CPUs were being criticised by devs shortly after launch. Similarly Switch's low powered tech was also drawing attention e.g. Can you imagine if BOTW actually ran at a stable 30fps, or better yet 1440p / 60fps etc.
I don't agree about the "rut this hardware has felt like" at all. PS5, and XSX, have addressed all the major weaknesses of previous gens. Slow loading... fixed. Slow CPU... fixed. It's an incredibly good bit of hardware, but we are seeing diminishing returns in terms of graphics. It's harder to wow us.
So many of you seem to not enjoy video games anymore. Maybe it’s time for a new hobby? Don’t get caught up in all this “behind the scenes” BS. Just play games and have fun. Getting caught up in devs/design/hardware, etc. will suck all the fun out of it.
@Ichiban Would you be that sarcastic if you were offered Bloodborn remaster on PS6?
@AhmadSumadi having a good moan is part of global popular culture these days (and for good reason in many cases) but you're spot on, we've never had it better as gamers despite all the changes in the industry.
@Futureshark I believe the big revolutionary acts are done. Just more power, more speed, maybe a cool gimmick or two installed lol
I really just want more games, hardware is great but remasters and remakes are getting a little stale. I'd be concerned that the push to PS6 would just mean more of the same. I never felt that way about PS3 or PS4, I only have good memories of great games. I hope we get back to that sooner than later.
@GirlVersusGame more games? My backlog is neverending! I know what you mean though. The AAA space especially is lacking new ideas. Good AA and indie games are plentiful in my opinion.
@Ultimapunch I don’t think we’ll see ps6 till 2028/2029 , they still have to plan it out though and start production
@HonestHick Maybe they will just merge. PSSR 2.0 might just be a front end for FRS 4.x.
@Shredz I would say for 80% of console gamers they two have nothing to do with each other. I am a PS gamer and I have never owned a Nintedo box nor do I have desire.
There is some small overlap for sure. However I would much rather play for example, Witcher 3 on a PS5 vs the Switch. Sure I do not get to play Mario....but I have never wanted too.
@mountain_spider Yeah i seen a few people saying Sony would likely be moving on to PSSR 2.0 by the PS6 and that is still likely the case. We don’t know yet. But no one seen FSR 4.0 actually being a DLSS competitor. So that might change some internal thoughts after testing. AMD has to be interested in AI upscaling cause their cards are weak to begin with. They can’t not have it in the PC space with how good Nvidia is. Time will tell. I get excited about next gen hardware, so i like to see the news coming. 😀
@Lindy01 never can tell in today’s tech and video game world. That’s why i check the news 3-4 times a day lol. Just never know what you’ll see. 😀
FSSR 5 is what I expect ps6 to use.. they better stay away from years old tech
@Ultimapunch no. Shouldn't be late to the party
none of this stuff makes gaming better. don't know how people can still be interested in bs marketing points about graphics when the gaming industry has been suffering as much as it has and is close to falling off a cliff. people should be clamoring for better gaming experiences and that might actually mean taking a step back and focusing more on what used to make games innovative, fun and memorable. halt the graphics arms race. look where its gotten us with the ps5 (worst console gen in playstation's history).
Here’s hoping it doesn’t cost $800 with disc drive and stand sold separately, because with the current state of the GPU market I don’t see myself playing anything but indie titles on PC for a while
@Ultimapunch Chill, mate. We enthusiasts like to talk and speculate about the future. It's exciting, but you shouldn't let it detract from your enjoyment of the present. Both sentiments can coexist. FOMO only lives inside your head.
@KoopaTheGamer The difference in TOPS between the PS5 Pro and these new GPUs is massive. That probably explains the seemingly better results with FSR4, but I would bet it shares a lot of tech with PSSR. And to be fair, it's still early days for both.
Think of it as the APUs that go into Sony's consoles: it's mostly standard AMD's PC CPU and GPU, but Sony tweaks it to get that maximum console efficiency.
The last competitive GPU architecture from AMD before the new one was RDNA2. It was heavily codeveloped with Sony to form the basis of the PS5, and I suspect this had a lot to do with its relative success.
Now, AMD suddenly turns up with another banger, and I'm inclined to believe PlayStation has had its fingers all over it once again. RDNA4 will probably form the basis of the PS6, which is in active development right now.
Kinda pointless to talk about ps6 considering it has AT LEAST another 5 years in the oven. Anything can change in that timeframe.
It saddens me that this generation and next are powered by upscaling.
I have been so disappointed this generation that I've long since decided that going forward once the PS5 is aging out that I would purchase next-gens steam deck and whatever Nintendo is working on. Even if the Bloodborne remake doesn't happen at least I'll be able to play it with 60fps on a handheld lol.
@GloriosaDaisy actually, its likely going to release by fall 2027 or 2028 at the latest. the chip design is complete and considering that this gen has already peaked, this seems probable. of course, ps5 support will continue through 2030 so i'd expect ps6 to be another disappointing cross-gen affair.
Please let this mean a ROG Ally with RDNA 4 is on the horizon. I’d love to play Monster Hunter Wilds at 60 fps in 1080p on a mobile device.
@GloriosaDaisy PS5 released in 2020, so if we go with the roughly 7 year life cycle of previous generations, we could see PS6 as early as 2027.
AMD are killing it, Intel should just quit now, it's not even close
@Andy22385 @HonestHick
Yes your both correct it is different and it is separate grom fsr for the ps5 pro.
But the basis of pssr was developed from AMDs fsr to work with AMDs chip set and components within the ps5 pro as its all AMD based.
There is a reason Sony and AMD have become partners and not rivals in this market.
They've both worked together in making the specific engine.
I expect them to work together on both fsr and future pssr versions.
Pssr will be console focused and fsr is more PC market.
They actually collaborated to make the pssr as its a dedicated software for console and not PC.
Why do you AMD and
@LifeGirl cross gens are more than fine as long as you're noticing a difference when playing the game on next gen
To be clear both FSR and DLSS increase frame rate by simply running the game at a lower resolution. It’s as simple as that and that’s what PC gamers have been doing for 30 years, it’s called the Settings menu.
Their secret sauce is then to use antialiasing to mask the quality of the lower resolution image.
Their marketing machines would like you to think it’s so much more.
It’s a strange one PSSR as there are many other upscalers including Sony owned studios with their own upscalers. Including probably the best in HFW and burning shores on the Pro.
Then of course you have FSR with AMD.
I really don’t know Sony bothered with PSSR but there be some business reason for it.
Maybe trials using FSR on the Pro were not that good and Sony wanted their own in PSSR, then again they could have just taken the HFW burning shores upscaler and used that.
Strange affair really.
theory @Bez87 AMD is killing it right now. I just wish they would compete in the higher end market more to keep the Nvida pricing in line. Let this be an example for all the hardcore PS fanboys that i see on here constantly saying they wish the Xbox would go away. To them i say careful what you wish for. Sony will do what Nvida does and thats name their price. This isn’t a conspiracy theory it’s happen right now in our industry. When everything goes to cloud and PC then it won’t matter as much. But for now we need balance.
As for PSSR, it’s been a up and down thing depending on the game. But the PS5 Pro is a good starting point for it and they can continue to update it going forward. I expect PS6 and the next Xbox to lean into AI a lot. For console it really makes sense. For PC i would like to see more card power and less AI software doing the lifting. I am a console player since Super NES, and a diehard Apple computer user of almost 18 years now and i am thinking about going PC. But the build i want right now is around $5k thats a good amount of money to have AI doing the heavy lifting in my opinion. On console for sure it makes sense cause they have to build them within a budget.
So what about Sonys own up scaling AI tech then? In the PS5 Pro, or are we to now assume that will be scrapped for AMD’s new solution.
Mark Cerny said fsr 4.0 will work for ps5 pro current pssr architecture so i dunno where amd got that ps6 rumor from. Everyone knows ps6 aint coming out til 2027
