We couldn't quite believe it when it was first announced, and now we finally get to see it in action: this is Cristiano Ronaldo in upcoming PS5 and PS4 brawler Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.
Let's not sugarcoat it: this is a baffling inclusion. Fighting game guest characters are obviously nothing new, but adding in a still-active footballing icon to a Fatal Fury roster? It's mental.
To be fair, we suppose it works both ways: if you're a big CR7 fan, you get to play as him — and if you can't stand the Portuguese striker, then you get to beat him up. Win-win!
As you'd probably expect, Ronaldo uses his ball-kicking prowess to batter his opponents. Oh, and he's even got his 'Siu!' celebration when he lands a KO. Of course.
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is still set to release in just under a month, on the 24th April. We're dying to see whether Ronaldo ends up being top tier; imagine if it's all just Ronaldo mirror matches in the Evo 2025 finals.

While it is a mental inclusion it does make sense in that SNK is owned by the Saudi public investment fund and Ronaldo is playing there.
@AdamNovice Yep ronaldo is extremely pally pally with the Saudis. Besides him playing there, he's at all the events they host. Boxing, gigs etc.

Its a terrible idea but the advert and gameplay werent terrible. Could have been horrendous. And i’m a football fan with an intense dislike for Ronaldos preening… and that shocking goal celebration. Wish i was good at Fighting games so i could give him a virtual slap.

Honestly this feels like a crossover we would've seen back in the early 2000's, since back then we had so many random and goofy crossovers lol.
Lol this is ridiculous. BUT. If i look at this from marketing view, this is actually a pretty good idea.
Fatal Fury clearly doesn't have the brand power and popularity like Street Fighter, Tekken, or Mortal Kombat. So in order to give it a big spotlight and introduce it towards non-fighting games audiences, SNK needs to do something drastic.
They already did the first step by working together with Capcom and the result was Terry and Mai as a guest character in SF 6, which pretty historic event since mainline SF games never have guest characters from outside Capcom games. But to help SNK, Capcom break the tradition. Although SNK did the same with Ken and Chun Li as guest character in CotW.
The second step is include the game in a tournament with big prize money. Fatal Fury CotW is included at this year Esport World Cup / EWC at Riyadh and the prize pool for CotW is possibly 1 million USD with the 1st winner possibly get 300K USD. That's a life changing money and i bet it will attract a lot of people to play CotW.
The third and possibly final step is this one, make CR7 as a guest fighter. I'm sure some Fatal Fury fans will get angry and ask why, why not this or that character. I'm also felt the same way when Capcom added Terry and Mai for SF 6. But again, SNK needs this game to do well or better than KoF 15 and Samurai Shodown.
And for the note, SF 6 really blew up in Japan among casual audiences and one of the biggest reason is when V-tubers started playing the game and participate in a tournament. Crazy Raccoon Cup, a team tournament mixed of pro players and V-tubers, garnered big audiences and also attract people to watch SF 6 tournaments but also plays the game. So Ronaldo pretty much works like V-tubers although he's playable in the game.

SNK's master ploy to get people into City of the Wolves is the wackiest but honestly coolest inclusions ever. They didn't have to make him a character, let alone a base roster character, but they did it and he looks pretty cool to play as well. Hopefully this will help Fatal Fury so much.
@arsmolinarc He's actually on the base roster, and the first season of DLC is free with the game so really he's just another character you get to play in the game as a part of the base package.
@dskatter Probably. I'm not a football fan but he's uncontested as one of the all time greatest players in the most popular sport in the world. He's definitely a household name around the world. Why he's in a Japanese fighting game is a different question though. 😅

My opinion, if the gameplay is good I'm not hugely against it but it's not a franchise or even genre I'm into and I've probably had my expectations eroded by Call of Duty
So, I'd prefer it didn't exist but mostly don't see the harm.
