With development cycles so long these days, and the PS5 generation already way beyond its half-way point, it’s perhaps not a surprise to see developers beginning to think about next-generation consoles like the PS6.
It’s certainly something that’s on the mind of UK studio Rocksteady, as a new job listing for a Senior Core Engine Programmer explicitly mentions that candidates will “enable the team to deliver the highest quality game experience on our target hardware, including high-end PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the next-generation of consoles”.
The project, which is expected to be a new single player Batman campaign, will use Unreal Engine 5, as there are various references to Epic’s technology throughout the job listing.
As was the case with the current generation, we’d expect a long cross-gen period once the PS6 releases, so it’s not really surprising to learn that this project will target both the PS5 and next-gen systems.
It’s going to be interesting to see how consumers feel about that, though. Some complain they still don’t think the PS5 has delivered enough value, as many of its biggest games can either be played on the PS4 or PC.
Either way, it’s fascinating to see job listings slowly starting to openly reference next-gen hardware. With the PS6 potentially due out in 2028, and games taking at least three to four years to make, we’re sure this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Developers are only as good as their last game, so Rocksteady has a lot to prove with this one.
@wildcat_kickz Yup, a lot of good will got burnt with SS:KTJL.
If the Suicide Squad development is any indication it might even end up being cross gen for PS7.
PS6 is ho hum, let me know when they start developing for PS6 Pro. 😂
"including high-end PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the next-generation of consoles”.
If ever you were looking for proof of crossgen being here to stay.
GTA 7 is targetting the PS9 Pro
@TheArt yeah the concept of generations is now a thing of the past and with the likes of Switch 2 just coming to market along with the influx of PC handhelds, I feel PS5 will be supported well into the distant future alongside any PS6
Rocksteady is definitely making a new batman game.its going to be fun.and they get back at making single player video games again.word up son
"next-generation consoles like the PS6"
and all the other ones
@Absymbel I mean, it's up for debate whether Microsoft's rumoured thing even is going to be a console, to be fair.
We are so not ready for PS6 talk. Give me my PS5 games first!!
Honestly I always got stuck on their Batman games without YouTube I would never finished any of them 😂.
Long development cycles is probably one of the reasons devs keep trying to get into live service besides the obvious. Hoyo and Kuro have proved that it can be successful if done right.
I wouldn't mind a new single player Batman game in an open world Gotham sandbox with new story arcs and villains every few months.
With the multitude of DC and Marvel characters out there I'm surprised they haven't done this yet. Those franchises have "Gacha" written all over them.
Some of the stiffs on here pouring scorn on rocksteady for one bad game. They've nailed most of their previous stuff, wouldn't be writing them off, I'd have my money on any new Batman game being a return to form.
We realistically only have about two years left until first ps6 spots in the wild, so it makes sense.
I got faith, RS must know it all depends on this next game else it'll shutter it's doors.
Plus, I'm always excited for a batman game.
I'd happily take a 60FPS patch for the existing Batman games on PS5.
We’re coming upon the 5 year anniversary for PS5 later this year, but it really doesn’t feel like it’s been that long. The pandemic really messed with time perception in general, but beyond that it really protracted the roll out of the generation. It actually feels like it’s just hitting its stride now. I’d prefer to get 3-4 more years out of ol’ console.
I think I've only played two PS5 games this entire generation that were actual current gen only games.
@TheArt So long as they remain the same architecture console generations are now just going to be like PC low/medium/high settings now. In this case PS5 will be low, PS5 Pro Medium, PS6 High.
Not quite that literal of course, but yeah, far easier for devs to scale these games to the different consoles now they're the same architecture from one to the other. A far cry from a dev deciding whether to also create a PS3 CELL version of their new PS4 title.
Not surprising. PS5 released in 2020, so I expect PS6 to release in 2027 or 2028 at the latest.
The Xbox series S part is the scariest part. That console (from a GPU/RAM point of view) is slightly more powerful than PS4 Pro, which essentially means any game targeting that console could be released on a last gen console with minimal sacrifices (unless it requires fast data fetches or high CPU load). I hope Microsoft lets the series x and s launch parity abomination die.
Ok cool. Gotham knights was a uniquely bad beast that actually forced 30fps on you this gen. If it wasn’t universally panned enough and yet I still played through it, because it was still effectively an offshoot of the rocksteady games and still put you in that same Gotham world
Confirmation that I won’t need to buy a PS6 until the eventual Pro edition, since the next generation will probably be like this one and spill over big time!
I’d like to see Rocksteady continue the story that was hinted at the end of Arkham Knight, but they really will have to take great care with how the build any game. Just go with what made the Arkham games popular and refrain from making too many changes to established characters They need a massive win after Suicide Squad, so hopefully that factors out in their next game.
Gonna be a PS5 Pro game that also releases on the PS6 with slight improvements. Just a nice-to-have if you got the income.
It's wrong to say there have not been lots of good games this generation. There have been many.
That said, I think it's true to say there have been fewer great games than last gen, and there are undoubtedly a lot of missing classics that never got made.
A good DC game being one of them, with two entirely unnecessary flops released instead. Massive failings by the Suits, with the little guys at the coal face paying the price with their jobs.
We are left in a situation where I question if developers can pivot and build the great games we should have had.
Too many teams destroyed. To much talent lost, fragmented and working elsewhere.
The graphical improvement in generations is so minor these days the PS5 may as well hang around until 2030-35 when some kind of meaningful improvement can be shown.
With Covid and long dev cycles I’m one of those that feels like this generation hasn’t even properly kicked off yet…
I have faith. I suspect games like suicide saquad and redfall were flops on purpose because the devs did not want to make a live service game but were forced to.
It’s wild to think that it’s past the midway point this gen and I only have 3 games that are current gen only not cross with ps4.
Absolutely not interested. Announced suicide squad the same way for ps5 and look at that. This generation has been bad - so many on ps4 and the pro isn’t even that much of a needed improvement. Roll on the switch 2 this week
WB will probably cancel it.
The guys who did the Batman Arkham trilogy have lost gone I doubt they would even get anywhere near those brillebt games after SS
The sooner ai cuts down these development times the better
That's why ps5 pro is a no go, either go with ps6 or PC. I'm leaning pc
