Sadistic vampire spawn, Astarion, one of Baldur's Gate 3's breakout original characters, has officially been accepted into Dungeons & Dragons' established, ongoing canonical universe, the first to do so. Having previously been included in the corner of a sketch in the 2024 edition of Wizards of the Coast's D&D Player's Handbook as something of an easter egg, the bloodthirsty companion/potential protagonist now has an official quote in the 2025 Monster Manual.
GamesRadar+ spotted a quote attributed to Astarion on the page pertaining to vampire spawn: "Darling, you are simply delicious..." Considering the swathe of incredibly compelling, fully realised characters developer Larian Studios dreamed up for BG3, we wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of Lae'Zel, Karlach, or Shadowheart formally becoming part of D&D's sprawling, decades-spanning canon universe.
Are you glad to see the tragic, tortured character of Astarion getting the kind of mainstream success he deserves? Are you surprised that the fan-favourite Shadowheart didn't beat him to the punch? Suffer an eternity of servitude in the comments section below.

This was the greatest game I have ever had the pleasure to experience and it would be the icing on the cake if these characters, who I have genuinely grown to really like, could make their way across to D&D proper.
Love it! My DM has already woven Shadowheart, Karlach and Gale into our 5+ years ongoing 5e game as cameo NPCs, so good to see them recognised as official canon. Testament to how well realised they are.
That's an impressive accomplishment, cheers to whoever actually had the original idea of Astarion!
