With the rate at which AAA developers are canceling video game projects, we might all need to content ourselves with our backlogs in future. Respawn Entertainment, a subsidiary of EA and the developers of Titanfall and Apex Legends, has canceled its unannounced "multiplayer first-person shooter experience".
The news comes to us via a since-deleted post on LinkedIn (thanks, Dexerto), in which Emilee Evans, former Executive Assistant and Production Coordinator at Respawn, revealed: "The unannounced incubation project I was a part of for the past year was canceled this week."
It's another unfortunate blow for fans of the developer. While Apex Legends remains an ongoing way to experience the studio's signature style of FPS gameplay, it doesn't seem like we will be seeing anything new from the studio for some time. Almost a year ago to the day, EA laid off over 700 employees, a move which similarly resulted in the cancellation of that cool-sounding Mandalorian game, a single-player shooter set in the Star Wars universe.
What do you think, are we going to see a return to the bad old days, when a major video game each month was something of a rarity? Or, is that precisely what the industry needs, giving it time to heal? Let us know in the comments section below.

If it was anything titanfall related then it’s absolutely disappointing
@anon_pel222 I did hear they were making a Star Wars FPS game iirc.
A damn shame. Titanfall 2 was one of the best shooters I’ve ever played, but Apex just isn’t for me. Would love to see another Titanfall game, or another single player game.
Titanfall 2 still has a very strong online presence considering how long its been out. Its a bona fide classic and its a shame that its another title along with the likes of socom, motorstorm, resistance, syphon filter etc, etc, etc that have been pushed to one side to pursue that golden goose of profit that is live service but there is only one "goose" that's laying eggs and that's fortnite. Titanfall needs another chapter because it's just superb in every way.
@Northern_munkey i played a 1000 hours of TitanFall on Xbox One and outside of my Gears of War Multiplayer obsession, and of course early days Halo and COD. I thought it was one of the best online shooters ever made. I had that much fun with TitanFall. I miss it and am really ashamed more players didn’t jump in. But it’s hard to compete now with Fortnite and COD. I am keeping my eye on Battlefield 6 as i would love to dive into it next year.
EA killed Respawn the moment they forced Titanfall 2’s release between COD and Battlefield.
Despite Titanfall 2 being significantly better than both that year.
titanfall 2 was alright. excellent gameplay/gunplay and all, but it’s pretty boring. i play it every blue moon for about a match or two on PC, the mechs can be fun , but overall it’s not as interesting as other shooters. respawn should try something different since they cancelled whatever fps they were working on. it’s so many fps games on the market it’s insane, even a new fps called fragpunk just dropped a day or so ago
It says it was a "Multiplayer Shooter" so MEH. I just want either another TitanFall Campaign (still haven't beaten TitanFall 2 actually so still have that, got the MP and Training Top 3 Trophies out of the way already so there's that 👍) or Star Wars Jedi 3 (really enjoyed playing/platinuning those games back to back about a year ago)
Titanfall 2 is the best Hollywood Blockbuster CoD type fps campaign I’ve ever played. Unfortunately bungled by the publisher who released it at the wrong time, and daft gamers who purchase games like sheep.
Whilst we’ve had good games, I still consider this to be the wasted generation, with a dozen top studios wasted producing cancelled games or epic flops, and many being shut down entirely.
How many billions have been spent on clown world multiplayer games that never saw the light of day, or were converted into single player titles that flopped hard?
Or in the case of Concorde just released as-is and flopped harder.
I’m currently playing Avowed and that game deserves far more praise and less hate. Of all the games that had to pivot from GAAS, it’s a master class in damage limitation.
@nomither6 "titanfall 2 was alright. excellent gameplay/gunplay and all, but it’s pretty boring." Wash your mouth out with soap heretic...
@anoyonmus that was cancelled last year. Respawn gonna be stuck making Star Wars games for the foreseeable future IMO
@ProfessorNiggle That's not true. EA wants to steer away from making licensed IP titles. CEO of EA said it himself. That's probably the reason why they canned Mandalorian FPS last year. They are basically in process of completing stuff they are making now (Black Panther, Iron Man, third SW Jedi game) and they are off to making their own stuff.
@Godot25 hopefully! But Respawn alone got the 3rd Jedi game and a Star Wars strategy game in development. Maybe that's what was cancelled but for now I guess it's Star Wars for them.
@ProfessorNiggle Yup. Third Jedi game, Black Panther and Iron Man. That RTS is developed by external dev and was probably too far in development to cancel it.
Main point is that EA don't want to make licensed games anymore.
I think they are restructuring to go all in on Apex Legends 2.0. I've no idea what that will look like but hopefully they've learned by Overwatch 2's mistakes by now.
@Godot25 ah the RTS is a partnership. Gotcha! Well, hopefully next gen, Respawn can bring a Titanfall sequel that actually sells well
Give us a titanfall titanfall 2 is one of the best video games ever made. Word up son
One of the elements of Titanfall multiplayer that I adored that doesn't get a lot of attention is how it made you feel a part of a bigger conflict by integrating NPC combatants into the battlefield. I wish more shooters did that.
My dream game would be something like Battleborn (I know!), but made by a team like Respawn who had slightly better shooting and movement mechanics. I think they'd rock the hell out of an FPS MOBA, which some of TF's modes felt somewhat akin to.
Have players in a heated battle, real and AI combatants all over, pushing back and forth, capturing objectives (of various degrees)... then once a certain power level was reached, they could call in big game-changing elements like vehicles or Titans.
In-match, players would accrue upgrades unto themselves and their team that could shift the tides back and forth. Really recreate that sense of a skirmish on the front lines being fought tooth and nail.
It'd be like a MOBA mixed with a roguelike mixed with an FPS or something... I dunno. Dream game right there.
@anoyonmus wasn't that cancelled awhile ago though? They've had a lot of things baking at one time or another but always cancel them and continue to milk Apex.
Definitely wasnt titanfall because thats a third person shooter
