Sony has a completely new God of War PS5 game up its sleeve that sees Kratos return to Greece, and it's releasing later this year, new claims suggest. As the franchise's 20th-anniversary (22nd March) comes and goes with just God of War Ragnarok armour and skins, a tribute video, and merch, Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb has fuelled more speculation around the series.
In a series of Bluesky posts, he states there's "still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it's not a remaster collection. It's a new side-story project." When someone questions the scope of the project in relation to the mainline entries, Grubb says to "set your expectations lower". This suggests it could be a title of similar size to Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Grubb was one of the sources suggesting a remastered collection of the original God of War games might be confirmed around the time of the series' 20th anniversary — so this weekend — but he's now stated he "was never told about a remaster collection".
Instead, he reached out to "a source about the rumours (that I saw were focused on a collection) and they told me that nothing God of War would happen at the State of Play but something could show up at the anniversary".
These new claims line up with suggestions made by Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming earlier in the year, who said the rumoured game would star a younger Kratos. This project is supposedly separate from the one that was recently cancelled by Sony, which was a live-service take from Demon's Souls developer Bluepoint Games.

Yes I am. Maybe the collection of remasters would be revealed in June.
Probably a DLC for Ragnarok or a Miles Morales type game. It could be interesting, actually.
@Scottdevine53 And If it's not?
Always excited for more Kratos! Even loved him in Hot Shots Golf: Out Of Bounds.
mehhh give us a Naughty Bear remaster instead
@Areus if it's not, Maybe Christmas.
Wasn't he the dude that started the remaster games ?
Alright, that sounds cool as well! But i’m not listening to these rumours anymore, i’ll just wait and see what they’ll announce.
Honestly, a remake of the original would still be dope! Or at least put the PS2 versions on PS+, i just want to play those games again
More rumours again 1st about a god of war collection and the most recent one about an elders scroll oblivion remake now this I won't hold my breath I hope I'm wrong though obviously till anythings officially announced I'll take theyse with a pinch of salt
I liked the idea of somehow taking Kratos to a third mythological setting like Egyptian or Japanese mythology rather than returning to a game set in Greek culture.
Fortunately we are past the over-saturation of the Greek setting that we were in for a while. I reckon it won’t be as tired as it was getting several years ago, but give us some new ancient gods for him to take on. Black Myth Wu Kong beat them to the punch on Chinese myth, but surely there’s other legends to explore
I'd take a smaller god of war side project Inbetween the next mainline game. I think a 2d combat focused metroidvania that's closer in it's roots to the original gow Greece games could be brilliant.
I've long since championed for other Sony studios to be working on smaller titles from existing IP, smaller titles to fill gaps that take maybe 2 years to do rather than the new standard 5 year cycle that they could even use to bolster the ps+ extra lineups as day 1 offerings would fit perfectly
I don't know what else they can squeeze out of Greek mythology for kratos to kill. Maybe Apollo?
Here we go grubb again, pass the salt round im needing a pinch of it.
@Bluemoon2008 wanted a gow Metroidvania for so long. Would be awesome.
When was the last time Grubb was actually right about any Sony related leak that was not an obvious SOP date.
No offense but I have zero trust in him. He is the reason so many Santa Monica devs are getting harassed on Twitter right now.
I’d love a side project that went back to the old style of God of War. Still prefer those games to the newer ones.
I'm always up for more God of War, but, has Jeff Grubb been right about anything? I swear this guy just say stuff to trend on Twitter for a minute.
prequel didn't work so well with Accension
If is not a complete remake what else is left breathing in Greece? They would have to deploy some excellent writing to get out of the hole they made.
@trev666 still better than the new ones imo.
Well if grubb says it's a thing then it must be 🙄
Of course it's a side project, we can't have ps2 and psp remaster in this current year climate, it will be "hr approved" god of war like ragnarok I guess, lol.
Lego God Of War, you heard here first.
All these leaks, claims, rumors etc.... just sucks the excitement out of official announcements and creates expectations for nothing 🙄 Borders on trolling at this point.
@breakneck "No offense but I have zero trust in him. He is the reason so many Santa Monica devs are getting harassed on Twitter right now."
And sites like this, PushSquare, that pass on his ramblings just like he is ever right about anything Playstation. They are just as much to blame to be honest.
@Residentsteven I think the last two god of war games are some of the finest games ever made.
It's a top down roguelite similar to Hades, but with Greek mythology.
Oh wait, that's just Hades.
Sounds like a stretch after the sop and anniversary but we'll see.
@Zeke68 Exactly. I’m glad someone had the balls to say it like it is 👏
@trev666 I wish I could say the same it’s just to different for me. All the menu screens the camera, every time I think I will give it one more try I just end up hating it even more.
We already had Ascension and it was pathetic.
I want it to be a PS VR2 spin-off!
I'm not holding my breath
Hope it's more...interesting than Ragnarok.
I really enjoyed 2018 but SOMETHING about its sequel just lost me around 10 or so hours in - probably less. Might be the lack of puzzles/how mind numbingly boring the exploration part of it is with combat just...being the same for the most part.
THe biggest question is will we have Daddy Kratos or the real Kratos?
While the last 2 games had undeniable production values that brought some quality to them, I despise what they've done with the character.
Bring back the vengeful, the shell of a man destroyed by his greed and anger, Kratos, he was always more interesting than the grubby old man having issues managing fatherhood.
For the love of christ, please stop quoting Jeff Grubb. I could have "insider knowledge" if he's anything to go by.
On topic though, I duno why but a Metrovaina style GOW going through all the Greece boss fights has been on my mind for a while.
well, if this fraud keeps guessing he'll be right eventually I suppose.
@Olmaz you despise that they turned him from extremely boring and annoying to an actual person? I love the original GOW games but definitely not for Kratos as a character
Its ridiculous and pathetic that they didnt release the first2 games as ps2 Ports AT LEAST to celebrate the 20th anniversary
Probably more dlc for Ragnarok, I certainly won't build my hopes for anything to special. If this is a thing, no doubt it won't go back to the original GOW style games. Personally don't like the new games, combat isn't as satisfying, don't like the camera either.
As is so often the case, a 'leaker' attempts to weasel themselves out of a disproven rumour that they helped to spread. Of course, had the rumour been correct, they would have gladly basked in the glory of having been proven right, using it to show that they have a proven track-record, when the truth is that all they did was make an educated guess in the first place.
Way too much credence given to some of these 'leakers', and their missteps usually are far too often forgotten...
Jeff Grubby. Enough said 🤣
Or, ya know, you coulda have ported the greek games to PS4/PS5, released them on Plus too.
Shocker Grubb back peddling when called out.
Can’t wait to play it on the ps7
Lol no. I'm not biting on rumors.
Official announcement or at least a shred of evidence. An I heard that he said is not gonna cut it.
I'm disappointed in PS for posting this. After the nonsense of his remaster rumours that has been giving Santa Monica grief for weeks, you're now giving him more exposure.
Removed - offensive remarks
Blue sky....says it all. Christ knows what moral grandstanding they've got in store for us...of course it's Greece! They've got to have Kratos drowning in guilt for eternity....Today's GOW writers are incapable of thinking up anything for him except "He was bad! Now he's good! Did you hear? He was a BAD MALE! But he's good now!"
I'm glad we have the old games. I hope they leave them tf alone. I fed my son while playing the first. I only had that and GTA. Means a lot to me.
@SuperSilverback The idea that OG Kratos is boring and one dimensional is so baffling to me.
He's a tragic character, destroyed by his greed and then his insatiable anger. He faces insurmontable odds, and is ready to risk it all and to sacrifice the world to get his revenge.
More importantly, the gameplay of the games are completely in phase with the character, asking the player to become this indomitable brute. The end of GOW3 is simply a masterpiece, when you as the player have to realise, as does Kratos, that everything you suffered through was your own doing and that you could stop anytime.
As for Daddy Kratos, he's a very predictable character who faces issues with a kid becoming a teenager. Nothing in the gameplay really helps us bind both character together, except for those long boatrides that replaces cutscenes. Yes, there is a redemption arc somewhere, but it's so stereotypical and, again, predictable that it doesn't really elevate the character.
I get why some would prefer the second character to the first, but I don't. And I'd have prefered if they hadn't used a character I loved to change it into something I really don't like.
@Olmaz fair enough pal, everyone has their preference. For me the only times I enjoyed the OG Kratos Character was his scenes with Pandora, Calliope and Deimos.
@Th3solution well as stated in the article it's a side project and not a mainline entry, so we might yet get news of a mainline in those eras, but wouldn't expect an announcement for it, for at least another year or so,
If Grubb just goes ahead and says:
"You can expect an egyptian, greek, norse, remake, remaster, sequel and prequel in the next 10 years", he can just cover all his bases at once, rather than having to retroactively correct his lies every few weeks.
i would be shocked if gow is getting a standalone "expansion" the likes of miles morales or uncharted 4: the lost legacy. that's nothing to lower your expectations for because who in the world expected anything better than that? i would argue that a barebones remstered collection is very uneventful considering gow 3 is already available on ps4 and gow 1/2 would only be ported from the ps3 release. so who cares about the collection... is it that hard to pull out your ps3? oh, right, the majority of gamers cannot stand their old hardware and throw it away the moment a new console launches haha
