The Minecraft movie has shattered all expectations, breaking Box Office records with a staggering $301 million worldwide opening.
The adaptation, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, was generally panned by critics for lacking the creativity of its source material – but after a series of clips went viral, the release has been roundly applauded on by rowdy teenagers.
The film is already the second biggest release of the year, and is on track to overtake current frontrunner Captain America: Brave New World in a matter of days. The Marvel effort has managed $410 million in its eight weeks at theatres.
The movie’s $157 million debut in North America makes it bigger than Super Mario Bros, and it’s not far behind internationally either. Fascinatingly, the momentum it now has heading into the Easter weekend could give it a second wind.
We’ve seen dozens of videos on social media of American theatres erupting at various lines from the film, so don’t expect this one to slow down.
With just $150 million spent on the film’s budget, it looks like distributor Warner Bros has struck solid gold.

Seems like hardcore gamers bashing this movie weren't the target audience. Glad to see it doing well. I heard it made many kids happy.
I took my 2 kids to see it Friday, they enjoyed it thoroughly, as did every other child in there. It's a solid 6/10 family movie as far as I'm concerned.
The cheers and applause at certain moments did confuse me.
I am 47 mind you, so not the target demographic.
It just needed to be a solid family movie to do well financially. Not everything needs to have "Barbie" levels of creativity
We saw it Friday and it’s one of the only films I saw which got a clap at the end. We certainly laughed at some bits but amazing considering there is almost zero story. Basically it may as well be called “thank god for jack black otherwise this movie would be rubbish” or “the jack black Minecraft movie” - he basically made the film!
Took my kid to see this on Saturday, he's only little but we taught him from a young age cinema etiquette so he's really good when we go.
Anyway had a bunch of teenagers sat behind us clapping every time a name was said and generally being idiots the whole way through.
To be honest, if I were a kid I'd probably do the same if I were with my mates but that crap was really annoying after a while, even my kid got fed up with it. I did tell them to knock it off and all but one of them did, until the end where they all clapped again, as a sign of defiance. I said they were a bunch of idiots to them and walked off, but I get it, got to keep up appearances when you're a kid.
@Yusuo that's the problem with cinemas other people are there.
Even though I play Minecraft a lot (as an adult) I am waiting for this to hit a streaming service.
Sounds like the actual movie is one of those you watch, maybe smile & laugh a little and walk away feeling a little lighter in mood for a short while.
Another example of critical scores being way way off. The general public seem to really enjoy the film. The film looks fun and I’m not the target audience. I would imagine kids would love the system of the movie.
The film looks atrocious, but In a way I'm glad it's doing well more for cinemas in general; it's been a quiet few weeks and this has injected some much needed interest. I'm always worried that my local chain will close down but films like this basically keep them open.
Not a fan of Minecraft and the movie clearly not for me.
But last time i go to a movie theatre was last year for Alien Romulus which was great. This year however i'm not yet go even once...but it could change for Superman, Predator Badlands, MI Final Reckoning, and Ballerina.
Just want to point out it's not called
"The Minecraft Movie"
It's called
"A Minecraft Movie"
So expect a huge number of Minecraft movie sequels/franchise (not a surprise), especially as it's doing rather well at the cinema.
Going to see it on Friday with my daughter, I hope it’s better than Dog Man 🤞🏻
Its wonderful to wander around the house driving your dear wife to the point of utter madness by endlessly quoting Black's "I...AM STEVE"
Jack in the box office. He can now spend more at a Jack in the Box!
It truly is awful and like I said I almost walked out early. It's aimed at children not adults but there are few family friendly theatrical releases that already have such a well known franchise behind it. The box office always responds strongly to movies geared towards younger children especially coming up to Summer. It's a slot many major studios aim for.
I have thousands of hours in the game, all non story and all creative mode. It's a big part of why I got so interested in real world architecture, it really helped develop that spark. It's an absolutely massive property and a teaching tool. The critics slammed it because they did see it and they didn't like it, which happens and I felt the same way. If I had children I'd go again and bring them, I might not personally enjoy it but it's one of those small sacrifices parents make everyday.
It's doing well in the box office because the price of admission doesn't equal the overall experience. You don't get your money back if you thought the movie wasn't good. It got green-lit for a theatrical release because they knew it would sell.
Hollywood isn't trying to appeal to children anymore, it's no longer a theatrical demographic for the major studios. It's much cheaper to develop and release through streaming but Minecraft was always going to be the exception. Someone else mentioned the term FOMO recently, that's exactly what Minecraft is banking on and they already pulled it off. Six friends brought their children to it over the weekend and they said the theater was jam packed. It's not something I'd fault WB for, it's the business of the industry and they know how to play the game.
The world is a very unbalanced awkward place right now, it's not a negative movie and it does try to deliver a couple of laughs. For that alone it will do well, people looking for positivity will gravitate towards it regardless of quality. It might be bad (it really is) but it made me forget about a lot of the real world nonsense for a couple of hours which in-itself is a job well done.
@Futureshark I think the opening sentence would read really weirdly for most people if I used the actual name, though, but I get your point and you're of course absolutely right.
@PuppetMaster Alien Romulus was amazing on the big screen, it almost felt like a time-machine. They captured so much of the classic feel that they ended up releasing it on VHS, which sold out in minutes.. Did you know they are releasing an Aliens TV series on Hulu/FX this Summer? Ridley Scott is producing. Hulu did a great job with Predator: Prey, it absolutely surpassed peoples expectations. I've watched it a couple of times now.
@GirlVersusGame Yes i've seen Alien: Earth trailer. It's on my watching list.
And i really like Predator: Prey which is the reason why i'm excited for Predator: Badlands because it's directed by the same guy. I think for this year Alien and Predator fans will have a good time 🤩
So, Will Ferrell in The Roblox Movie next year?
@PuppetMaster Now all we need is a new Predator game, maybe from the same Devs who made Rogue City. I'd love to see Predator 2 made into a game, the jungle was great but they could use the Colombian/Jamaican factions and and urban setting to really add more depth. A Predator game in the style of Prey could be great too, the primitive style weaponry could really work.
A Native friend who worked on Prey said it was one of the best experiences of their life, they gathered up a strong Native crew to be true to the source material/tribal history and were really careful to do it right. I wish it did have a theatrical release, it's passed a lot of people by and deserves so much more recognition. That's one of the faults of streaming, they can lock-in some great content but unless you have service (or use other methods) you miss out.
@Boxmonkey I see what you're saying but this isn't true.
The film is bad, and critics are correct to review it this way. However, people often like bad movies.
Wow $310M in a weekend is insane.
Will likely pass 1 Bill within a few weeks. A sequel is a certainty
Of course it was going to do well as the target audience in Kids adore Minecraft. It was never aimed at adults.
Terrible movie will be always terrible no matter how popular they are.
I never like Minecraft.
Awful games, awful graphic design, terrible gameplay.
Kids nowadays really have bad taste in understanding beautiful aesthetic.
I just lost my mind to look at peoples really enjoy that awful stuffs like Minecraft.
That's why the better looking stuffs rarely got appreciated because of popularity of awful stuffs that get popularized by awful taste peoples. And this situation made the underrated great stuffs never get appreciated.
I choose to play something better with Minecraft style but with way much better graphic and gameplay like Portal Knights and Dragon Quest Builders games.
Aesthetically beautiful, great gameplay.
I expected to hate this when I brought my son to see it, but it was actually pretty fun.
People actually paid to go see a crap movie? That's crazy.
