Update []: Naughty Dog has promptly released a patch for The Last of Us 2 to resolve previously reported problems with the game's big v2.0 update.
Players reported severe issues, like losing character upgrades and unlocks. The patch notes point out:
- Restores campaign unlockables, such as additional weapon holsters and skill points, which had previously been lost after continuing progress from a save created prior to Patch 2.0.0
There is a catch, though: you'll need to use a save created prior to the 3rd April update to restore unlockables, otherwise you may never get them back.
The developer is now investigating lost unlockables in its roguelike mode, No Return.
Original Story: Naughty Dog deployed update 2.0 for the PS5 version of The Last of Us 2 Remastered earlier today to coincide with the PC port's release, but if you still have the option to, you might be better off cancelling the download for now.
PS5 players in the middle of a playthrough of the game are reporting in their droves that patch 2.0 has broken all of the character upgrades they've unlocked so far, removing them altogether. Depending on where you are in the game, this could leave either Ellie or Abby with no enhancements and no additional holsters to quickly equip other weapons from.
This would, of course, make progressing through the game significantly more difficult. And since you'll have spent any Supplements you already had on those upgrades, you won't be able to easily get the skills you need back after the patch.
The franchise's Reddit page has many players complaining of the unintended glitch, and lots of others are responding to Naughty Dog's tweet confirming the update is live.
The patch is intended to add two new playable characters in Bill and Marlene to the run-based No Return mode, along with four new maps, additional Trophies, and a fresh jacket for Ellie inspired by Naughty Dog's next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. For now, though, it sounds like it's best to steer clear.

Can’t be burned by this patch if you haven’t paid the upgrade tax to have it!
Thank you for reporting on this issue. It happened to me and I hope articles like this one can save others from it. Incredibly frustrating that they didn't find this in the testing stage. Thankfully, I have the game on disc. I ended up deleting my game and save file from my console storage then downloading an older manual save from the cloud. I then reinstalled from my disc with my network off. I also turned off auto update. What a pain!
This gen for ND has been rough. Once the pinnacle of game development. I'd call the studio a long running joke atm due to the non existent ps5 generation unless its bad press. It's a shame but damn.
Literally one person liked and agreed?
Yup, once the darlings of the industry, now laughable. Sad times.
@Shwing I look forward to the “return to form” for Naughty Dog that’s surely on approach. Surely!
I hope so, I really do.

Lol it's just funny reading the negative comments over a simple glitch that can be fixed.
But hey, i guess some people must fill up their quota of exaggerated negative statement for ND 🙄
@PuppetMaster Well, I hope it can be fixed for people who already updated. Wiping out player upgrade progress is pretty disheartening especially when it kneecaps players deep into the story. It's not as big of a deal for people who didn't update or haven't started playing. So yes, some of the comments are hyperbole but it's not a "simple glitch". I think it's disingenuous to say so.
Edit: And to be clear, I love Naughty Dog and don't understand extreme hate toward them.
I would be angry if this happened to me mid-playthrough. And it might make the platinum go from 2-4 playthroughs depending on where someone is in the process. I'm not sure if I wanna risk launching the game right now to play the new No Return content if doing so could mess up my saves... Or maybe my saves would only get messed up if I play campaign? And is this happening to 100% of players or just a minority?
Did they outsource the update to Bethesda?
@PuppetMaster I dont like those excuses a remaster should not have these problems.
@Flaming_Kaiser If they didn't add anything outside better resolution & frame then sure. But they added new gameplay contents and that means they add new bugs / glitch in the game.
And so far there's no games that 100% free from bugs / glitches.
