As you may have noticed, Push Square is not a Nintendo-driven website. However, when something as big as the Switch 2 showcase is upon us, it only makes sense to write about it from a PlayStation perspective. After all, new hardware has an impact on the entire industry.
And so, having watched yesterday's big Direct, we asked Push Square readers to share their thoughts on Nintendo's new system. In a dedicated Poll article, we put two questions forward: 'Are you sold on the Switch 2?' and 'Could the Switch 2 become your console of choice?'
These kinds of first impressions are always fascinating, because people are still caught up in the moment, potentially revelling in the hype surrounding the mere concept of a brand new console.
Indeed, the poll results make for an interesting read. Over 4,000 users voted in the first, with a sizeable 23% saying that they plan on buying a Switch 2 day one. And remember, we're a PlayStation website!
A further 21% said they're "definitely interested", but the results are pretty much split from there. 15% said they're "on the fence", while 20% and 22% said they either remained unconvinced of the console, or were "completely unsold" on it, respectively.

But it's the second question that really sticks out to us, because it adds context. When asked if the Switch 2 could potentially replace the PS5 as their primary gaming platform, most users said no. A whopping 42% said Switch 2 will be a "secondary console", and another 34% simply said "no chance".

Despite clear steps forward in terms of hardware advancement, then, it seems as though the Switch 2 will be viewed in a very similar way to its predecessor — at least amongst the PlayStation-centric gamers who frequent sites like Push Square.
The immediate perception is that it's a secondary system; plenty of PlayStation fans are interested in buying one, but few have plans to make it their main source of gaming entertainment.

I mean... Not at all surprising given the site we're on.
I will say, having a Switch, PS5, and XOneX (AND Atari VCS...I might add), I don't really think of any of them as my "primary" console. In fact, I usually try to have one active, ongoing playthrough on all of them simultaneously (excccept the Atari...).
I guess I end up playing my Switch the most — due to portability, mostly — but still, I would never call it my primary.

Switch 2 will fulfill the same niche for me Switch 1 currently does: JRPGs/visual novels/indies that aren't on PlayStation, and the few Nintendo franchises I like in Zelda, Xenoblade, Metroid, and Fire Emblem.
Having a PS5 and Switch 2 will be the best combination going forward, you can play all the biggest releases even those from Microsoft.
It's may become direct competition if 1) that new FromSoft game is a must-play or 2) if PlayStation launches a handheld Switch/Steam deck competitor. Right now Sony's just happy someone else increased game prices first.
Exactly the results one would expect from running this poll on a PS dedicated site.
I don't divide my consoles into primary or secondary. I simply play games.
Since the HD era, Nintendo has always been my secondary console.
I dont see it at all.
That's fair. I'm tempted not going to lie. That said it would be for exclusives only. I'm playing anything else on the Pro.
So people are still sold on this even though the price is rumoured to be near enough ps5 level and the games are going to increase the price of gaming.
Wow no wonder the world is having price hikes all over the world because people will just moan but pay anyway.
@UltimateOtaku91
Be sure to buy a Steam Deck or some future handheld PC with SteamOS
The thing about being everyone's second choice is that it's EVERYONE'S second choice. That's a big part of what made the Switch so Successful.
Switch 2 will be my secondary console for games which run with 60 fps only on PS5 (e.g. Cyberpunk 2077).
For games which also run on Switch 2 with 60 fps while retaining an acceptable image quality, I will probably prefer the Switch 2 version (EA Sports FC).
There are great exclusives on both consoles. In the last couple of years, the cadence from Nintendo was higher.
So a draw??
As some other comments have eluded to (IMO), I don't see it as a competition. The console producers and media play that up, but not sure if many gamers really care.
@Enuo That‘s genuinely a great description of the phenomenon Switch!
@Jrs1 Well... yes ofc? I usually forget to go back to their poll posts to check on results that interest me.
With the 2nd post you can see finalized results and main takeaways on the site audience, and both you and me are here commenting; so yes success for them.
Of all bait title posts there are, Poll results ones are not too bad I think.
Same for Nintenboys.
@Bez87 And that's the perk of a free market. People are free to spend their money on the goods and services they deem worthwhile to them, at prices they deem acceptable, and others aren't at liberty to dissuade them.
Sucks but it's the best we got. Shame most of the world likes telling others how to spend their money eh? Or announcing that they are/aren't buying XYZ thing. At the end of the day, who really cares, what Jim, 40, from South Croydon spends his money on doesn't impact the random forum poster here saying it's overpriced and underpowered.
On topic, Switch 2 will likely be my secondary console. PC is my primary. PS5 is a good desk ornament for the rare game I can't get at better performance on PC.
See? Even I'm guilty of it. Society sucks lmao.
No buy till the OLED model comes out, no excuse to be using “LCD” panels in 2025.

Steam Deck is my secondary. Switch (and SW2) barely qualifies for tertiary
I’ve always seen both my PlayStation and Nintendo consoles as the perfect compliment to each other.
Having both has always provided me with all the gaming I need and don’t look at it like “this is my primary console, this is my secondary console.” They’re both just there providing what I need.
Secondary, which costs more than the primary. I'm not against buying it, but only if there will be a system seller game. Until then I see no reason
@zhoont it's multiplayer though...ew
@Jrs1 Those who can, write articles.
Those who can’t, complain about articles being written.
@dskatter At least in my country i can air my views, not looking likely in Cheeto's land 🤣
If you can spend money on it and it takes your attention away from PS5/Xbox/Steam/etc, it’s absolutely competition. Lower specs don’t make Switch 2 any less of a video game console.
I will go months at a time without playing a game on my PS5... so yeah, the Switch 2 will absolutely become my primary console.
Duh.
(Picard gif).
i do remember they emailed out a survey to people in that asked if people would be interested in remote playing being on the switch , they never did anything with it, honestly instead of making their own handheld i'd rather see sony and nintendo partner , i doubt it would happen , but i think it would fit both companies vision.
I don't think this is the best place to determine if Switch 2 could become a main console for people, because obviously the die hard Playstation fans aren't going to switch. The casual people that only buy the average triple A titles and stuff I think very much could make it a primary if enough major 3rd party titles come over and it keeps people to stay with them on Switch 2
I'll get one for Bloodborne II, no question
Thats funny. Been thinking of selling my ps5. Now im going to and get the switch 2
I never been a Nintendo fan.i was a sega genesis fan back in the 1990s.so ps5 pro for the win.word up son
@Haruki_NLI that's all true. But the fact remains we are getting games now which are worse than some early access games selling at 70.
With Nintendo now going to sell games at 80 this is going to just open the flood gates.
Yes everyone has a right to pay what they want.
But I think this may destroy the gaming landscape and alot of companies are going to go under, due to greed and then we will probably end up with the generic trio of games over and over again.
In this climate right now games are expensive enough.
more games and companies are falling to the way side due to people not having the money to buy multiple games.
Upping the price widens that gap immensely.
But like I've said many times about Nintendo, I'm just not surprised it was them who pulled the trigger. Their games have been more expensive than others and they hardly ever go on sale.
I'm sure the PS5 is considered a secondary console on Nintendo Life. Asking fans on a fan site won't give you objective results.
@Dalamar for talking sake, I would never class a console as primary or secondary either (also difficult as I have and continue to play retro consoles too)
But, if we go by the general rule that the primary console is the one that you choose to buy and play most third party/multiplatform games on, then it's the PS5 for me.
Being second console doesn't mean it isn't direct competition. The market is your time playing. They are competing for game sales and engagement aka play hours.
They are also competition for subscription service and online play.
I mean I play my Switch and even my Retroid more than my PS5 these days. The kids are on the PS5 pretty much all day. I won't be getting a Switch 2 unless there's a whole lot more Switch 2 games, and they're priced appropriately.
I currently view my PS5 as the secondary console to my Switch.
a handheld console a secondary to a home console , no surprise here
@Rhaoulos but it will get clicks
@nomither6 this Survey wasn’t done in Japan obviously. Sony has to rent PS5’ over there they are so secondary.
A lot of people I know have that same sentiment. They have a PS5 or XBOX as main and a Switch as a secondary console, just for the Nintendo exclusives. In those cases, none of them is interested in playing the multiplatform games on Switch, since they will look and play better on their XBOX / PS5.
When you consider that, the point of entry is just to damn high for those people to invest in the console at this moment in time, especially when you want games physical, which will cost you €90 per piece!
If you buy one physical game per month, you'll have to spent €360 more per year on Switch 2 compared to the OG Switch. For that same amount of money you could have gotten 6 extra new Switch 1 games!
Primary console? Hell no. But indie/AA games? Yes. But i have steam deck oled so not considering this new console unless there are game that im tempted to play. I have zero interest on Mario game but zelda? I might think about it. Btw zelda tear of the kingdom lego build is bore me to death. Please more linear zelda or semi open world zelda.
I am in for a new Switch but merely for the exclusives. PS5 is definitely my primary
Welcome to push Square. Where being sarcastic and having a bit of fun at the editors expense is not allowed.
Breaking news: Owners of one higher powered console see secondary console as "secondary". Who would've thunk it?
@UltimateOtaku91 Exactly this, I'm primarily a PS5 gamer when it comes to the bulk of my gaming.
I only use Nintendo consoles/handhelds for their 1st party exclusives, like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Pokemon etc.
Yep, Switch 2 (like Switch itself) just a second and handheld only console for me.
