Ubisoft's Rainbow Six franchise exists almost exclusively as the evergreen Rainbow Six: Siege these days, but the publisher is reportedly gearing up to branch the property out into an entirely new genre.
According to Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson — who quite clearly has credible sources at Ubisoft — a tactical, turn-based Rainbow Six spin-off is in development, and it's targeting an eventual PS5 release.
We say 'eventual' because this project is apparently "one or two years out", but the fact that it's been greenlit in the first place is cause for some degree of excitement.
Set in the same Rainbow Six universe as Siege, this sounds like it could be a kind of companion piece to the eternally popular multiplayer title. Sources say that you'll be able to play as Siege's operators, each with their own abilities, which you'll use to complete various missions.
Gameplay-wise, it's apparently comparable to XCOM, which makes sense.
It sounds like it'll be a single-player (or possibly co-op) experience, rather than a competitive one. Supposedly, the game will feature a fairly lengthy 30-ish hour campaign, complete with "cinematic cutscenes".

This could be pretty cool honestly
This makes sense, as Ubisoft has no clue how or why Siege is actually as popular as it is. So why try and make a sequel when they're incapable of recreating its magic?
For the sake of experimentation you'd think they'd at least entertain the idea of returning to single player Rainbow Six games like Vegas. I'm half expecting them to announce an always online multiplayer Splintercell game next.
Door Kickers 2?
Very excited for this as XCOM are in my top 5 favourite franchises of all time...
Anything but XCOM3 it seems.
Yes please. I'll buy it.
@heavyartillery56 Completely different studio and publisher… But it probably be a while till we see XCOM3 since Firaxis just released Civ7
Sounds good to me, but feels strange to me that we're suddenly getting loads of XCOM-likes (Star wars one, marvel one, R6 one) when apparently they dont sell that well?
I wonder if they've sort of worked out a good way to budget it so it can be profitable and sell to the audience of people who want this, or it s a punt and it wont make as much money as the studios expect
In general Ubisoft have not produced games that I've gelled with. But... I have high hopes for them to do this game justice. XCOM is an awesome franchise.
@J-Dubs agree, this could be really cool.
@GirlVersusGame Playing Vegas 2 with a friend, via coop or split screen, was one of the best shooters of the PS3 generation. It'd be great to get another like that!
I love Xcom clones. I want a million of them.
Wow unexpected but I'm excited for that, could be really cool, i love tbs games.
