Falcom generated a backlash last year when it announced Ys X: Proud Nordics — an expanded and enhanced version of Ys X: Nordics, which had only just released in the west.
Well, the saga just got even more questionable with Proud Nordics' full Japanese reveal. As it turns out, this "significantly upgraded" edition of Ys X is actually exclusive to the recently unveiled Nintendo Switch 2, as Falcom states "plans for other platforms, such as PS5 and PC, have yet to be determined".
So, was this the plan all along? That Proud Nordics was always going to be the dedicated Switch 2 re-release? That feels like a logical explanation, but we certainly can't see it being enough to shield Falcom from criticism.
In conclusion, then, we've had some people complaining that Proud Nordics is happening way too soon — and now, we've also got people complaining about it being exclusive to one platform (for the time being, at least).
It's worth remembering, however, that this is currently a Japanese-only announcement. NIS America, Falcom's go-to publishing partner here in the west, hasn't officially recognised the existence of Proud Nordics yet, because it obviously wants to keep selling the original game.
As such, it'll be interesting to see if NISA confirms a localisation over the coming months — and whether Proud Nordics will make it to platforms other than Switch 2 outside of Japan.

I mean they did this with the new Sky remake and it’s coming to PS5 and PC now. So it’s most likely a matter of time. If NISA ends up doing the work for them, Durante is a masterclass porter so we all good
Those anime haircuts can only be the result of your hair getting messed up while sleeping and not showering afterwards. Don't @ me.
I bet it’ll end up coming to PS5
Patience, my friends. Japan exclusivity is the bigger hurdle at this point. Falcom has a good relationship with Sony and their series tend to sell well on PlayStation. Nintendo is most likely handing out some lucrative deals on timed exclusivity to prop up Switch 2's launch.
It'll come. Don't worry. Hold off Ys X for now.
I doubt it will be exclusive but boy that would really stink if Falcom went Nintendo exclusive. Really hope that never becomes a reality.
@Korgon if they did that then they can pack it up as their sales for any future game would be terrible.
Glad I didn't get the game yet smh
I usually devour Ys games as soon as they come out (super special editions and everything) - but I struggled so much to get into X - I just couldn't click with the constant switching mechanic. I'm barely into the game (I basically just unlocked the true(ish) freeroam), but the minute they announced Proud Nordics I put the game down and haven't played since.
I know I'm part of the problem because I'll buy P.N. when it comes out (probably not the special edition if there is one), but I saw no point in playing the base version when there's going to be this new one coming out anyways. My backlog is big enough as is, I might as well wait until this comes out and finish other games off first
@Avol I think the worst part of it is that they are pulling an Atlus and having you buy the whole thing new rather than giving you an upgrade path if you own the original.
@Areus yep. That also heavily killed my desire for it too. It's not like I've sworn off the series as a whole, but it's definitely tempered my interest in getting some of these games immediately (and special editions) if this is the path they are going to go down from here on out
Falcom has long targeted one platform and developed games for it.
Thankfully, NISA seems intent on making sure their games are enjoyable across platforms. Proud Nordics will probably launch across all platforms once it comes West.
So it’ll be $80 on the switch, $70 on PS5?
The exclusive deals are a big motivator even more since it a established series but is unlikely to have massive sales. So it makes sense to focus on a platform that offers an exclusive deal then consider other platforms afterwards. And various developers sometimes only offer some of their titles only on the Switch. Dragon Quest Treasures?, Switch exclusive, Mobile Suit Gundam Destiny Remastered, Switch exclusive. Civ6 launched exclusively on the Switch then came to other platforms later. It's all about how many consoles that have been sold and how many gamers are buying games. The Wii sold tons of consoles but most third party games didn't sell well.
How i put this? It feels like...the current Falcom games lacks the elements that makes them looks fun and unique.
I played Ys X demo but there's something missing that makes me decided not to buy it. I also played Trails through Daybreak demo and again, it just doesn't click with me.
I already stop following Legend of Heroes / Trails series after i got burnout with Cold Steel 3. So possibly i will do the same for Ys series or Falcom games in general.
@Korgon I'm not surprised if Falcom decided to do full Nintendo exclusive.
While Nintendo exclusivity for this series would in no way destroy sales in Japan, the more places a game is available, the better in my opinion.
3rd party exclusive suck, I plan to buy switch 2 though so it's not a problem for me. I hope the game will get 120 fps mode on switch 2 😃
Huh. Guess I'll be emulating that one, then.
Didn't they originally announce Trails in the Sky as a Switch exclusive as well?
This is the game PlayStation should've kept playing all along, and haven't. Nintendo consistently shows confidence is their platform and their brand and the Switch 2 sold the numbers it did. The PS4 did in its time as well as the PlayStation 2 before it. Under Jim Ryan and Herman Hulst, however, as well as the young Japanese spineless CEO they have now, look at Nintendo today. Nintendo is the only company competing that if the industry were to fall apart, they'd be screwed. They'd have nothing to fall back on except making toys and trading cards. Sony and Xbox have much bigger markets to return back to so, if gaming were in such horrible shape, don't you think Nintendo would be showing the most concern? And, well, are they? They sure aren't and it paying off for them. Xbox has concern because they've done well enough to sour and sabotage their brand. Live in a dillusional world, but Phil Spencer is just as guilty as the rest of the crew that put out Xbox One. After all, it was Phil Spencer that walked on stage to announce the launch of Xbox One. He helped in making all of those decisions. Nevertheless, the brand is where it is because of him.
PlayStation, however, isn't in that boat. Far from. PlayStation still has consumer trust, though their inability to keep their developers on task is starting to hurt them. Their first-party developer talent is a good distraction.
Part of the problem with PlayStation right now IS their brand confidence, or their executives leadership in managing funds. They've been too liberal rather than tightening up the screws and showing some responsible parenting. I don't think the well loved PlayStation crew was always so YES ABSOLUTELY! But knew how and when to say NO and enough is enough. And maybe that's how every empire eventually falls. PlayStation doesn't need to be going the route of Xbox. Xbox is going the way they're going because they lost consumer trust. Do you see Nintendos work on PC? Communicating consoles are dying? No. Nintendo says they're as strong as ever! And within three minutes of their direct were already pushing EXCLUSIVE TO SWITCH HARDWARE. Nintendo, who should be the most concerned about the industry ISN'T, so why is PlayStation? Xbox spent $69 billion they obviously couldn't cover and Microsoft is calling back what's owed.
Yeah. Jim Ryans inability to stand up for the industry was an omen when The Show went multiplatform. That was telling of something bad. Phil Spencer never stood up for the industry either telling MLB "That's not how we do business in this industry, sorry." No. Phil Spencer wanted something to move his hardware in desperation. He got a small taste from Insomniac with Fuse and Sunset Overdrive, but it was short lived. Which, where is that by-the-way? I think we've been lied too because it isn't going to cost much of anything to port it to PS5 seeing as how PlayStation hardware and Xbox hardware are so similar these days, it wouldn't take any more than a week.
Yeah, Nintendo isn't concerned. Why can't PlayStation retain its IPs on its own platform. There's no need to be anywhere else. Cost? Look at Space Marine 2. Isn't gaming supposed to be easier since Mark Cerny took over? The PS3 was supposed to have been the nightmare. PS4 and PS5 were supposed to be significantly easier, no? So, what's the hold up?
