'These Are Not Timed Exclusives': Xbox Says Gears of War, Clockwork Revolution Are Never Coming to PS5

So they still don't know what the hell they're doing. Got it. However, I wouldn't take the fact it's not timed at face value. We've heard it before.

They’re not timed exclusives but they’ll come to PS5 eventually. They just don’t know when.

This is the best way. Have popular games that make money come to PS5, and the other should stay on Xbox to keep things competitive. I got a PS5 for Wolverine, a Switch 2 for Fire Emblem/Pokemon, and an Xbox for Gears/Clockwork Revolution.

Successful brands have exclusivity. Like it or not, it works. If you move away from it, your ecosystem becomes unsustainable.

Well. New boss, new rules. I expect share of "console exclusives" will increase in future.
If I only had PS5 and expected TES VI on console as a sure bet, I wouldn't be so sure anymore.

So they announce games to come to playstation and games not coming to playstation and expect that this will some how bring back people to Xbox?

Do they not know that the ship was sinking while they had exclusives?

And do they realise that Gears isn't the system seller they think it is?

Their biggest problem isn't PS5, its they release the games day and date onto pc and game pass, they is really no need for an xbox and thats evident with the sales figures for xbox before the whole ps5 push.

This just muddies the water even more with the different games. Its a mess

I haven't touched my Series X in almost 2 years and won't be picking Gears up for £70 on a dead platform. If it had come to PS5 though, I would've. This decision will lead to Gears flopping hard.

@Greifchen Might be previous agreements, State of Decay might have multiplayer, which would be better on multiple platforms.

Clockwork makes some sense to me but making Gears exclusive after bringing the first one to PlayStation rubs me the wrong way. Regardless, there was nothing they could have announced today that would make me even consider buying an Xbox console again, but I’ll gladly play Fable, State of Decay 3, and Grounded 2 when they come to PlayStation

And once the sales numbers and financial results trickle in, that will cave again sooner or later. This hot potato approach will probably do them more harm then good, but we shall see.

@Naughtyottsel92 PS5 has as many exclusives as Xbox right now. I think it is reasonable to expect all these platforms to have exclusives.

I wonder what their plan is exactly, COD and StarField (and StarField being a console exclusive too) being on gamepass didn't increase Xbox console sales, so Gears E-Day and Clockwork Revolution aren't going to either. It just seems they're going to harm those 2 games sales-wise. I do wonder if they'll change their stance yet again once these games miss their sales targets and don't increase gamepass subs.

Not bothered by it, personally. Not interested in either games. And whether its a wise decision i dont know, but i do believe a platform needs exclusives to sell, so i support Xbox’s decision here!

So MS can do both, have multi platform games and keep some exclusives too. Not a hard to grasp concept, but clearly there are some who struggle with it😃.

Forza Horizon: timed exclusive.
Gears of War: was in full development but now is exclusive.
New announcements like Senua: on everything.

I am happy for xbox fans if that's what they want but this company is all over the place.

GOOD!! I have said it a few times now, Microsoft has finally found its balls! And it only took the hiring off a women to be Xbox's new CEO... The more exclusives the better IMO as it will boost their platform. About time they played the same game again that Nintendo and Sony have been playing for decades now.

They’re using Halo 1 & Gears 1 as teasers to entice people to play any of the other games on their platform by buying an xbox. i see what they’re doing, but it failed with the (butchered) gears 1 remake. Not only is gears no where near as popular as it used to be, but they’ve destroyed its reputation with terrible sequels like 4 and 5, and the horrible remaster on ps5; and i have no doubt that the halo 1 remake will be trash too.

I can’t help but feel for the Gears of War: E-Day developers. A PS5 release could have opened the door to millions of additional sales given the PS5’s massive install base. That’s a lot of potential players and revenue to miss out on.

What Sony should do is if there's a future Destiny game it's Playstation only.
Any new Destiny should more like Space marines 2 and not more mmo like with no expansions with only sequels. Two can play this game.

Is it really that hard to understand? They had a previous direction under previous leadership, they're honoring the commitments previously made, and going in a new direction under new leadership going forwards.

as with other genius decisions made by consensus by listening to the fans such as Mirrors Edge Catalyst and a new skate game, I'm sure this will pan out well and result in lots of sales and not a massive red line on a financial sheet as a direct result of this dumb decision.

Yeah I don’t believe them for one min. You got a complete Gears E Day just sitting there the game is going to come out and underperform because you have a dead console brand and within a year it will be released on ps5

Well Hellblade 3 and State of Decay 3 were not already announced for Playstation.

This should be the case with ALL of the new Xbox-published stuff they announced at the showcase. Also, that explanation from Xbox PR makes no sense considering Hellblade 3, State of Decay 3, and Spyro are going to PS5 as well.

I wonder if Gears Reloaded didn’t meet sales expectations on PS5. If there’s no appetite for the title, then it makes sense to pull it back and exploit fanboy fever for it as an Xbox exclusive. It’s all a question of how they think they’ll make most money from a title. It’ll be interesting to see how Halo does on PS5.

Well, Xbox has every right to do what they want with their exclusives.

I mainly play on PS5 Pro and PC. I got a series X and have not touched it for years and even cancelled gamepass. Those 2 exclusive games won’t make me change my mind and switch on the Xbox. I think once the new Xbox CEO is going to get pressure from the shareholders because her new strategy to bring back exclusives to XBox is not going to grow the brand or make money (because of the availability of every game on gamepass), she will change her mind and, at the very least, release on PC if not on PS5 as well. Gear may sell a few more Xbox consoles but not enough to justify investing money in exclusives.

I think most people would agree that Xbox are fighting an uphill battle. Trying to make a big swing for exclusives again makes sense - as it's a model both Nintendo and Sony have chained themselves to - but it's gonna be hard to sell people who don't have an Xbox at this point to jump aboard.

Personally I want Microsoft to succeed here, simply because I want Sony to have solid competition. All three companies have shown signs of growing complacent when they were on top, and that doesn't benefit any of us.

Getting angry and/or rationalizing how the games will suck anyway whilst also praising Sony for pulling out of the PC-market is not a great look, though. Either the rules are fair play for everyone, or they're not. But I also have both consoles, and no tribal loyalty to either, so Microsoft taking their toys and staying home doesn't hurt me one bit.

The new Gears game looks awesome, it’s the first one that got me really interested since the 360 games. But I hope it flops and Xbox revert this dumb decision.

Xbox is dying, Xbox players won't buy anything that's on GP and Xbox is just a dirty and uncool brand with almost zero presence in most of the world. Helix is the last Xbox console and its going to lose MS so much money. Sony doesn't need PC sales or Xbox sales but MS needs PS, PC and Switch sales hence why they haven't fully dropped 3rd party releases. Asha will be gone within a few years, she doesn't stay long in this companies and i think she's repeating all the mistakes Phil made. I like her she seems nice enough and i don't blame her for this or envy her, she was giving a terrible hand but it what it is.

I think this is quite funny. They bring gears to PS users with reloaded just to try and bait them into what, buying an xbox to play the next gears game? I agree with some others here, I feel for the developers.

Gears reloaded is pretty much already dead even with the bigger player base. (I know it’s a remake of a remake and that may be part of it.). After seven years since the last gears game, this franchise is no longer the (system) seller they once thought it was. Also, since this game will be on gamepass day one, good luck with those sales.

I don’t want to be the person looking for a fail, but this isn’t likely to go well. I think it was dirty to the PS users who bought in to reloaded in the first place, but the playerbase needs all the help it can get. If this game ends up being a flop, The Coalition is most likely done and there will be no gears 6.

The new boss thinks it’s a good thing, but I’m willing to bet most xbox players won’t even like it. Especially when the game is dead fast, for multiple reasons like so many games releasing around the same time.

I agree with Sammy, “the plan is the plan until it’s no longer the plan”. Most PS users who played gears on PS5 will not be buying an xbox for gears E-day. We’ll see.

@DennisReynolds I do feel like Asha is getting a ton of credit for making a few token changes: the logo, removing the "everything is an Xbox" tagline; and reversing some things: price of Gamepass, although it's still higher than it was before. But ultimately, the damage has been done. Their messaging is all over the place: Clockwork Revolution and Gears of War E-Day will forever be Xbox exclusives, but Gears 1 and Halo are on PS5? And Forza Horizon 5 sold like crazy on PlayStation. So at this point, I just think everything coming out of there needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

I think this is the right call for Xbox, but it’s going to take a lot more than picking and choosing a few games here and there to remain exclusive if if they’re going to undo the damage done from the “This an Xbox” era and flirting with becoming a full blown third party publisher. One foot in isn’t going to cut it.

@nomither6 The XBOX One reveal was one of the most catastrophic things ever in the history of gaming. XBOX literally had the industry in its hands following on from the 360. Yes the PS3 sold slightly more but the perception at the time was that XBOX was the better option. Most third party games played far better on 360 and the first party games were legendary.

And then they ****ed up and tried to do too much too soon and forced an unnecessary peripheral on XBOX fans.

That generation was the point where people started building digital libraries and XBOX missed the boat. If they hadn't made those mistakes then I genuinely think that the entire games industry would look very different today.

Can XBOX make a comeback when it comes to selling hardware again? I doubt it.

Would I like them to? Yes. Because a complacent PlayStation is a bad PlayStation.

@PSXB It is a struggle to understand it, yes. There's seemingly no inherent logic to it. Why release Gears of War on PS5 but not E-Day? That doesn't make sense. Why release their golden crown that is Halo on PS5? Gears of War is great but it is not the system seller they think it is. Either do exclusives or don't. Don't have this best of both worlds approach. It would seem Xbox doesn't know if they want to be a platform or a publisher and they have been struggling to get a good strategy ever since their disatrous reveal of the Xbox One.

Sony bought Nixxes software in 2021 for that specific purpose, well that was a waste of money.

Series consoles are the lowest selling Xbox consoles coming after the X1 the previous lowest selling Xbox consoles. GP has killed sales on Xbox so much MS has had no choice but to go 3rd party on most games. Helix will be at the very least a 1K console and most of the Series playerbase are SS owners, you do really think the people who bought a SS a budget console are going to happily buy a 1K console?

Off topic.. been thinking of selling my PS5 on Vinted, and buying a second hand PS5 Pro on the platform too. Anyone else done this? Is it a safe platform?
Speaking of price, Pro is so expensive now, I dread to think what PS6 will cost.

@S1ayeR74 Can't speak for Vinted but will say providing you go in with the right expectations the Pro is very much worth it. PSSR 2.0 had honestly been a game changer this year and is easily the best upscaler on console.

They aren't planned but 100% will end up on PS5 probably after a year or so. They will see that majority of the players play for a bit on gamepass and don't actually get sales. While State of Decay 3 will sell like crazy and The Coalition will go "wait how come we don't have a piece of that money pie". PS5 install base is too massive compared to XBOX, they are just leaving money on the table.
