@johncalmc well, having looked into them a bit since the purchase, i have a feeling they probably wouldn't be my cup of tea anyway.

@johncalmc Well done on the Platinum. Your times do seem pretty quick. I think I spent over 50 hours getting all the achievements in Danganronpa 1. I also spent a similar time playing Danganronpa 2, but ignored some of the more grindy achievements.

So I'm not a trophy hunter by any stretch of the imagination, I have 2 plats Horizon Zero Dawn and Astros Playroom but since reading a few comments on different pages of this forum it has got me thinking what does a Platinum trophy actually mean to you?

I normally like to complete a games story and if the gameplay is good I like to complete all extra side quests/challenges but it has to be a special game to keep me playing for longer than just the main game, the likes of Skyrim, The Witcher 3, God of War and the likes. Mainly due to time restraints it's complete a game and then move on to the next one.

Now it has always scratched away at me that I never got the plat for God of War because I enjoyed that game so much that I don't think of it as a waste of time if I was to replay it but I just moved on because I'm not really a "trophy hunter".

But now I've looked through a list of games that I really enjoyed playing, God of War, Spiderman, Bloodborne,Skyrim and even the game I'm playing now Days Gone and I'm looking at the trophy lists of what I have left to get the plats and I'm thinking I should go for it! I'm even searching online as to how long and how difficult/grindy they would be.

What have you people done to me!!! 🤣

@RogerRoger @MaulTsir I'm not really a trophy hunter either but got addicted to trying to platinum, or get as many trophies as I could, games that I really enjoyed. That started with Uncharted for me and I've generally tried to do all of the Sony exclusives but have branched out into others as well. Recently I got Spider-Man MM Ultimate Edition so have the remastered Spider-Man and rather than importing my save so that all the trophies just pop I've started it again from scratch, just because it's a great game. That's definitely the thing for me, it has to be a great game for me to want to do it but when I find a game I enjoy then I can't rest until it's done. Still kicking myself that I will never ever get that Hollow Knight platinum.

@MaulTsir Like others, I get them in games I’m really enjoying where they’re achievable. I don’t want to sacrifice enjoying a game for trophies though; I played on Uncharted game with a collectibles guide but it’s impossible to use one without spoiling the game.

On the PS3, I didn’t buy many games as I was a student so it was a way of getting my money’s worth in some cases (e.g. CoD: World at War). The other thing is AAA games are longer than ever now so I’m never going to get trophies that require multiple plays either now.

@MaulTsir Platinum trophies don't mean anything to me. They're digital bobbles without value. And, coming from a previous discussion I had in this thread, it doesn't really matter to me if a game has a platinum or not.

With that said, if I like a game, and the trophy list is sensible, then I like to collect all the trophies as a way of fully engaging with the game. There are definitely a few scenarios where I almost got all the trophies, but I stopped before the platinum one.

Rayman Legends, for example, has this one that requires you to grind online challenges for months. I did this for a week or two, and then decided that life was too short.

Detroit: Become Human has a few trophies that are just a massive pain in the butt, and the game doesn't make it easy to quickly run through again after beating it initially.

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir has an annoying trophy that requires you to collect all of the in-game recipes. I apparently didn't, so... shrug

I don't really consider my platinum-less runs to be less valid because I avoided an obnoxious trophy or two. If I feel like I fully experienced the game, that's enough for me.

@RogerRoger You are the biggest culprit!! 🤣 Joking, no need for apologise its another element of my gaming I can enjoy, for a long time I've looked at it as an unnecessary time waster.

@render spider-man was one of the games I was looking through and I was only about 7 trophies short but I think I will most likely do the same because I enjoyed the game so much and hopefully get the Miles Morales plat too.

@Thrillho @Kidfried @Ralizah I think that's where I'm at, the trophies and plats to be honest have little bearing on me and never really interested me to go for them as I felt completing the game and enjoying the side quests or extra content was enough for me.

I started to look at some of the games I'd played and looked at the trophies and thought well to be honest why didn't I go for that plat, I enjoyed the game so much so it wouldn't of been to much of a burden to stick around for the extra hours and grab it. It's just got me thinking is all wanted to see other people's prospectives on it.

I won't become a full time trophy hunter if a game requires to many playthroughs or really time consuming or boring trophies I wouldn't even consider them, same with online trophies, I checked RDR2 and the trophies for the main game I didn't have too many left and looked doable but the online ones would take way too much time/dedication. I will though look more closely as I'm playing a game and if I'm enjoying it and it seems possible I'll probably go for it from now on.

@colonelkilgore I have 2 we'll see how many I get by the end of the year. I'll probably still be on 2 and this will just be a fad 🤣

@MaulTsir I had 13 before lockdown... wasn't majorly into plat hunting but got my first in 2017 and then would 'go for' the plat if I was particularly enjoying a game thereafter.

Then lockdown struck and I had about 2 months off (was stricken with covid for 3 weeks of them mind) and I had nothing better to do with my time so I just thought let's try and plat a few of the backlog. Think I managed around a further 4 or 5 in that short amount if time (Fallen Order, Farcry 5, Final Fantasy 15 and one or two others that I can't recall) and I was well and truly bitten by the bug. Ended up getting 19 last year and am aiming for around that mark again this.

As sad as it sounds (well... as sad as it is even) I thoroughly enjoy it. I'm one of those people that always kinda liked a grind anyway though.

After about 6 years of on and off play I've finally got the Final Fantasy X Remaster platinum trophy,
hopefully X-2 doesn't take as long.......

@MaulTsir I don’t have a whole lot to add to the trophy enthusiasts who have posted before me, but I will say that there are a couple of my 27 Platinums that stick out as symbols of memorable games. Many of the 27 were earned and not much comes to my memory regarding it, but a handful of my platinums really do stick out as enriching the overall game. God of War is one of those. If I would have stopped at the end of the main storyline, then yes, I would have loved the game, but the extra hours I spent seeking the remaining trophies and defeating the final optional bosses really put the game over the top for me. A few other platinums have enhanced the game for me and made me think of the game on another level, however not all have. Sometimes it was a chore. But more often than not it was at the very least fun and satisfying.

Whenever I start a new game I look at how difficult the platinum is considered to be without looking at spoilers. There's certain things I tend to avoid when it comes to going for the platinum - if the game requires multiple playthroughs and isn't short I generally won't bother, online trophies are a no, exceptionally grindy ones etc.

There are exceptions of course. Dark Souls for example requires multiple playthroughs but that's part of the game. But, for example, the old Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 platinums that required you to play the game on easy and normal and hard individually - no time for that.

If a trophy list looks like it's going to annoy me then I'll just ignore it and just play the game without trophies in mind at all.

@johncalmc yeah I always check the opening section of a trophy guide too ie time to plat, minimum number of playthru’s, missable trophies, speed-runs required, difficulty, online trophies. What I’ve found though is initially those requirements might have put me off but I’ve now found myself at the stage where I’m still taking these kinds of trophy lists on. I will just bookmark the missable trophies (avoiding as many spoilers as possible when doing so) and ensure I pop them as I go.

@colonelkilgore I still take some on. It depends on the game. Like Dark Souls I knew would require multiple runs but I knew that going in and I wanted to do it because I wanted a bash at new game plus anyway. Mass Effect 2 I played a few times to see the differences. Infamous or something where you make different choices.

But sometimes multiple runs will make or break it for me - like there's no way I'd have the platinum in Mad Max, for example, if I had to play it twice. I got it because it was an open world do everything in any order no missables etc classic trophy list. Like an Assassin's Creed or something.

Basically I think it depends on the game how much effort I'm willing to put in.

@johncalmc yeah I’m with you on the multiple play through s on open world games (like if Mad Max required it)... although I’ve recently bought the Yakuza games and I think they require multiple playthru’s. I guess I’ll have to see how I feel after the first Yakuza playthru.

@johncalmc @colonelkilgore I would sometimes check for any missable trophies, but that would occasionally contain spoilers, so I stopped doing that.

@colonelkilgore Yakuza was one of those where I abandoned all hope of the platinum and just played it for fun. I've only played the first Yakuza but it seemed like it was going to take forever and I was worried that it would annoy me and ruin the experience. That's another thing. I take a punt on whether I think getting all of the trophies will ruin the experience for me. If they're grindy or tedious sounding then - particularly for a story based game - I'll just play it and enjoy it and not worry.

I don't pay much attention to trophies when I'm first starting out on a game. It's only when I'm far into it that I'll look to see what's required for Platinum.

If the trophies aren't too tedious, I'm enjoying the game, and want to play more of it, then I'll go for the platinum. Otherwise I won't worry about trophies.

@colonelkilgore As I’ve said before, for Yakuza games it’s not the fact you’d have to replay the game that would stop me going for platinum with the insane completion list each game has that means you’ll spend hours eating at every restaurant as well as having to master mahjong and other Japanese board games/gambling games.

@Thrillho yeah I do remember you mentioning it... and trust me I’m not devaluing your thoughts but I’m at least going to try on the first Yakuza game I end up playing (be it 0 or Kiwame) and if it does turn out to be too much I’ll gracefully withdraw at story completion.
