New Star GP goes beyond a fitting tribute to SEGA's arcade classic, Virtua Racing. When tracks bear striking similarities to Interlagos, Silverstone, and more — never mind that you're fighting off-brand rivals like Michael Schildhauer and Niki Laube — New Star GP takes clear inspiration from Formula 1 to deliver a compelling experience. Boasting a surprisingly hefty career mode, we've rarely seen arcade racers with this much depth.
Set across five decades, New Star GP's career mode shines with its simulation elements. While additional race types like reversed tracks and an elimination mode create good variety, each weekend ends with a Grand Prix lasting six laps. That involves managing your pit stop strategy with considerations for tyre wear, fuel load, and potential weather changes. Less fuel ensures greater speed and better handling through corners, though longer pit lanes and different corners mean each track has individual considerations.
There's a fine degree of strategy, creating some thrilling races boosted by the rivalry system. Across each decade, your relationship with other drivers is affected by track etiquette. Keeping your overtakes clean helps establish friendly relationships with other drivers, though collisions and negative comments made during interviews sour their opinions of you. That leads to them blocking overtakes more aggressively, creating an exciting dynamic.
Hitting performance targets awards an in-game currency named BUX and you can invest these in car development with options like improved brakes or better acceleration. Key staff members also provide intriguing perks, such as fully automated pitstops and slipstreaming other cars. There is plenty to consider, though this becomes a balancing act as prioritising one person's perks over another causes dissatisfaction. Anyone who's particularly unhappy will eventually leave, and New Star GP entertainingly manages teams without getting bogged down in the details.
That said, while we realise this is rare for the genre, qualifying before races would be nice. Perks like starting races in 9th place don't provide a real substitute. Furthermore, online multiplayer's omission is also disappointing, though at least there's local multiplayer for up to four players. These aren't deal breakers, though, and when the core campaign is this good, New Star GP comes recommended.

Got an early copy of this for my Series X and absolutely loving it. One of the best racing games in a while IMO.
I'm an absolute sucker for retro-modern games like this. Can't wait to play.
Does it use the analog triggers for brake and throttle?
Not gonna lie this looks well made. Color me intrigued.
Nice review, thanks. I'm now very interested in trying this!
Is this by the same devs as New Star Manager or is it just a coincidence?
This game is only a PS4 release? Hmm.
Hey, couch multiplayer for 4 people is nice! As much as I’d love for the game to have online multiplayer, the reality is that the online scene for an indie game like this would probably be dead after a couple of weeks anyway. There are just too many games on the market nowadays. I have about 80 people on my friend list, and even when a popular game releases, like Helldivers 2, for example, there are only a couple of ‘em playing it.
Another thought: Considering the EA F1 game just released on PS+, I’m curious to know whether increased exposure to that game will get people excited for New Star GP…or if it’ll totally kill off the number of people buying New Star GP. Inquiring minds want to know!! 😋
@Incognito_D Same team, yeah.
@jgrangervikings1 and @GeminiReign, I'm not disparaging the local multiplayer; I'll take that any day over online. But I do think it's a shame the game doesn't have both. I've got friends scattered across the UK I'd love to jump in with, though I appreciate this is an indie team.
@VitaminDJ Yes it does
Appreciate the review, definitely adding this to my wishlist.
This looks really good. Also wishlisted!
@Terra Could you perhaps try the Share Play feature for online multiplayer?
@get2sammyb I can do but not for two days annoyingly, I'm travelling currently
Releasing a PS4-only game right now seems like an odd choice.
Not into these, too many of them. Gravity Trickster was PS4 only too. PS5 is backwards compatible who cares just get it either way. Besides does the resolution matter that much for some artstyles, in some cases yes but not every devs was able to start on PS5. Not everyone can afford or utilise a PS5 dev kit to the fullest either. If Sony gives them out sure but otherwise players have no idea the actuality of devs, neither do Journalists wanting online multiplayer.
Are they a big enough Indie, maybe but in the case they aren't who has that much money for servers? What kind of idiots are you people. If they wanted to put even a reasonable about of time and money let alone a few servers for multiplayer. People would give up on these games for one due to small counts to play with or because of players to offer enough servers to account for.
Not every shooter needed a multiplayer either. Some people just see features to add to a box or want something without thinking what it takes to make it happen let alone just taking turns multiplayer could still be a thing even. Online multiplayer is costly. Not every game needs it. Otherwise play other games or play games properly with what they offer then complaining about everything and the kitchen sink with what games "NEED". It's pathetic.
I judge by game mechanics sure but at least I'm reasonable enough to know the difficulties of what goes into a game and the worlds/dialogue and more take a lot of time and have a lot of talented people even if I have no interest in a game. I still appreciate it even if I prefer other things, I still give suggestions where I think games lack because I care or think the games lack and focus on their trends than actually good additions they leave open cough Biomutant animal movesets are bland and Foamstars can't use foam in interesting ways so it's bland.
Push Square no online multiplayer I'm sorry but do you think Indies have servers just lying around their house/studio or multiplayer design expertise? That's AAA maintaining levels stuff.
If Share play works then sure I guess. I don't know many other methods to go about such things.
Split screen or local maybe sure but online that's a whole beast of things many devs can't offer.
@VitaminDJ yes
