The updated re-release of Quake was a rousing success, so there was no shortage of excitement when an updated version of Quake II suddenly dropped during QuakeCon 2023. And much like the first title, it's quite an impressive package.
The first thing to note is the sheer amount of content you get. You get the base game of Quake II, its entire multiplayer suite, both major expansions — 'The Reckoning' and 'Ground Zero' — the entirety of Quake II 64, and most excitingly, a brand new campaign. MachineGames created a new campaign for the update of Quake, 'Dimension of the Machine', and they've returned once again with 'Call of the Machine'. The MachineGames campaign is fascinating, and worth the impressively low price of entry on its own; the game will only set you back £7.99/$9.99. A modern campaign designed inside one of the most preeminent shooters of all time is really interesting to behold, and while many modern boomer shooters can emulate that experience, there's something to be said about getting it from the source.
While the volume of content is impressive, one area that under-delivers compared to Quake is in the gameplay. Hit detection with the starting pistol is wildly inconsistent. Luckily, you rarely have cause to use it after finding even a single other weapon, making it a nuisance at worst. However, hit detection when shooting at basic Strogg foot soldiers is also inconsistent, though some of this may be a product of updates to enemy AI. While the enemy can quite effectively dodge your bullets — with fluid animations to boot — oftentimes your shots will go right through them, even when they're simply idling.
Outside of the first few levels of the base game, which remain as bland as ever, Quake II looks exceptional. Crisp textures, vibrant, high-contrast environments, and enemies equal parts iconic and grotesque.
It’s a stunning package, filled to the brim with content both new and old, and barring the handful of small issues, it's a brilliant way to revisit one of the most iconic shooters in video games.

If you have the old quake 2 on steam, you'll get the remaster for free, nice
7/10 for Quake 2! I suppose the Red Dead Redemption port will get the same score as this!
The gameplay is as thrilling as it's ever been, levels are multilayered, hours of high quality content and Nightdive have even added in a compass feature so modern players attuned to handholding don't get lost.
This review is most definitely the "outlier" for the game. If you're on the fence about this game, ignore this review and get it anyway.
@pip_muzz Yup, it's a 9/10 for me, especially for the price ($10 or free upgrade on steam if you already bought the old game).
Quake 2 a historic legendary fps gets a mini review. This game deserved much more attention than this. The pistol was always a dodgy weapon in the first place and i doubt that it really gets used once you get the better guns anyway. How about information about the resolution,frame rates etc? How does the multiplayer hold up? How do the gyro controls feel and perform? £7.99 and i'm about to drop the hammer on it for the weekend as it really floats my boat.
Had this on ps1, gonna get this. Great price, not even going to wait for sale.
Moments like this I wish there was an "ignore reviewer" button like there is for "ignore user" as whilst it's certainly an opinion, it's so far from mine that it's clear our gaming tastes couldn't be further apart.
7/10; are you actually serious? XD
I've been playing through this and it's an absolute joy; remains insanely satisfying to this day. Not to mention Nightdive studios' incredibly extensive work on it, AND the generous bounty of content. And all for £7.99.
As for hit detection you might want to tweak your controls slightly.
So yeah, this is a 9/10 at bare minimum sorry.
7 is a good score guys, relax. You don't have to get so personal
Does ps5 ver support VRR and 120fps?
I don't see how such a package filled to the brim with content (new & old!) and with actual effort and love put into the remastering gets such a low score.
I eagerly wait for the Red Dead "remaster" review which is filled with spite and disgust for us! If possible I would also like Mr Graham to do that review🙂
@StrawberryTurtle I agree but Quake II isn't "good"; it's gosh darn fantastic. If I had to pick a game that came out in the same year, let's say, Tomb Raider II, that game is "good", it was brilliant then, but has aged poorly; no amount of 4K up-res or 120fps will improve its jankiness. Quake on the other hand is smooth as butter. Have you tried it yourself?
@AndyKazama
120 fps yes. VRR, not sure. But every Nightdive studios release has ran smooth as butter so you don't need it.
Weird that this is the first time I have seen a "hit detection" issue in a Quake II review.

@StrawberryTurtle True, but Horizon Forbidden West got a 9/10 here, while following your logic it would deserve a 6/10.
Yes, I don’t like the Horizon games and will repeat it forevermore.
@StrawberryTurtle this one is. The game got almost perfect scores across the board - including sister sites of push. This one was delayed - they had to think about it for a bit if you catch my drift. A 7 is like getting an 'F' in school - they hardly ever give anything lower than an 8. For a classic everyone is gushing over? Come now.
odd don't you think? notice my prediction in my last sentence - even though it is being called out now - it will still happen. should be a gas!
Wtf only 7/10 for Quake II? That can’t be right
Interesting review score. 7 out of 10, really? This remaster is amazing. The lowest of any review out there. Nintendo life and PureXbox give it 10 out of 10. Every other review is overwhelmingly positive. Methinks this has to do with MS owning Bethesda now.

lol. Some of y'all geeking over the review score make me NOT want to play the game. 7 ain't bad. It's fine. If you disagree, then cool. Move on and go play something. Probably only Quake apparently.
So i've bought it and played through a portion of the game. Hit detection is fine but i did adjust the aiming sensitivity down a touch as somebody here reccomended. For £7.99 this is a lot of game(s) and is very nice and smooth. I have not tried multiplayer yet or the gyro controls so i can not comment on those yet. I would say 8/10 for me but then i have a special place in my heart for quake 2. Now all i need is a remaster of deus ex and i'd be in gaming nirvana for a while.
As a re-release of an old game this did every single thing right; from the content right down to the price. The score does seem odd in that regard.
@LazyLombax You have 16 friends?! That’s awesome! I’m sitting over here with my one friend. I’m counting myself. 😹
Don't care about the score as its only an opinion but i do think compared to the treatment the two sister sites gave it this mini review feels very thrown together and is just here because they knew it needed reviewing.
@Cashews School grades and score for films/games are two different things, a 7/10 for a game or film means its good.
I've had Quake 2 on my Steam library for what feels like a decade and I finally played it with this Remaster and I really like it!
Glad to see 2 get a similar treatment in a Remaster as 1.
I can't say I've noticed these hit detection issues and have had no trouble shooting enemies, though I'm playing elsewhere so maybe it's a Playstation thing
Personally this is an easy 10 at the for me, it's a brilliant remaster of a great game and some of the most fun I've had playing games this year
Seeing everyone banging on about scores. The reviewer gets it wrong wah wah wah.
I'm currently playing quake 2, it's solid, fun and a decent time waster. But it has aged. Not as much as goldeneye tbf but it's definitely aged. The action is fast but the enemies leave a lot to be desired. The level layouts are sub par, gruelling and tiresome.
I honestly understand why any retro heads with nostalgia are happy to pass a 10. The remaster and additions are ace. For me, it's a 6 or 7 compared to current games. I never played quake 2 back in the day (my first foray into pc shooters was unreal tournament) so I'm glad I've had the opportunity to play it, the price is simply perfect. So weighing up the price and accounting for my own ignorance I would plump for an 8/10.
Too ancient to me. Pass
@pip_muzz I completely agree. This release of a universally beloved game deserves far more than a 7.
@wiiware I agree 100%
@KaijuKaiser Thank you!
@JB_Whiting As you've pointed out, this game hasn't aged compared to its contemporaries. An absolute 9 if not 10 for the love they've treated this game and port.
@__jamiie Yup; I think a lot of people who are a bit sniffy about this haven't played it when it came out and are comparing it, rather unfairly, against modern day games.
This title was a landmark in not just FPS games, but 3D level design, multiplayer and responsive gameplay. The fact that Nightdive went in and improved the enemy AI to make them more aggressive, reactive and unpredictable is utterly commendable. All for the price of a large Mcdonald's meal. This achievement should be lauded.
@JB_Whiting You've confirmed my point about this game. And far more eloquently. 👍
@themcnoisy To be fair to Goldeneye (or I guess to be more fair to Quake II) far more work has gone into this Quake II update than the Goldeneye one received haha. Goldeneye is more cool to revisit as a neat antiquity. Quake II plays on par (more or less) with contemporary "boomer shooters" I would say.
Ahhhh the OG Unreal! good times!
@Kidfried @Kanji-Tatsumi Noooo, stop defending me! I belong in a sanitarium for really liking this remaster, and liking the remaster of Quake 1 even more!
@JB_Whiting mentioned in the review, the hit detection is more a nuisance rather than a widespread systemic problem. Just seems like something that warrants mentioning considering the title in question happens to be a Quake game haha.
@JB_Whiting I think everyone would agree the price is great. The game is definitely playable and fun. The graphics are amazing for the time, truly outstanding that it was being played in 1997 at this speed. I truly do understand why it's held in such high regard.
But coming on to it now having never played it prior (I have played Doom and a plethora if other ids stuff) the level design isn't great. Some of the locations are sweet, the map screen has alien vibes (always a good thing), the enemies are serviceable, more sci fi generic than unique imo.
But the gameplay, and you may argue with this, isn't engaging. You need to use the same tactics to overcome every fight and I've tried it on all the different difficulties. The pistol is useless, the shotgun is useless once you have the super shotgun, so each new weapon is better than the last which lacks the nuance of other fps since Halo. The gimmicks are predictable (enemy placement, clicking switches, grabbing key cards). But it's still a lot of fun and like an earlier comparison - comparing this remaster to the recently released goldeneye port, is night and day.
In 97 this would have been right up there with Final Fantasy 7 and Super Mario 64. Those games have aged too. Anyone brand new to either of those games, as good as they are, would find issues with how they play. We could argue all day, but if the reviewer doesn't have the nostalgia - the games a slog at times. The new compass is a god send, as without it, it really does feel bogged down (I finished about 3 levels and they all took hours until I found out about the compass). Some of the necessary passageways around the levels are acute and easily missable. Some of the deaths feel cheap (missile launching enemy camped under and behind you when you drop in to a room).
But credit has to be given for the buttery smooth frame rate. It's so good. We need more of this going forward.
So at this price of under a tenner, it's a massive recommend for sure. Weirdly, I've just finished the OG campaign after writing my earlier comment and my 6 or 7 initial score was misguided. It's a solid 8 out of 10.
I understand everyone has differing opinions, but the final score doesn’t seem to match the effusive praise of the review text. I can’t quite understand the disconnect.
That said I think this was a must-buy upgrade for one of the most iconic FPS games in history. I got it on PS5 and Switch — and then learned my Steam automatically upgradeded it for free too. I now have it in on three platforms and I’m not upset. Can’t get enough.
@Northern_munkey A Nightdive helmed remaster of Deus Ex sounds perfect! They seem to be the master of updating and re-invigorating life into titles (especially shooters it seems) from this era
@Olskeezy If you've never played it, please don't be scared away! You'd be doing a disservice to yourself (assuming you're interested in shooters of course.) That being said (and this might rile up even more people), I'd recommend starting with the updated PS5 version of Quake 1, I preferred that one haha
FWIW, the game still has a 90 on OpenCritic even after including this site’s score (which is the lowest, of course).
https://opencritic.com/game/15352/quake-ii
US Square, at least compared to NintenosLife, 9/10 times will always set a score 1 or 2 less. It’s amazing how many times that happens.
@LazyLombax “A stranger’s just a friend you haven’t met!” 😹👍
This game is soooo good ... It still is , the amount of content on offer is amazing ... The level design is among the best , enemies lurking around every corner , you're never safe haha
Go play this people !
A 7/10 because you can't aim?
@PixelDragon My guess is perhaps he isn't familiar with Quake and scored the game itself rather than be like "well Quake is a genre-defying masterpiece, no need to judge the game on its own merits, so here's a review of the package as a whole." Who knows
@PixelDragon The Steam upgrade being free, awesome as it is, has no bearing on the PS5 review. Free PC upgrades are always incredibly welcome of course.
And that's why it's listed as a "pro"! Because it's a good price worth bringing up!
Suggesting I consciously wanted to dock it just because "it's old" would be morally reprehensible. I wouldn't be okay with myself if I had some agenda like that when I wrote any sort of review, Quake or not. AND retro shooters (and boomer shooters in general) are basically my favorite corner of gaming haha. Half the games I play in my free time these days fall under that category, you should see my Steam Deck list of installed games!
@JB_Whiting Definitely familiar with Quake. Been playing the series since the first one was considered "new" haha. And like I mentioned, more or less constantly playing a retro/boomer shooter of some sort basically at any point I'm gaming!
@PixelDragon It's okay, it didn't read as vitriolic, it's just not one I was content with letting go by haha. I probably could have phrased it more strongly in the "pros" list though. In the body of the article I do call the price "impressively low" so it's a little more positive there at least!
And honestly, it's fine to leave the comment haha, it opened up a dialogue! So I don't personally have an issue with it staying.
@gbanas92 OK awesome thanks for the clarification!
@JB_Whiting No problemo!
I got this Quake II: Remaster on PS5. I overall love it buuuuut. It's got some issues.
1. I'm a gyro aiming enthusiasts (lexclusively a proficient motion aim user). I exclusively use gyro aim in shooters that support it to a quality standard. If a game doesn't have it, my motto is "no gyro no buyro" (on consoles anyways). While, this game has serviceable gyro aim and I'm grateful its there. It is lacking one serious key feature for it. That is a deadzone adjustment slider for the gyro aiming. So, the player can raise or lower the deazone for themselves to get a tighter feel. Based on thier sensitivity and other factors. Quake II Remaster has a atrocious deadzone while using gyro aim that can't be adjusted currently. Which is unfortunate.
While the deadzone is probably okay for novice user who just sees it as a silly gimmick and doesnt know the powerful tool it can be if correctly optimized and dialed in by the player to have a tight 1:1 accurate feel.That allows you to go head to head w/ mouse and keyboard users directly without the need for aim assist when implemented correctly. The deadzone in this game for gyro is so bad it hinders that feel as you cannot make micro adjustments while aiming becauseof this issue. It just won't pick it up. I've learned to play around the deadzone which is annoying because gyro should be a 1:1 feel for the player. Becaulse of this deadzone you may not be able to put your hands where they want to go naturally. Which makes it feel a bit less responsive than it should even with aim smoothing off. A lot of gyro users are frustrated by it, including myself. You have to think about hand placement more than you should. Instead of mainly focusing on the action and enjoying it. I still think it works okay, but a deadzone adjustment slider or scale would really let gyro users skilled and unskilled have a better experience. I still win lots of PvP though. Even with the gimped gyro that's currently in the game. Many gyro players are complaining about this.
Problem 2: No dedicated servers. People start losing get salty and quit. The whole lobby instantly shutdown if that player was the host. There should be a few dedicated servers.
Problem 3. Left handed players such as myself cannot switch the look stick to the left stick. I had to go into system settings on PS5 and swap things around. Should be a standard feature by now. There are plenty of lefties that play shooters and videogames in general. Quake II as a remaster should have this.
Also, the game should allow you to set the crosshair type for each individual weapon. As it stands right now. The game supports many crosshairs. It only let's you select one and uses it for every weapon you pick up. I found I like different crosshairs for different weapons. As it was more visually satisfying and put the weapon type in better perspective for me. this should be added in.
As far as the campaign goes. It was all pretty fun. The new campaign "Call of the Machine" I enjoyed, but sometimes enemies felt hella spongey and it dragged on a bit. I like the quicker weapon swap though. That should be implemented across the entire game. Waiting for weapons to fully cool down before changing them is annoying especially in PvP modes.
