It’s been a long time since Shadows of the Damned dropped — 13 years, in fact. The game industry has changed substantially in that time, but a good game is still a good game. And that’s what we’re lucky enough to encounter here with Shadows of the Damned Hella Remastered.
Narratively, this gonzo world from the mind of Suda51 doesn’t hold your hand, throwing you into the thick of things, only later providing the means of catching up. You can even hop into the freshly added new game+ mode.
Mechanically, this title about a demon hunter who ventures into great darkness to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend is an unhinged blast. It’s a third-person shooter with fun and unique guns; you also get access to an array of upgrades and a melee system that feels more complex than it looks at first blush. Our only major gripe with the gameplay is the camera. It’s far too zoomed in, making for claustrophobic environments where having the breathing room to see the numerous directions that enemies approach from would have been preferable.
The game features wild European-influenced locales, mixing cabaret with traces of expressionism in a way that makes the illogic of the world logical. Plus, thanks largely to the rise of 4K TVs — and especially HDR — the game looks better than it ever has. The staccato outbursts of colour when you illuminate the dark or enter select regions help to sell the oppressive nature of the environment. The title was from an era where drab colour schemes and chromatic aberration were the all rage, so there’s not as much use of colour to see with fresh eyes as we would have hoped.
Throw in the crisp texture work — blended with less impressive ones — and rock-solid performance with modern resolutions and frame rate, and you’ve got a winner.

I was worried that some of the Trophy names would be tampered with, but really pleased that they are all intact! A small thing, but definitely welcome to see!! 😅
I hated this on ps3 can't remember it being popular very bizzare release
Magnifico!! Hope this sells well enough for Suda and Mikami to go back and work something out with Killer7!!!
Played this back in the day on PS3 and liked it.
If i were to sum it up in a few words: It's a good game to play once. You won't feel the need to do so again.
Have a physical copy pre-ordered from Limited Run. Never played the game before, looking forward to it whenever it arrives.
I had a copy of this game on the PS3 but never played it. I’ll probably pick this one up. How are the trophies and the platinum trophy?
I was worried about censorship, but it seems like that stuff was untouched
Happy to buy, but im am still working through metaphor so will be on hold to play
Played this on PS3 and was wildly unimpressed. Forgot about it almost as soon as I popped the plat. I’ll be passing on this release.
"Ho-ho, now THAT is a big boner" - Garcia Hotspur, 2013
Enjoyed this one, much more than Lollipop Chainsaw. Not sure I need to play it again though... maybe the re-remaster in 10 years.
Great game, Johnson is hilarious!!
Love this game! So happy it got a re-release. Fun, wacky and bloody.
@Cal_ A majority of Suda 51 games all have this bizarre vibe to em, but that's exactly it's main appeal.
I still have my PS3 copy so i probably gonna skip it.
Funnily, 3-4 days ago i finished Travis Strikes Again and was surprised to see it has Shadow of the Damned world and the story feels like a sequel.
Really enjoyed this game, I thought the recent Evil West had vibes like this but not quite as bonkers! More Suda please
And yet no Call of Duty review on this site.....why could it be....🤔
@Major_Player oh yeah...CoD...
I'll pick this up someday!
@Kraven The trophies are the same as the PS3 version.. so it won't be too bad. You have to beat the game on hard mode, but with the newly added NG+ that shouldn't be an issue. I'd probably say a 3-4/10
Loved this game on PS3, but if I'd ever want to play it for the third time, I'll do it again on PS3.
I got every single achievement back on the 360. That meant playing through the game on each difficulty. From memory that was 4 playthroughs, but there was also the hardest difficulty, for which there was no achievement, and I did that run too. 5 in total and for me, it was one of the best games of the PS360 era.
Cannot wait to jump into it once again. I wonder whether the difficulty trophies stack this time...? 🤔
Oh no, my finger slipped on the pre-order button. What a shame...
Love this game and love Suda 51. Demon pubes FTW
Not calling shenanigans or anything but that's the most ai sounding review I've ever read 🤣
Love this game. I was always tiptoeing around hooking up the PS3 to play it again but now I don't have to hurray!
I really liked the game back in the day but after doing multiple play throughs for the plattie I kind of never want to play shadow of the damned again.
Shadows Of The Damned is a cool game from my PS3 experience of it. It doesn't warrant a Day 1 purchase, although that is tempting. I will buy and enjoy further along the line. I just hope, this leads to Killer7 on modern hardware, remaster or not, it doesn't matter, for that game is true art, and an instant Day 1 purchase, Suda on top form - is art in gaming.
Looks pretty good but the part where he keeps saying taste my big boner is still annoying lol. I hope I don't get in trouble for saying this 😅
