World War Z: Aftermath, the manic zombie shooter, has finally made its way to PS5 alongside its long-awaited XL version of Horde Mode. This movie tie-in has become a real sleeper-hit after it launched to middling reviews back in 2019. But several updates later, and we have a solid third-person co-op experience that has outlived most of its competition.
For those unfamiliar with this title, you’ll face off against impressive waves of zombies across its globe-trotting campaign in teams of four. Springing off both the book and the 2013 blockbuster, World War Z features the ant-like zombie swarms that pile over each other to scale walls and fences. It was an impressive sight to behold when it launched on PS4, and it’s even more so now on PS5, thanks to Horde Mode XL.
The PS5 version, which is free to those that own the Aftermath edition of the game, arrived on 24th January and we’ve been testing it out since then. Sadly, the game's performance hasn’t seen the boost we hoped for, as we experienced consistent frame rate drops on both offline and online modes. There are no performance modes to switch between so until developer Saber Interactive finds a fix, you are stuck with a fluctuating frame rate. It's never gets bad enough to put us off playing, but it's disheartening to see performance get worse with what should be an upgrade.
Along with all of the post-launch content, though, WWZ also includes the newly beefed-up Horde Mode XL, which ups the zombies waves from 500 to 1,000 on screen at any one time. Horde Mode XL works the same as before, but with every fifth wave tagged as an XL wave. It’s super impressive to see it in action, despite the aforementioned frame rate issues. XL waves in the higher rounds are genuinely daunting, and playing with friends makes the zombie onslaughts all the more hectic and enjoyable.
The absurdity of World War Z's Horde Mode XL is certainly worth checking out, and for newcomers it has a fun campaign to shoot your way through, too. As a PS5 upgrade, it's supremely disappointing to experience worse performance than what came before, but it isn't quite enough to spoil the fun we had spraying bullets into piles of zombies.

I think it'd be fair to mention that there's a rampant bug with the update that makes the update NOT actually free for PS4 disc owners who are now trying to play on PS5. They are aware of it since the update dropped and have provided fixes for other bugs, but weirdly, not the one that may entice/trick owners into dropping another $40 on the game they already own.
It's all over the community discussion boards.
@MFTWrecks I ran into this bug when I tried to upgrade once the PS5 version went live, but they fixed it the next day and I was able to upgrade for no charge. Is the bug still happening to you/others?
I guess I should pay horde mode to see if I actually have the update. There's nothing on the store to download. I have the digital version so I'm not sure. Fun game though to anyone wondering.
Apart from the initial difficulty in upgrading i've experienced none of the issues mentioned..i switched over to first person mode in the options so it plays more like left 4 dead and i have not seen any frame rate drops..but then i'm probably enjoying myself too much to be nit pickey...its a free update ffs..🙄
@pyrrhic_victory Yup. I uninstalled and reinstalled it and everything. Still asking me for $40 for the PS5 edition while it says I own Aftermath.
@MFTWrecks when i reinstalled it and moved down on the ps5 desktop there was a box that said free ps5 update..i didnt go through the store again as it kept showing £34.99 but i managed it off the main ps5 screen..hope this helps 👍
World War Z is a good game
@trev666 it is indeed especially in the new first person mode..awesome fun..
The fact that this doesn't perform better alone, along with a host of other widespread issues ps5 players are mentioning, has changed my mind in giving it a try.
Thanks for the heads up.
@KundaliniRising333 in all fairness i think push square are making a mountain out of a mole hill here..if the issues were as bad as they are making out i would have said. They didnt even mention the new first person mode or the fact you can change the fov now..makes me wonder if they were actually playing the ps5 version or installed the ps4 one by mistake.
@Northern_munkey It doesn't. I know how to use my PS5. It is not available, no matter where I attempt it (PS5, PS5 store, app, web store).
I wasnt insinuating you didnt know how to use your ps5 lol. I was trying to help out but i know not to bother in future 👍
@Northern_munkey yeah I hear you. I don't usually ever go off of just push Square on anything. I mean the trend toward usually over inflating all things PlayStation in a positive light is enough for me to know that you're not always getting the most honest unbiased commentary. I actually looked it up in general to see if there was a consensus in the online world as far as how it performs and that's where I saw that there was a ton of articles and redd it forums citing performance issues with this new PS5 version. that's kind of where I came to the overall conclusion.
@KundaliniRising333 fair enough bud. I'm not saying the games perfect but after playing a fair bit with a couple of mates we cant really fault it. I guess its a try it and see thing..
Message for developers:
With so many FPS, top-down shooters and 3rd person shooters for PS5 owners (PS1 and PS2 remasters, streamable PS3 classics, basically ALL PS4 games, and PS5 games), what IS IT that sets apart the games that PS5 owners buy vs. those they don’t?
—It is the DualSense trigger mechanism, Skippy! THAT is the game changer that XBox ain’t got. It’s what makes modern games immersive.
Without meaningful DualSense integration in the game, you just got plain old vanilla ice cream, man. No offense, I like vanilla ice cream and I eat plenty of it, but you’re more likely to get my coin if you put that chocolate syrup and the cherry on top…and that’s what DualSense integration is—it’s the chocolate syrup and the cherry. I might end up getting this game because I’ve been wanting to give it a try, but there are some other really tempting dessert options in that PS store.
@jgrangervikings1, Interesting, but now I desire a bowl of French Vanilla with syrup, a cherry, and crushed nuts. All I have are 2 jars of nuts 😫.
@NoCode23 Just wait for the PS6. It’ll be nuts!
Is there fun to be had in the single player campaign?
Considering giving this one a go...(not a PS+ subscriber)
