Re: Dev Irate About 'Illegal' Use of Its Property As AI Rip Off of Xbox Game Appears on PS Store

nessisonett

@EfYI I’d be inclined to agree if he didn’t have previous using AI generated images for cover images on articles. It’s not personal, I have a bone to pick with the entire practice of generative AI from my time working for those absolute ghouls and I’d rather it was completely stamped out because if you give an inch then liberties will be taken. To be perfectly honest, there will only be action taken if it’s public, the aforementioned AI generated image debacle was brushed completely under the carpet, edited and removed in a fashion that made the users commenting on it at the time look insane to those who came afterwards. As long as there’s guarantees that this sort of thing will not happen again then that’s enough.

Re: Video Game Industry Caught in a 'Vicious Circle of Death and Rebirth', Says Helldivers Boss

nessisonett

Safe bets are pretty much impossible in an industry like this, especially with tastes changing faster than development times. If ideas are backed and devs are given time then that’s how we get good games. The industry’s still too caught up in sales figures anyway, most of the best movies I’ve ever seen made barely any money but the world is better for them existing. Some movies are made and the critical acclaim is the reward, games don’t have prestigious enough awards yet to justify pushing the artform beyond what current audiences are ready for.

Re: Iconic Game Maker Says Japanese Devs Should Stop Trying to Appeal to Westerners

nessisonett

I’m assuming it’s a sort of clumsy translation (Japanese to English often is) and that Sakurai isn’t quite saying a variation of ENGERLAND FOR THE ENGERLISH or something. There’s definitely something to be said for Japanese developed games having a specific flavour but then we’ve all been a bit guilty of going ‘wow look how zany and wacky they are’ at times which can be a bit infantilising. I’m not going to begrudge Japanese devs for being inspired by Western media (Kojima is a prime example) and to be honest, I feel like the big Japanese devs have left behind that chasing the Western market thing they did in the 2010s with Resi Operation Raccoon City, the DmC reboot etc. Part of that was Western devs getting a shot at Japanese IPs though, Double Helix did both Silent Hill Homecoming and Strider for example. The reverse would be cool to see, not often they trust Western IPs to Japanese studios.

Re: Amazon Bullish on God of War, Two Seasons Have Already Been Ordered

@Gr8VngnzN4esAngr The problem with Rings of Power isn’t faithfulness to the books, it’s that it bored me to tears. There’s no pleasing Tolkien ‘fans’ and the changes Peter Jackson made would have caused death threats if those movies came out today. The Hobbit was even more egregious but those movies still came out too soon for the chuds to attack.

Re: Ubisoft Will Reportedly Fight for Assassin's Creed Shadows, Anti-Harassment Plan in Place

nessisonett

It’s mad that it’s come to this but with mouthbreathers like Grummz around then it’s necessary. The game was never going to get a fair shake from racists, anti-woke, whatever you want to call them. With lawyers involved then it’s only feasible that they’d be going after the death threats and other serious stuff, going that far for anything frivolous is too much effort.

Re: Horizon Dev Promises It Isn't Trying to Replace Aloy Actress with AI

nessisonett

@heavyartillery56 It’s hard to even respond to such a simplistic view of the world. I’m not sure what you even mean by ‘ruling the world’ for starters; while espousing capitalism as a driver of ‘growth and progress’ (two vague terms with little meaning here) would then imply that ‘the West’ cannot actually adopt AI, only specific megacorporations within the West that governments would have no control over in your strange fantasy. If ‘the West’ was to adopt AI then that would really be a socialist policy involving government intervention in private business and some sort of centralised rolling out of a state-sponsored AI model. Of course, this is implying that you understand anything beyond Western exceptionalism and the slightly tragic faith that wealth would trickle down from the three quadrillionaires on Earth created by such a dystopia.

Re: Horizon Dev Promises It Isn't Trying to Replace Aloy Actress with AI

@Bagwag82 The reality is late stage capitalism encourages constant growth, which combined with the semitruth of unlimited free labour will create mass unemployment as companies race to the bottom. Except the DWP has been replaced by an algorithm and case workers are now an overly chipper chat bot that sends emojis as your claim is denied during the one day of the year that the service isn’t down for maintenance. If the rapid adoption of AI in the workplace doesn’t actually benefit anybody except shareholders and leaves everyone below middle management out of work then we don’t have to do it. Just because we can doesn’t mean that we have to. What is it all actually for. It needs to be stamped out with zero tolerance or everything will burn down eventually anyway, you can’t train a workforce quickly enough to pivot to other roles maintaining these systems. It’ll be the mines closing but for literally everyone.

Re: Horizon Dev Promises It Isn't Trying Replace Aloy Actress with AI

Taking humanities classes should be made mandatory for anybody studying in the computing field these days. The sheer lack of understanding of the human condition coming from new graduates in fields like AI is a major root of the issue, they believe that humans are replaceable in every situation. Voice acting is give and take, the actors often pour just as much of themselves into the role as they’re provided by the director, which AI text-to-speech cannot do. Our souls are reflected in the art we produce and it’s horrifying to see the glee which advocates of AI show as they push for the enshittification of every single good thing humanity touches.

Re: Silent Hill F Revealed for PS5 in Debut Trailer

nessisonett

@tameshiyaku That’s a common misconception about The Room not being a Silent Hill game originally! Story goes that it was going to be a non-numbered entry to emphasise that it’s a bit different but Team Silent always meant it to be part of the series, just that corporate thought the number 4 would make it sell more copies. It’s a great game but I do think that it hits the same grungy vibe that the main entries share. It’s mostly a feeling that I’m not really getting from this trailer but there’s a whole game to prove me wrong.

Re: Silent Hill F Revealed for PS5 in Debut Trailer

nessisonett

@tameshiyaku I’m not advocating for Pyramid Head in every game because that’s insane. But the first 4 games all relate to either the town or the cult in some way and deviation from that is when the series started to go off the rails. It feels a little like this game started development as one thing and had the name slapped on for brand recognition. It still looks good but I do wonder the difference in trailer views if it was a Fatal Frame game instead.

Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Cinematic Trailer Sets Scene for Sengoku Action

nessisonett

Had a weird feeling reading parts of this article (pretty sure everybody knows I worked with AI by now) and yeah, 5 out of 6 of the AI detectors I checked flagged the two paragraphs about Nobunaga as roughly 100% AI generated and 1 as 79% AI generated. There’s a specific tone and cantor of these models’ output, overuse of the rule of three being a major one. Plus the use of “Alexander” rather than Alexander the Great, the most common name we know him by but one that a model could misconstrue as a biased title that they’d avoid using.

This isn’t some sort of massive callout or anything, it’s just disappointing and not the first time this has happened with the whole AI generated header image mysteriously vanishing with no acknowledgement after being pointed out. I assume that you asked ChatGPT for facts about Nobunaga and that’s the output, whereas previously writers would just reword the Wikipedia article or something. I would give you the benefit of the doubt because false positives happen but that’s why I made sure to check multiple detectors and its fairly damning. We come to sites like this because we engage with the writer’s voice and personal touches, not to have a chatbot barf out articles. Please nip this in the bud before it gets as bad as TheGamer or other slop sites.

Re: Sony Banned Jonah Hill from Playing PlayStation in Superbad

nessisonett

Superbad’s an interesting one in that several jokes land well and then some really don’t. It’s a relic these days, a specific period of time encased in amber. I can understand why a certain generation would identify with it but I also get why teenagers these days would struggle to see themselves in the situations with just how different things are.

Re: Don't Hold Your Breath for Super Impressive Sims-Like InZOI on PS5

nessisonett

There’s a very good reason these sorts of games typically haven’t come to console or are heavily gimped - they just do not suit the specific skill set that consoles provide and optimising them can be a challenge given how CPU heavy the simulation aspect can be. It’s basically been an added bonus having Civ, Crusader Kings, Football Manager and Anno on consoles this last gen, we’re getting to an impasse where either the series will have to dumb down or change engine to a more console-oriented setup, or just wait for the next generation of consoles if they want to really push PCs this generation.

Re: Rumour: Oblivion PS5 Remake Is Out Soon, Possibly Even Next Month

nessisonett

Oblivion holds a special place in my heart in that it was my first introduction to that sort of RPG at a young age, watching my dad be atrocious at it. That being said, it’s probably the weakest of the 3 modern Elder Scrolls games, the setting is more generic and it’s insanely janky. This would be a nice surprise if leakers didn’t ruin everything but then they’ve been ‘leaking’ a Final Fantasy IX remake for about 6 years now too.
