Author Profile

As the Editor of Push Square, Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation, from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between. He’s an expert on PS Studios and industry matters, as well as sports games and simulators. He also enjoys RPGs when he has the time to dedicate to them, and is a bit of a gacha whale.

I've been passionate about video games since I was at primary school, printing off Nintendo-themed newsletters to share with my pals on the playground. I love the escapism that only video games can provide, and I enjoy sharing my passion for the industry with anyone and everyone who will listen!

Experience

Sammy founded Push Square as a personal project while studying Business and Computing at Birmingham City University in 2009. Although he’d made several websites in the past, he wanted to create something more contemporary to demonstrate his abilities to future employers.

He enjoyed working on Push Square so much that he was able to turn it into a full-time job after graduating, and when the site was eventually integrated into Hookshot Media in 2012! As Editor, Sammy is responsible for the day-to-day running of Push Square, and he continues to contribute news, reviews, guides and features to the site.

I love sharing my passion for video games, and specifically PlayStation, with the rest of the world. There's no other entertainment medium that gives me butterflies of excitement quite like gaming does, and it's a dream come true to be able to engage others and share my enthusiasm with like-minded fans.

Timeline

  • 2009: Launches Push Square as a personal project while studying for a Business and Computing degree.
  • 2012: Begins working with Nintendo Life’s Editor as Associate Editor, helping to transition Push Square from a personal project to a fully-fledged professional website.
  • 2013: Becomes full-time Editor of Push Square, responsible for growing the profile of the website and increasing the footprint of its team.

Qualifications & Awards

  • 2011 - BSc 1st Class Hons Business Information Technology with Multimedia (Birmingham City University)

Expertise

Sammy’s gaming journey began with the Super Nintendo and SEGA Mega Drive consoles, both of which his family owned during his younger years. The first console he personally owned was the Game Boy, followed by a long line of systems from the Nintendo 64 right through to the PlayStation 5.

Sammy’s favourite console of all-time is the Dreamcast, thanks largely to its timeless games. The PS1 remains his favourite PlayStation though, due to its expansive library and the path it plotted from the 2D to the 3D eras through iconic games like Resident Evil and Crash Bandicoot.

I have many favourite game genres, but I'd say I enjoy the Action RPG above all others! I like the sense of progression that RPGs provide, and I enjoy action-based gameplay with fun combat systems that feel satisfying to play.

Sammy’s Favourite Games

Shenmue 1 & 2 (PS4):

I played these games first on Dreamcast, of course, but was delighted to revisit them in high definition on the PS4. These two titles proved to me that games can have engaging narratives, and I remain obsessed with its life simulation elements - the fact that you can explore the world, go where you want, and use your time in any way you like.

Resident Evil 4 (PS2):

I’m listing the original PS2 release here, but of course the PS4 remake is excellent as well. This Capcom masterpiece changed the third-person shooter forever with its taut gunplay and great controls. It’s also just a fantastic adventure, with tons of iconic moments and set-pieces.

Shadow of the Colossus (PS2):

Again, I’m listing the PS2 original, but the PS3 re-release and PS4 remakes are also outstanding. While Shenmue proved to me that games can compete with movies when it comes to engaging narratives, this game showed me it’s possible to tell stories in a different way. Team ICO’s classic conveys emotion through interaction, and it’s a unique experience for that.

From the Archive

We asked Sammy to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

Feature: Exploring Taiwan's Underground Gaming Scene:

I'm obsessed with video games and find ways to incorporate them into everything I do. Writing this piece about Taiwan's very unique underground gaming scene was a joy, and I was so overwhelmed by the feedback I received.

Feature: Tokyo Game Show Was Everything I Expected, And Somehow More:

I'd read about Tokyo Game Show in magazines, but actually getting to physically attend was a career highlight. I was really proud of how I was able to sum up the sights and sounds of the event in this article.

GTA Online Guide: Your Ultimate Wiki and Walkthrough Resource:

I spent hundreds of hours learning the ins-and-outs of one of the PS5 and PS4's most popular games in order to produce this GTA Online guide. I think it provides a great starting point for anyone looking to get into the multiplayer sandbox mode.

  • News Yakuza: Dead Souls Unwinds with Pachinko

Even the Yakuza need a break

The Yakuza franchise has always been stacked with goofy mini-games, and you’d be foolish to think that a zombie epidemic would break that trend. No, the upcoming Yakuza: Dead Souls will be packed to the brim with quirky distractions such as fishing, table-tennis and, erm, pachinko. And yes, for those curious, all of...

  • News Fresh Amazing Spider-Man Footage Swings Online

    Web slinger

Spider-Man 2 is by far one of our favourite PlayStation 2 games. The open-world action title was phenomenally well polished compared to the production values of most other movie tie-ins, and so we’re hoping that Activision and Beenox’s upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man reboot can match up to the quality of its licensed predecessor. It...

  • News Tretton: "I'd be Very Distracted by PS4 Announcement"

    SCEA boss not thinking ahead

Jack Tretton’s clearly been reading our Talking Point features. The SCEA boss recently made a comment to IGN regarding his stance on the PlayStation 4. Unsurprisingly, the executive's not looking to make any new hardware announcements this year, and is instead hoping to stay focused on Sony's current crop of consoles...

  • News Sony Staying Focused with Australia's PS Vita Launch

    Not everywhere, mate

In a move that probably makes business sense – but will surely play into the hands of the PS Vita’s doom patrons – Sony’s announced that it’s keeping the PS Vita’s Australian launch fairly focused, opting to stick with niche retailers rather than going for the jugular out of the gate. The company’s Aussie branch...

  • News Ready Your PlayStation 3 for Firmware Update 4.11

    Again

Budding Twitter critics rejoice: Sony’s announced a new firmware update for the PlayStation 3. The minor – dare we say meaningless – download bumps the hardware up to version 4.11 and brings with it improvements to “certain aspects of system software”. Not a lot, then. Bizarrely, the update’s optional in North America and...

  • News Mortal Kombat Vita Takes Gore on the Go

    Finish him anywhere

We’re still finding PlayStation Vita trailers a little jarring. Take this latest Mortal Kombat footage released by publisher Warner Bros: it looks like a PlayStation 3 game. If it wasn’t for all the crazy augmented reality stuff – which is a neat addition to the fighter by the way – we’d still be struggling to remind...

  • News NFL Blitz the Top Selling PSN Download in January

    Handball?

We’re not willing to risk losing an enormous chunk of our readership by saying derogatory things about American Football, so instead we’ll get straight to the point: EA’s hastily published NFL Blitz has done alright for itself in 2012’s inaugural PSN best-sellers list, beating out fellow arcade sports rival, erm, NBA Jam: On Fire...

  • News Sony Ericsson Becomes Sony Mobile Communications

    Modern times

Sony has announced that it has finalised its takeover of Ericsson, and renamed the mobile area of its business to the rather snazzy (but generic) Sony Mobile Communications in the process. The Japanese giant says that the takeover will allow the company to “further integrate the mobile phone business” into its electronics...

  • News God of War IV Evidence Mounts

    Call a plumber

God of War IV rumours are becoming as regular as clockwork. The latest leak comes courtesy of the online resume of House of Moves animator David Thornfield, which referenced the unannounced title. Official PlayStation Magazine picked up on the listing before it was promptly removed. Animation studio House of Moves has contributed to a...

  • Review Grand Slam Tennis 2 (PlayStation 3)

    Serving up a winner?

Grand Slam Tennis 2 has the daunting task of following up last year’s brace of solid tennis titles. Both Virtua Tennis 4 and Top Spin 4 hold a racquet-like grip on the two opposing formats of the tennis genre: Virtua Tennis with its slick arcade action and Top Spin with its challenging simulation focus. It’s unsurprising,...

  • News Get a Glimpse of Modern Warfare 3's Overwatch Map

    Taking it to the rooftop

Skip past this trailer’s lousy attempt at humour and you’ll be rewarded with a first look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s latest DLC map. Dubbed Overwatch, the stage takes place in a construction site atop a New York skyscraper – which even the cynics have to admit sounds pretty neat. We’d love to give you a...

  • News Rayman Origins Actually Made Ubisoft Some Money

    Not quite a commercial distaster

When Rayman Origins failed to even break into the UK software top-forty following its launch in November last year, many suspected the worst for the gorgeous Michel Ancel developed platformer. But contrary to perception, the title has actually been profitable for publisher Ubisoft, and it believes that it will...

  • News Assassin's Creed: Revelations to Get Desmond DLC

A new set of achievements – uncovered by, erm, XBOX360A – references block-based platforming, suggesting there’s more modern day Desmond content on the cards. Naturally, no release date or pricing for the downloadable...

  • Review Need For Speed: The Run (PlayStation 3)

    Run down

Need For Speed: The Run is a brilliant idea, but the game's bogged down by some iffy technical issues and frustrating AI. There's a lot to like about The Run — it's well presented and technically impressive — but its quirks will prevent you from returning despite its excellent Autolog implementation and decent track design. The last...

  • News Binary Domain Trailer Makes a Case for Native Voice Acting

    Cringe worthy

The Yakuza franchise gets away with its daft dialogue and silly plotlines because SEGA doesn’t even bother hiring voice-actors anymore. (We’re ignoring Eliza Dushku’s turn in the original title for obvious reasons.) It’s a shame, then, that SEGA hasn’t extended the same faith to Binary Domain – a title developed by the...

  • Review Driver: San Francisco (PlayStation 3)

    Dreamy

Driver: San Francisco is eccentric but brilliant, carving a slapstick narrative around its complex mechanics. The game's prominent gameplay feature, 'Shift', not only introduces a new way to play, but also opens a window into developer Reflections' creativity, offering objectives that are not only extremely enjoyable but also wilfully...

The snazzy handheld – which releases worldwide next week – managed to sell just 13,939 units, its lowest...
