Author Profile

As the Editor of Push Square, Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation, from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between. He’s an expert on PS Studios and industry matters, as well as sports games and simulators. He also enjoys RPGs when he has the time to dedicate to them, and is a bit of a gacha whale.

I've been passionate about video games since I was at primary school, printing off Nintendo-themed newsletters to share with my pals on the playground. I love the escapism that only video games can provide, and I enjoy sharing my passion for the industry with anyone and everyone who will listen!

Experience

Sammy founded Push Square as a personal project while studying Business and Computing at Birmingham City University in 2009. Although he’d made several websites in the past, he wanted to create something more contemporary to demonstrate his abilities to future employers.

He enjoyed working on Push Square so much that he was able to turn it into a full-time job after graduating, and when the site was eventually integrated into Hookshot Media in 2012! As Editor, Sammy is responsible for the day-to-day running of Push Square, and he continues to contribute news, reviews, guides and features to the site.

I love sharing my passion for video games, and specifically PlayStation, with the rest of the world. There's no other entertainment medium that gives me butterflies of excitement quite like gaming does, and it's a dream come true to be able to engage others and share my enthusiasm with like-minded fans.

Timeline

  • 2009: Launches Push Square as a personal project while studying for a Business and Computing degree.
  • 2012: Begins working with Nintendo Life’s Editor as Associate Editor, helping to transition Push Square from a personal project to a fully-fledged professional website.
  • 2013: Becomes full-time Editor of Push Square, responsible for growing the profile of the website and increasing the footprint of its team.

Qualifications & Awards

  • 2011 - BSc 1st Class Hons Business Information Technology with Multimedia (Birmingham City University)

Expertise

Sammy’s gaming journey began with the Super Nintendo and SEGA Mega Drive consoles, both of which his family owned during his younger years. The first console he personally owned was the Game Boy, followed by a long line of systems from the Nintendo 64 right through to the PlayStation 5.

Sammy’s favourite console of all-time is the Dreamcast, thanks largely to its timeless games. The PS1 remains his favourite PlayStation though, due to its expansive library and the path it plotted from the 2D to the 3D eras through iconic games like Resident Evil and Crash Bandicoot.

I have many favourite game genres, but I'd say I enjoy the Action RPG above all others! I like the sense of progression that RPGs provide, and I enjoy action-based gameplay with fun combat systems that feel satisfying to play.

Sammy’s Favourite Games

Shenmue 1 & 2 (PS4):

I played these games first on Dreamcast, of course, but was delighted to revisit them in high definition on the PS4. These two titles proved to me that games can have engaging narratives, and I remain obsessed with its life simulation elements - the fact that you can explore the world, go where you want, and use your time in any way you like.

Resident Evil 4 (PS2):

I’m listing the original PS2 release here, but of course the PS4 remake is excellent as well. This Capcom masterpiece changed the third-person shooter forever with its taut gunplay and great controls. It’s also just a fantastic adventure, with tons of iconic moments and set-pieces.

Shadow of the Colossus (PS2):

Again, I’m listing the PS2 original, but the PS3 re-release and PS4 remakes are also outstanding. While Shenmue proved to me that games can compete with movies when it comes to engaging narratives, this game showed me it’s possible to tell stories in a different way. Team ICO’s classic conveys emotion through interaction, and it’s a unique experience for that.

From the Archive

We asked Sammy to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

Feature: Exploring Taiwan's Underground Gaming Scene:

I'm obsessed with video games and find ways to incorporate them into everything I do. Writing this piece about Taiwan's very unique underground gaming scene was a joy, and I was so overwhelmed by the feedback I received.

Feature: Tokyo Game Show Was Everything I Expected, And Somehow More:

I'd read about Tokyo Game Show in magazines, but actually getting to physically attend was a career highlight. I was really proud of how I was able to sum up the sights and sounds of the event in this article.

GTA Online Guide: Your Ultimate Wiki and Walkthrough Resource:

I spent hundreds of hours learning the ins-and-outs of one of the PS5 and PS4's most popular games in order to produce this GTA Online guide. I think it provides a great starting point for anyone looking to get into the multiplayer sandbox mode.

  • Interview Version2Games - Smash 'N' Survive

    Fender bender

Car combat is staging a comeback. It’s not just Twisted Metal that’s set to drop onto PlayStation 3 this month, but also Version2Games’ Smash ‘N’ Survive, an explosive vehicular combat title that’s breaking new ground of its own. Indeed, the launch of Smash ‘N’ Survive will mark the first time an Indian developed game...

  • Review Limbo (PlayStation 3)

    Heaven or hell?

An enchanting and minimal experience, Limbo is absolutely essential. Limbo's minimalism presents itself from the outset. The opening is bereft of button prompts and exposition, settling for a delightfully simplistic title screen and an opening in which our protagonist — a silhouette of a small boy with radiating white eyes —...

  • News Take One Last Tour of the PlayStation Vita

    Not long now

The PlayStation Vita unofficially launches in North America this week. We say “unofficially” because, well, even though the so-called First Edition Bundle is sanctioned by platform holder Sony, the system’s launch date will officially go down in history as February 22nd. It’s all a bit confusing, but the point is, Sony's eagerly...

  • News Rocksteady Considered Multiplayer for Arkham City

    No, I’m the Batman

Dedicated single-player experiences have become a rarity this generation, but Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham City represents one of the few remaining beacons. That wasn’t always the case, however, as game director Sefton Hill has revealed that the studio did consider adding a multiplayer component to the superhero adventure for...

  • News Namco to Co-publish Star Trek Next Year

Digital Extreme’s exciting PlayStation Move supported Star Trek title has got a new publisher and release date. The title will now find itself rocketing onto store shelves in early 2013, shortly before J. J. Abram’s next big theatrical release. It’ll be handled by Namco Bandai, who’s signed a co-publishing and distribution...

  • News Shuhei Yoshida Thought Demon's Souls Was Rubbish

    Sony’s biggest mistake

Not many people know, but Demon’s Souls was actually a Sony published product in Japan. The rock-hard fantasy adventure game – which went on to spawn a cult fanbase across the globe – could have been Sony’s next big franchise; unfortunately, the platform holder thought it was a bit rubbish. In an interview with Game...

  • News Sony Places Santa Monica Founder in Charge of Japan Studios

    Western efficiency

Japanese developers have not handled the transition into high-definition particularly well. Development hell and exaggerated cycles have become common-place for many of Japan’s biggest exports. That’s left a lot of the region’s biggest publishers looking for a solution. See, while Japan’s been spending five years rebooting...

  • Review God of War Collection (PlayStation 3)

    God of before

Love him or hate him, Kratos is an important part of the PlayStation brand. The vengeful antihero has starred in some of the platform’s very best titles, and the God of War Collection brings those classics back to life with startling clarity. Remastering PS2 favourites God of War and God of War II in beautiful high definition, the...

  • News The Last Guardian Is Still In Development, But Progress Is Slow

    Glimmer of hope

The Last Guardian is definitely still in development, Sony Worldwide Studios executive, Shuhei Yoshida, has assured 1Up. But there’s a caveat: progress is slow. Speaking at the DICE summit this week, Yoshida said: The project has been making progress, but slow progress. So that's tough, but we haven't changed any focus. It's still...

  • Review Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PlayStation 3)

    A master of its craft

This title may feel familiar, but its similarity is hard to criticise when the core components are this good. A speculative campaign and a freshly balanced multiplayer component headline Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and while the visual engine is looking a bit tired, its penchant for addictive gunplay remains unmatched...

  • News Sony Officially Acknowledges LittleBigPlanet Karting

    Burlapped

Sony’s finally popped the hood on “Play Create Share” racer, LittleBigPlanet Karting, after the title was leaked earlier in the week. Speaking on Twitter, the platform holder confirmed that the game is in development and that we should expect more information on the release soon. It’s still unclear who’s developing...

  • News Binary Domain Takes the Fight Online

    Connected chaos

We’re hopelessly excited for Binary Domain, we really are. But the online component’s pretty meaningless to us, and this trailer affirms our ambivalence. Sure the gun-play looks solid, the maps look cool and the game modes seem interesting; but is anyone really going to choose to play Binary Domain over Call of Duty or...

  • Review Battlefield 3 (PlayStation 3)

    Field of dreams

Battlefield 3's single player campaign checks all the required boxes, but fails to better the offerings of its competitors. Multiplayer is where the game finds its purpose, offering a raw experience that's both technically outstanding and masterfully balanced. EA promised the world during the build-ip to Battlefield 3's release. It...

  • News Mass Effect 3 Trailer Proves FemShep Is the Only Way to Play

    Sultry dialect

Mass Effect’s a good series if you play as the bog-standard bloke Shepard, but it’s even better when you open your eyes to FemShep. Lovingly named by fans of the franchise, FemShep is voiced by the wonderful Jennifer Hale, who brings new depth to the character beyond the rough and ready male alternative. Belatedly acknowledging...

  • News Lollipop Chainsaw Gets All Romantic

You don’t need a body to fall in love

Meet Juliet Starling and Nick Carlyle: high school darlings and prom couple royalty. Well, they were, until Nick totally got bitten by a zombie and Juliet was forced to chop off his head. Some might say it would be hard to hold onto a hot chick like Juliet without a body (chortle, chortle), but we reckon...

  • News Discover Frobisher Says and tag on PS Vita

    Tag the toffs

Of all the PlayStation Vita titles we’ve been lucky enough to sample, Honeyslug’s delightfully daft Frobisher Says stands head and shoulders above the rest. The curious mix of WarioWare and Rhythmn Heaven utilises Sony’s new handheld in some bafflingly imaginative ways, and it presents it in such an odd and assured manner that...

  • News Unreal Engine 4 Already Running on Next-Gen Consoles

    Pretty graphics

Epic Games’ outspoken gaffer, Mark Rein, dropped an unexpected bombshell during his speech at the DICE summit overnight. The executive – who oversees the Unreal Engine – said that the latest version of the middleware software was already functional on “systems can’t name yet”. Juicy, huh? It makes sense; Epic is usually...

  • News January NPD: Absence of Big Launches Leads to Low Sales

    Stuck in a rut

The latest NPD report – covering monthly spend for the video game industry in North America – didn’t paint a particularly promising picture for digital entertainment in January. Both hardware and software dropped 38% year over year, with sales down from $1.14 billion in January 2011 to just $750 million this past month. The NPD...

  • News Capcom Pushes Asura's Wrath Back

Avoids Binary Domain, faces Mass Effect 3

Capcom's curiously delayed the UK release of Asura's Wrath. The melodramatic actioner was previously due out on 24th February here in the UK. It’ll now go up against Mass Effect 3 on the 9th March. No reason was given for the delay, but we can’t imagine it has anything to do with strategic alignment...

  • Review Assassin's Creed: Revelations (PlayStation 3)

    Not very revelatory

Considering its subtitle, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is disappointingly light in this regard. While Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood managed to shatter our pre-conceptions last year, Revelations is the third series title in as many years, and it's starting to show. The mechanics that once felt new and interesting are...
