It’s no secret we’ve always had a soft spot for the Yakuza franchise here at Push Square; it’s a perennial favourite across our entire editorial team, with some of us even campaigning for the localisation of Yakuza 5 during that low-period, where SEGA relied on Sony to bring the PS3 game overseas.
Fortunately, the franchise has never been in a better spot, and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is another wonderful entry in the long-running series. While there’s still some debate over whether the franchise works best as a brawler or turn-based RPG, few would deny this is an outstanding game.
With its dual protagonist setup following the eternally optimistic Ichiban Kasuga and series stalwart Kazuma Kiryu to the new setting of Hawaii, this outing masterfully walks the tightrope between serious and silly.
While the narrative does feel a little contrived at times, it’s hard not to get caught up in all of the twists and turns, as you never can quite predict what’s going to happen next.
A vastly expanded job system sees you building your characters based on surfers, gunslingers, and even American football players (if you purchased the DLC, of course), so there’s much more depth to the turn-based combat this time.
And when you’re not in battle, there’s a never-ending list of things to do: restoring an island to its former glory in a massive Animal Crossing-inspired minigame; making connections with strangers over social media; collecting Sujimon and sending them into battle in a Pokémon-inspired side quest – this is a game you can lose yourself in for hundreds upon hundreds of hours.
Crucially of all, you’ll want to. The writing is sharp and laugh-out-loud funny throughout, while the characters are earnest and enjoyable to be around. This is RGG Studio proving it’s at the top of the game, and finally it’s being richly rewarded for its output, which has been fantastic for pushing two decades now.

A fun game but a weak main story and a bit too much bloat, even for a Yakuza game. But the two main protagonists are some of the best in gaming and work wonderfully alongside each other.
Minus points also awarded for locking the high XP dungeon behind DLC, making the grind for the top level trophy pretty infuriating without it.
Yeah fair enough i can see why it could be this high for people. I really should finish it.
I loved this game and it definitely deserves a top 3 spot. Loved all the team, Ichibans terrible love life and Kiryus walk down memory lane, and ive never been invested in a pokemon style minigame as much as i was in this game lol
I loved this game. Next to 7 and 0, Infinite Wealth is my favorite game in the series. The mad lads at RGG put a better Pokemon game in this than anything Game Freak has pumped out in ages.
@Thrillho "Minus points also awarded for locking the high XP dungeon behind DLC, making the grind for the top level trophy pretty infuriating without it."
I got the platinum and this was by far the worst part of it. It isn't noticeable if you don't go for the platinum or get a high level in the postgame, but when I realized what Sega did here, it pissed me off. Frustrating the player to strong-arm them into spending more money is unacceptable, especially for a $70 single-player game like this.
I really like the main cast (except I didn't like how they portrayed Saeko compared to Yakuza 7), humor, mini games, side quest etc in this game. But the main story definitely was a lot weaker than Yakuza 7s
Imma be honest, even with all the content and stuff I preferred the first Like a Dragon (7). The bonds and stories between the characters felt real and likable, now they separated the cast and made Ichiban and Saeko less likable.
I'm surprised that this even made the list at all, let alone third place of all things (4 spots ahead of Rebirth)
Honestly surprised this one isn’t higher, given this site’s history as basically the most prominent editorial champion for the series in the West.
This game is absolutely phenomenal. I actually have it #3 on my list (honestly 1-4 on my list are fairly interchangeable. Dunno how I'm supposed to rank Balatro in comparison to Infinite Wealth for instance).
I voted shouldn't be on the list, obviously that's my personal opinion as I find the series too silly and bloated. Maybe one day il try get back into it but ignore the side content.
Definitely a top 3. I'm not usually big on games with turn-based combat but Like a Dragon gets it right.
So Metaphor ReFantazio and Black Myth Wukong are #1 & #2 then. Wonder what the order will be!
A PS3 mechanics game is number 3 and Black Myth Wukong out of top 10, there are fewer and fewer interesting games thanks to the tastes of many people.
@Foxhound
You forgot Astrobot, I guess Black Myth Wukong is out of top 10.
@Fritz167 Oh dear, I did forget Astro Bot, thanks for the correction! Hard to believe BMW is completely out of the top 10...
@UltimateOtaku91 If that's how you feel then I'm pretty sure the series isn't for you, from my perspective thats some of the stuff that makes the series special.
I can't express enough how much i love this series. I'm actually a few games behind though now, I haven't played Gaiden yet, so Infinite Wealth is still on hold. Playing Ishin right now. With Pirate Yakuza next year I'll have three games.
Not a bad game and I did enjoy my time with it but the "power of friendship" is eurghhh. Supposed to be a gritty story that hits on hard or emotional subjects boiled down to an anime cliche. Also I don't like the disconnect that the class based combat gives me. Like what the hell is Nanba actually doing in these fights because he sure as **** isn't dressed as a host blasting people with champagne. This and the Pokémon like game, like is this real or is Ichiban off his nut on LSD constantly? It's kinda weird, even for Yakuza, same with dondoko island. I did it all but it's nowhere near the host club mini game.
I wanted to like this game, but I ran out of patience with the cut scenes. Not only are there many, but some are sooooooo long 🥱
@__Seraph I've been eyeing up Ishin as its on the PlayStation Plus catalogue, are these spin offs easy to get into without playing the main games?
In my opinion this is waaay too high on the list. The predecessor had much better plot and it was less bloated.
But I also think Metaphor deserves to be in the top 2 and I know people are going to cry a lot when it shows up next.
Its actually in the right spot.i have astrobot and final fantasy rebirth and like a dragon infinite wealth as top 3 video games of 2024.word up son
@Foxhound Eurogamer readers had Wukong at No. 27 I believe, and Metacritic had it No. 115. It's not THAT surprising is it?
@Fritz167 If it makes you feel better it would probably be 11# if they extended their goty by one 🤷🏼♀️ There were many great to good games this year, it's crazy that next year's selection will probably blow this one out the water
One of my most satisfying platinums, the dungeon grinding was brutal but I loved the combat, that characters, the story and the world. Excellent game and definitely top 3 for me, just below Rebirth and just above Astro
The real GOTY right here. This is a video game in its purest form. Fun from beginning to end.
One of the best experiences I had in years. Incredible game and my #1 game of the year and maybe decade so far.
So, the game is alright, but the story was a disappointment compared to the previous entry.
There were still some good moments but there was no closure.
I love the Like a Dragon series but this is the worst of the main-line series for me. They improved the combat from 7 but everything else about it I didn't like. The new mini-games did nothing for me, I found the Hawaii map dull, the story I found incredibly bad excluding Kiryu's part in Yokohama, weak villains, just a massive disappointment overall so yeah, I wouldn't put this in the top 10, nevermind 3rd.
@Foxhound who's gonna tell him?
I love the series, but 8 might be the worst possible entry alongside 1. Disappointment still stings.
@Cloud39472 I still have a high interest in it, for a series that is 20 years old next year, 1 game being a massive disappointment is a pretty solid record, so I wouldn't worry about it. But it seems from now on all the new games are original ideas from the "new" team so we shall see.
@UltimateOtaku91 I would say Ishin is for sure, but it's still very silly and has some grindy content you may consider bloat. maybe you'd prefer the feudal setting though? Story wise, they're disconnected from the main series yes. they do use the characters from the main series as a template though, so some cheeky references or likenesses may go over your head, but it's pretty minor overall i'd say.
Could never understand why some people hate cutscenes so much.
Been a big Yakuza fan since the PS2 days, and I just could not get into this entry for the life of me, despite it being the most critically-acclaimed one yet. The weak main story is one thing, but the lethargic pacing and the fact that the game is crammed with scene upon scene of characters standing around statically and having conversations that refuse to end just drove me up the wall! There's no sense of urgency to anything that happens in the game. It seems like it was made just to sap as much of the player's time as humanly possible.
@Dimey Fair. I remember there being so much hype about this game and assumed it had to be in the top 10
Well deserved! It’s the best Yakuza game I’ve played. It’s also the only new game I started a replay of this year. Ichiban should be number 1 though!
@Foxhound I hope their CEO doesn't find out
I love rpg’s, but I just can’t get through Yakuza and Persona (I’m sure that one will be in the top 2) games. I’ll definitely play FF 7 Rebirth and Silent Hill though. I’m also looking forward to the longlist to check out some lesser known games.
My number 2 for the year after Astro Bot (Balatro at number 3). The story stumbles a bit near the end but the game is absolutely fantastic. Should have guessed this would be #3 and Metaphor #2. Metaphor got the platinum for best RPG, whereas this took the gold one.
Cant wait for the next game. The series goes from strength to strength. Roll on Pirate Yakuza.
YES. This game is amazing. So much heart.
Infinite Wealth is my Game of the Year not because it’s the prettiest game or best combat system. It’s my GOTY because the characters make you feel as you’re adventuring alongside them. Ichiban is goofiest and most lovable guy there. These characters are like family as you explore Honolulu and Japan. From the new additions of Tomi & Chitose to the return of Adachi, Saeko & Nanba to playing as Kiryu MAYBE one last time, this cast of diverse personalities makes learning about each fun. It’s the only game this year where I wasn’t burnt out and wanted to replay it immediately. I have a 1 year rule for replaying games, but Infinite Wealth shattered that rule.
@Darude84 I wouldn't compare the RPG Yakuza games and persona, very different games
@UltimateOtaku91 I find it hard to believe, even objectively, that there were 10 better games than this one in 2024 but I get it wasn't for you.
On the topic of Ishin, if you find the series silly and bloated then give Ishin a wide berth. It's the worst of the series by far and whilst that still means it's still
a good game, the story is the least accessible as it focuses on a particular period of Japanese history and the grind in general and for the platinum, if you are interested in that, is ludicrous (I've done it twice).
Easily game of the year for me. Exceptional game, great characters, a decent story ane so much variety in terms of things to do and just a joy to play and platinum. I shall be re-platinuming it ahead of the release of Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Would have loved to have seen it get first place and if not that then 2nd behind Astro Bot, which I have not played yet but seems universally adored, would have been a fair outcome.
I won't complain too much though, seeing a Like A Dragon game getting this much love brings me much joy.
I have had this in my collection since the summer and have yet started it. It is a must for me in 2025 (among other things...)
