Elden Ring feels like everything FromSoftware has been doing for the past 12 years all at once. Sure, you could probably describe its latest title as open world Dark Souls and be more than halfway there, but to do so would ignore the obvious undertones of Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice that help make this new title stand apart from the rest. While we've been made to wait longer than usual, Elden Ring is genuinely shaping up to be the definitive FromSoftware game.
A three-hour session with this past weekend's Network Test is the reason we say that. An early look at the opening area of the experience reveals so much, including how combat and traversal work in The Lands Between. Our really big takeaway is that everything is so much more freeing: there is a dedicated jump button, mounts get you from place to place much faster, and the stamina gauge refuses to budge from bursting unless there's an enemy about.
Combat is much the same. Fights will feel familiar once an enemy has spotted you, with the usual satisfying backstabs the reward for getting behind them while the clashes of swords result in parries and damage dealt. Although, it is what happens in the lead up to those engagements that really makes the difference this time around. Now you can crouch and sneak about ala Sekiro, making it easier to get the drop on enemies or avoid them altogether if they prove too much of a match on your first try. The new jump button comes into play too: it's another way of creating distance, or it could be an unfair advantage if your adversary is vertically challenged.
Our time with Elden Ring's initial expanse was full of mystery and intrigue too. It doesn't take a genius to work out the Sites of Grace are the replacements for Bonfires, Runes are now what we call Souls, and the Estus Flask is still a thing in spirit, but venture outside of these known quantities and The Lands Between have some hidden surprises. Optional dungeons litter the landscape, providing hidden treasures for those who put in the effort to see them to their end.
Oh, and there's probably a boss standing between you and that fabled chest of goodies. We encountered a handful of them during our time with the Network Test, all of which ranged from grotesque to just downright creepy. FromSoftware is the master of boss design and mechanics, and we expect those skills will be employed in Elden Ring too. Just this first area is a great taster of what's to come.
This all feels like the Dark Souls of the past on a much bigger and grander scale. The opening area is large and vast, with many landmarks to discover and little caves and dungeons to rummage through. Enemies litter the landscape, items are everywhere to be found, and NPCs appear just when you need them. Materials can be picked from foliage, animals slaughtered for Runes, and mysteries on the horizon lure us away from the main objective of charging Stormveil Castle. With so much to see and do, a single three-hour session was never going to be quite enough. We tried to forget about how we could do this all over again with different builds just to make sure we had free time over the weekend.
It's welcoming then that there are still so many unknowns the game has up its back pocket. You're able to change the time of day from Sites of Grace, but how much of an impact will this actually have on the experience? It's seemingly minimal in the Network Test, with different sorts of enemies spawning depending on whether the sun is up or not, but could there be more dramatic consequences for doing something at night as opposed to the day later on in the game? We can't wait to find out and play around with the feature come February. And what was that persistent icon on the left-hand side of the screen all about? So many unknowns, and not too long of a wait until we actually find out what's what.
There was one problem, though. The Network Test defaults to prioritising the frame rate, and well, it doesn't do a very good job of it. 60 frames-per-second is the target, but it only achieves it some of the time with fairly consistent drops and stutters. It didn't ruin the fun whatsoever; it's just a little distracting and off-putting in the middle of a tense fight. Of course, though, there are still a few more months until Elden Ring's full release so this may not be a problem come February.
Good news for FromSoftware fans chomping at the bit for Elden Ring, then. The developer's latest project has been a long time coming, and after years of waiting, this Network Test is all the proof we need to say it's been worth those years of secrecy. This is a new type of Dark Souls, a new type of Bloodborne, and a new type of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice all at once. If you loved all of them or (somehow) just one of them, there's something to fall for in Elden Ring.
Elden Ring launches for PS5 and PS4 on 25th February 2022. Did you have the chance to play Elden Ring this past weekend with the Network Test too? What were your first thoughts and impressions? Share them in the comments below.

Sounds awesome. I get the sense that the changes in Bloodborne and Sekiro were always within the view of eventually combining everything into a refined open world souls-like amalgamation.
Didn't get a code unfortunately.
But more than happy with others' first impressions that I've read.
Love all their games.
Can't wait.
Paid £45 for launch ed. from Game Collection, and I very rarely pre order.
I really hope the rumors are true that bluepoint is working on bloodborne 2 because I’m not that impressed with elden ring.
@4kgk2 Yeah agreed. Bloodborne's the only From game I've gotten into and completed, largely because I far prefer that gothic style to the fantasy one of Souls and Elden Ring. Fingers crossed!
It was just OK unfortunately. The base gameplay was great, the parts that were wholesale lifted from Dark Souls 3. Jumping is just laughably janky and honestly doesn’t add all that much. The horse controls way too smooth, it’s not anything like a horse at all. The optional dungeons are very very linear and simple. The open world has a lot of empty space basically designed for you to ride through on your horse and ignore. The framerate was woeful. But then the bosses I encountered were as good as ever, the mobs were diverse and interesting and the level design of the actual Soulsy areas was great. Definitely a mixed bag but just hoping really that the newer elements don’t actually take away from the solid foundations come release day.
"Up its back pocket", eh?
I had a lot of fun playing the CNT. There was lots of exploring to do and you really didn't have to travel far to find something interesting.
The open world dungeons were all relatively simple and straightforward, but this was just the starter area. I suspect they will increase in difficulty and complexity further on.
Combat felt good as always with FromSoft games.
So far I didn't notice many elements taken from Bloodborne. There was an open world dungeon that felt like a chalice dungeon. And there was a beast boss. Besides that it felt very much like Dark Souls (have played part of the 2nd, currently doing the 1st remastered).
I did like that flasks have a chance to refill if you defeat a group of enemies. But I prefer Bloodborne's Rally mechanic where you regain some health by hitting enemies.
Anyway, if you like Dark Souls, you'll probably like Elden Ring. If you were always interested in Dark Souls, but thought it was too difficult, you'll like the spirit summons in Elden Ring. They make it significantly easier. Co-op is also not restricted anymore like in previous games. You only need an easy to craft item to summon players for help.
@lolwhatno I DOUBT YOU COULD EVEN IMAGINE IT
@4kgk2 I don't know about that. Making a game and remaking a game are two very different things.
Hyped for this, for me the problem with souls games is the repetition since after getting killed by the boss you have to fight all the way through again, but it seems in elder ring the checkpoint is always near the boss, so you can just try fighting the boss again.
@lolwhatno I had outright stutters fighting the boss. Full on freezing for half a second. It actually got me killed which wasn’t fantastic.
@LiamCroft "And what was that persistent icon on the left-hand side of the screen all about?" - The monument icon will appear on the left side of the screen meaning that you in an area you can summon spirits!
I was so looking forward to this game and for some reason got it into my head it would be different from their previous offerings and be more accessible. Sadly, from the previews and reactions to the playtest this seems to be just an open world Dark Souls with the same crushing and brutal difficulty.
I don't play hard games. That is my choice. I don't find challenging games fun and don't like my gaming sessions to be frustrating. I play for the world, exploration, story and usually set games to Easy if they have it just to up my enjoyment. So sadly, this game is now off my purchase radar. For those who love brutally hard games, I hope it is is everything you imagined.
@Fatewalker Ah, thank you!
Dark Souls is the only From Software series that really clicked with me. I know im about to piss a lot of people off right now but Bloodborne didn’t do it for me. I didn’t care for it… I’m willing to admit it may have been largely due to the FPS (coming from Dark Soups with 60). I’m willing to try it again if we get a PS5 upgraded version for sure.
Point being: I am so freaking excited to get another “Dark Souls” game with swords and magic and … ugh yeah this looks so good. Hopefully the FPS stutters get corrected though. I’d still play it of course but that kind of stuff is distracting from an otherwise amazing experience.
EDIT: (And I loved Demon Souls but felt Dark Souls was better with the one single world rather than warping to each level.)
@lolwhatno PS5. Might be optimisation but again, it’s a network test so I do think it’ll be fixed by release. I had more issues with the actual additions to the formula that won’t be fixed!
How hard is the combat? Never really played any Souls game
@4kgk2 I highly doubt it. Bloodborne 2 would have to be made by FromSoft if it will be anything near to what we experienced in the first game. BP is excellent, but I'm not sure they could imagine a sequel that lines up perfectly with the first game.
I made a rule some years ago about never pre ordering, but I may well break it for this one. Looks amazing
As someone who bounced off of Bloodborne (forgive me) and some similar games (The Surge, Lords of the Fallen), but LOVED Ashen... this feels like prettier, better-designed Ashen. And I REALLY want to play it.
Like all the dark souls games people will either love them or hate them..rarely do you find people who will think that they are just ok..i myself love them (apart from dark souls 2..crap) and i have to admit that bloodborne gave me a hard time (loved it but that frame rate..wow that sucked) and i love sekiro even if that bloody ape boss is just such a bugger to beat..looking forwards to losing myself in this one..
I played the Network test, I got two sessions only since I didn't have much time over the weekend.
The game is AMAZING, one of the best games I've ever played. The combat is not a mix of dark souls and Sekiro, it has a completely new flavor. The use of summons and weapon arts (Ashes of war they're called) changes everything. The posture break from Sekiro (it exists in Dark Souls but I'd compare it more to the one in Sekiro since it depends on how you approach the enemy), all of these are elements you should think about when fighting a boss. And this amounts to a new, more dynamic combat system that has its special character. I'm excited to see how the full game will force us to learn these new techniques like Sekiro did.
The open-world is full to the brim with stuff, you literally cannot pass 1 minute without seeing something, whether it being a pack of wolves, a giant, a dungeon, weird sea creatures floating around, eagles carrying swords that they attack you with, and all kinds of stuff. I've played many open-world games before and this doesn't even come close, they actually designed the whole open-world as they design their areas in their previous games. For instance, I started the game in a cave and then made my way out of it, got the horse, and then after a while I found a part of the beach which isn't accessible, but if you do some careful platforming you can get there, I roamed a while there and I found a cave, inside the there was a tunnel that got me to the same starting cave but from a different spot and I picked an item on the way, I was completely mind-blown after this. This is the same (door does not open from this side) trick but in an open world scheme.
The game is also hard, you have SO much more accessible tools at your disposal right from the start compared to Dark souls, but the bosses are not easy. You get easily swarmed by mobs and the bosses are fast and agile as in Sekiro, so you really need to be quick on your feet.
I'm super excited also for magic and faith builds which don't require now an insane amount of investment in stats to be playable, right from the start with 16 intelligence I was able to effectively use magic to fight off enemies. In my 6 hours I didn't have time to try other build unfortunately.
Can't wait to play the game in February and IMO we already have our game of the year for 2022. I think the network test even with the frame drops and the few glitches I encountered was the best gaming experience I had in 2021.
Can't wait for this one!! I've never played any souls style games though they looked amazing. I was close to getting Sekiro, but visually it looked grainy and off so I stepped down from that one.
I pre-ordered this game as soon as a release date was announced for Jan. After seeing some videos of this game MAN! I want to play it soooooo bad. I'm sure I'll die a bunch until I get used to the style and given I'm new to these types of games I can't wait to die a bunch hahaha, but those boss fights man they are intense. So looking forward to this one.
I expected better graphics tbh, maybe bluepoint can remake it in 10 years time.
@Dan_ozzzy189 I was surprised how good it looked on big Oled screen. I hope Bluepoint finally have chance working on their own game instead of remaking someone else IP's. -_-
They did good job on Demon's Souls, but there is zero new content. I expected the sixth Archstone to be added....
It looks nice and all, it just looks too much copy and paste with different skins. The animations especially of pretty much everything looks Ctrl+C-Ctrl+V, which might not be a bad thing but begs the question why Ubisoft gets punished for doing same - well yeah they release too many I know. This is a new IP so they could've tried some new things and left the gushing splashing blood thing behind for example.
@jrt87 @lolwhatno I prefer elden ring way of players getting some sort of checkpoint (I think it's a statue) before boss battle rather than doing a boss run or getting through a shortcut.
WOW, WOW, WOW... great read. TY!
So excited for this game... Horizon + Elden Ring is an epic combo for me!
Very hyped for this game... FromSoft haven't disappointed since I discovered this amazing team with Demon's Souls back in 2009.
@nessisonett you jaded old cynic, i'm sure it will be great
Played 4/5 tests. There are a lot of landscape errors where the ground goes invisible depending on camera on certain parts of the (limited) map that was available to play.
Triangle, which is your command functions, unfortunately if you press it too many times, your character will go right into an emote, can’t be cancelled.
Some seams visible at the shore.
Your horse is a spectral steed, it doesn’t eat or sleep and can double jump. There are wind lifts to propel your horse into the air to reach high places or to just escape.
Jumping in general is a welcome addition in mines as you can jump ledge to ledge without just walking off.
Monsters are either are in groups or alone. Some, like soldiers are able to summon every other soldier in the area with a trumpet blast. Others have similar methods like screeching.
Plenty of mini bosses everywhere. Some roaming, but they still get stuck on environment like the hill giant and the first gate.
Runes are souls. They drop from most anything. Animals galore, tons of wildlife and birds. Lots of birds.
Magic seems a bit OP right now. I beast clawed my way through the game, undead were no match for the litency of the dead spell.
Saw some floating jellyfish which turn red if bothered. Lots of human and beasts, some are extremely vertically challenged, which is why they attack en masse.
PVP. It seems optional. Invasions can still occur, but solo players have an advantage. You get a spirit summons that gives you your own spammy force of ghosts. Didn’t try it out. There are various summons I gather. The open world is so open, getting invaded could lead to a merry foot chase, and thus not make it worthwhile to invade. Not to mention you glow red and stand out.
Giant wagons can now be searched for loot in a loot box on the back.
Oh and besides getting an estus flask for health and magic, you get an alchemical one for brewing your own.
Weather, wind, and you still can’t swim.
@kris0000 Well, I played it. So I’m pretty sure I have more of a balanced opinion than most.
What I've seen seems... unpolished. I'm going to wait and let them clean up the game with patches before putting money down for it.
I'm probably more excited about Forspoken but given Elden Ring releases in between Forbidden West and GT7 it was always going to be a wait and see anyway.
Awesome stuff. All the DS YouTubers I saw are incredibly happy about this game and seem quite happy with the optimisation apart some minor flaws.
There is definitely a general very very positive consensus even though I never needed convincing.
This seems to be exactly the game I really want with so much freedom in it. I know people have a bias about soul games but I feel they allow you to play the way you want to solve ‘problems’ and feel true RPG unlike supposedly ‘easy’ games. Elden Ring takes that freedom to a new level really.
The only way I don't get this at launch will be if I end up playing Demon's Souls around the same time and don't want to rush it
@wiiware If that's true, this could be the first souls game that actually is for me! Not checkpoint at the boss has always been the worst part that puts me off from it, more than just difficulty of the boss alone. I don't mind retrying and learning it (to a point) as long as I don't have to waste my time getting to it.
I don't believe it yet though
@Flora2122 aye, ds was stunning, when I first saw it on my oled downstairs I almost hit the floor. I bought a Sony lcd for my ps5 but returned it after a day, just garbage. So I bought another smaller oled. Vinnny Teoh is right (and so am I), their fluidity with games is without parallel. Watch HDTV's latest video.
Cheers for the reply.
Good read, and that first image is too awesome. Looking forward to play it myself next year.
@4kgk2 Anyone who thinks BB2 is being developed by Bluepoint is just begging so hard for any rumors to be true lol. It was reported early on that the title that BP is developing for the first time is their own original title. Also it would be criminal if BB 2 is developed by anyone besides Fromsoft.
@TheArt
Yea no. Nothing to do with Ubi doing the EXACT same thing every time. Elden Ring is a genuine evolution from all the games they did before.
WHY would you want them to give up all the good stuff they did before and CP77 us?
Open world is a huge change with mounts and freedom and meaningful npc and changing gameplay mechanics in an intelligent evolution. Ubi have the same empty open worlds and same gameplay with no evolution like FOREVER.
Edit
It’s funny on the other spectrum a lot of silly people were already bt*ing when they saw a jump button in the leak. 🤷🏼♂️
Great evolution without forgetting their DNA is the best way to go.
‘gushing splashing blood ‘ is awesome and I’d be sad if it became censored.
@JJ2 Yes the evolution here is open world but some beta testers are saying is mostly empty which is worrying. Not saying the gushing blood should be censored, saying they could try new animations for it is all. Looking forward to reviews though because it looks good as always.
Empty?! What does it mean empty open world?! I felt it absolutely crowded with enemies, animals, sources to gather, npcs, caves, shortcuts, hidden treasures ..For me it was anything but empty. I know we are experiencing things differently but this is false.
@NEStalgia I can already see myself getting killed over and over by that horse riding knight boss at the opening plain since it's not a hassle to replay the boss fight. I never leave the opening plain until I can beat him 😂
@jmac1686 late reply, but - i've avoided souls games for years for the same reason. never thought i'd enjoy them. tbh, i'm a total button-masher.
with all the elden ring hype, though, and how interesting it looks, i decided just yesterday to grab a copy of dark souls remastered, and MAAAN. it's definitely hard, but it's not quite as frustrating as people make it out to be, and i'm a controller-thrower, BIG time. i thought it'd be torture. the first boss fight alone had me yelling at the TV, but out of excitement and tension rather than sheer frustration.
if you get a chance to try one of these games out, man, take it. you might be really, REALLY, pleasantly surprised. i absolutely thought i'd hate these games for YEARS. i'm very much not the target audience.
but i think i fell in love with these games last night. cheers
@sanguinekhajiit I’d stock up on some spare controllers if you’re going to carry on playing
"This is [...] a new type of Bloodborne"
You're kidding, right?
From the videos made of the beta, aside from some scarce enemy and environment designs I don't see anything even remotely Bloodborne.
Which is too bad, because for me BB is the best game From has made until now.
Can't help feeling a bit disappointed that From chose to follow the Souls formula for Elden Ring, even though (excluding Sekiro), the last games released were Dark Souls 3 and Demon's Souls Remake, both with the same fighting mechanics and medieval settings. It seems a bit too much of the same thing to me, in spite of the cool new features Elden Ring has.
On top of that, after almost 7 years, there's still no official word on a new Bloodborne game, not even on a proper Remaster of the first one... only rumors and (for now false) hope.
Even if an eventual Bloodborne 2 started development this year, it will take at least another 4-5 years before it gets released (delays included), which will amount to a total of 11-12 years between releases... extremely long time in "BB fan" years.
im extremely hyped for this game. replaying DS3 for the zillionth time in anticipation
@SterlingEyes HAHA yeah the difficulty has def already spiked pretty hard but i'm approaching it patiently and staying super ~zen~ and appreciating the challenge. i know i'm only just getting started and nowhere near the hellish bits, but i'm actually really looking forward to the next big spike in difficulty lol
@jmac1686 Same I tried Demon's Souls PS3 and Bloodborne 1 recently, kept dying against the simplest of enemies/bosses.
I do hope those that enjoy these games have fun though! They're just not for me.
I rarely preorder games anymore especially collectors editions. This was definitely worth the preorder for the collectors edition I’m quite excited for this game
