April's PS Plus Essential games have been officially announced, and as per usual, we're looking at three titles spread across PS5 and PS4. At a glance, however, we're tempted to say that this is one of the weaker months in recent memory.
We start with Immortals of Aveum. A decent game by almost all accounts, but this magical shooter really struggled make an impact when it launched just last year. It was met with lukewarm reviews and poor sales — but then PS Plus might be the perfect place for such a product, allowing more players to try the game for themselves.
Immortals is flanked by Minecraft Legends — a real-time strategy take on the eternally popular brand — and indie action platformer Skul: The Hero Slayer. The latter is actually held in rather high regard amongst those who have played it.
But what do you think of April's PS Plus Essential games? As always, vote in our polls, and then give us an honest opinion in the comments section below.

Nothing at all for me
Probably skip all of these. I think Immortals is a nice type of game to throw on Plus, but it looks so generic to me, I have literally no interest in it at all.
I'm not into Minecraft at all, so a spinoff of that is meh.
Skul looks kind of neat and has good reviews, but I still haven't finished Rogue Legacy 2, so I just don't think I want another platforming rogue-lite to play.
Yeah, quite happy tbh. Been meaning to pick up Immortals on a sale, so that's a bonus being on plus, and Skul looks interesting too. Good selection.
Eh, sort of a crap selection. Not sure if I’ll even redeem them
Prices go up but games stays the same.
Nah, I've got really no interest in any of these games. But that's okay, between Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, South Park Snow Day!, Stellar Blade, Helldivers II, and Alone in the Dark, I've got more than enough to play right now. There's also NG+ in Spider-Man 2 and Alan Wake II for when I'm done with those.
I seem to be one of the few who were interested in Skul, and I'm happy to dip into Aveum. Minecraft isn't really my thing, but I'm sure someone will enjoy it.
Only Aveum for me, but 1 game I'm interested in a month is fine! I have such a backlog and limited time to play so I can't get to them that quickly
This is actually a pretty good selection all around. Only major problem with me is that I can't play Immortals of Aveum yet because I don't have a PS5
Aveum looks interesting, looking forward to giving it a spin. Same with Skul. 0 interest in the Minecraft spin-off, but I’m it’ll suit some folks that want a more chill game.
Immortals of Aveum, let's go!
I'll definitely be checking out Skul.
@RudeAnimat0r yeah I’m in the same boat, none of those interest me in the slightest
I let my PS Plus subscription lapse 6 months ago and I've haven't even noticed.
Worst ever selection is a bold statement. But I think this is perhaps the worst ever selection.
Another month another awful selection
My sub lapses mid-April. Looking forward to not renewing!
I'll try Immortals not really interested in the other games.
A Good Selection, Immortals is the type of game a lot of people have looked at but shied away from, whether due to cost or a Backlog of Games - Now we have a Game as part of our Subscription that we may never have played, let alone owned. We need to encourage Developers to launch New Ideas, rather than follow the Sequel or next years iteration path.
Hopefully, whatever Sony Pays the Developer of Immortal to put his on Essential helps keep the Studio looking into new ideas.
I want to play Immortals of Aveum down the line, I like different FPSs, but Skul: The Hero Slayer is attractive too!!
Looking forward Immortals. I wanted it since launch.
Terrible selection for me, Immortals is the highlight and it looks so boring and bland that I find it shocking that someone gave the greenlight to not only release it but charge full price!
For my particular tastes, the selection has been dire for the better part of a year now.
I've not been playing online much either, so if it weren't for the fact that I bought a few years worth of subs a while back, I'd have let PS Plus lapse a while ago.
It's a shame you can't pause restart your sub when you're not making use of it.
Skul is really really good. Also really really cheap on sales, but hey.
I really struggle to remember a month worse than this.
@djlard I loved it. It had me gripped. Looks great but bit fuzzy maybe
I wanted to play Immortals but not enough to pay. So yes.
Its ok.word up son
Everyone was waiting for immortals to hit a sub service to try it. Now everyone is complaining that it’s on there.
I will give immortals a try as it looks interesting, but I've already tried Minecraft Legends and it was mediocre at best.
I wanted to get Immortals so that’s a win for me. I confused Minecraft Legends with Minecraft Dungeons, it’s even better. I want to try it!
It’s really a great month for me.
First person games don't do it for me. I played Doom on my old Amiga and decided that I can't suspend disbelief with FP games.
Minecraft is like Lego but without the fun.
This month is a total pass for me
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Everyone complains every month regardless of what’s on there. April could be Tekken 8, Baldurs Gate 3 and Stellar Blade and there would still be 50 comments like “Such a disappointment, can’t wait for my sub to lapse, can’t believe I pay £5 a month for this S*%^”
I might try Immortals of Aveum, but overall it's a pretty meh month.
ps minus 👎 scam service should’ve been a thing of the past about 4 years ago
To be fair I'm not at all happy as already have immortals and to be honest think this will change people's opinion, it is a pretty decent game, gameplay is quite smooth and story is good enough to keep you going. Don't think this game was marketed properly and fell very short. As for the other 2 games they just don't interest me at all
A very dull line up
Honestly I'm hoping Immortals of Aveum gets a second wind out of this to help save that studio and keep EA publishing new IP like this. People thumbing their nose at it for being "generic" should probably get their eyes examined. Not say this game is going to change their world or anything, but its certainly worth a spin.
I'm not really interested but I am willing to try out Immortals
I wanted o try Immortals out so will get around to it one day but no time soon, the rest are not for me.
I know it won't happen but if they are really going to abandon PSVR2 they may should give us a VR game a month now too.
Better than last month, Immortals of.... seems interesting.
I'm not mad at the selection. I always like it when they put games on there that I really had no intention of buying to begin with. It gives me the opportunity to try something I normally wouldn't. The months I don't like are the ones when they put some really popular game up that most people already own. I do wish they would pit more sim games. Love those things
Minecraft Legends, but already have it. Never heard of the other two, but looking at the reviews they both look rubbish so will give both a miss. When are we going to actually get some proper good games?
We need more JRPGS to be given away.
Not really fussed about any of them. So not really for me.
Probably first time I voted for crap selection - it's because really don't want to try out any of them. But not the end of world for me, I have still lots to play
Nothing this month that interests me ,I'll still claim them though, gonna have months that aren't bangers ,but all gd loads of gsmes in my backlog lol:)
I gave Immortals a rent and it got really old really quick, so I won't be going back. Skul isn't really my type of game. That leaves Minecraft Legends, which I guess I'll give a shot. Overall not a great month for me. Maybe next time.
Bag off dogs brown bum gems, I'd leave psplus if it wasn't for the streaming
Cancelled PS essential due to price increase. Being greedy for essential. As a by product I won't buy any PS games. Ps5 is out 3+ years and not one good ps5 only game out, all dumbed down so backwards compatible. Rumours of ps6. They are joking right. ?? 😭
One of those rare months that I won't even add them to library. Might have given Aveum a go if the platinum wasn't annoying.
Picked enough up in the spring sale to keep me occupied for a while anyway.
@TheSirSpence doom was never released on the amiga.
Immortals of Aveum is well worth a go, particularly if like me you are burned out on open world games that waste your time. Playing the trial now and genuinely enjoying the early game and the lore. Novel idea for a game and can see it was well thought out.
It's a meme at this point to even ask this question haha
The only reason to have PS+ essential.os for online play as the games we get of late have been terrible.
They're proper sh*te aren't they 🤣 I like ps plus am on premium but this is the worst month this year and that includes foamstars ...
Skull is probably fair. I don't know anything about it but probably really good and I just don't know any better.
Minecraft Legends is not bad but not great. I'd rather play a Pikmin clone from old consoles or other strategy games I think Legends lacks depth and it being Minecraft doesn't help. I thought Dungeons was pretty weak and as a Minecraft player that's modded it for 10 years sure I'll give other things a try even eh spinoffs even though I would try more gem shovelware more so. I just think it's lacking. Then again I hated Pikmin 4's changes to be more mainstream generic and boring in game design besides the few things I liked about it of Ice Pikmin and Oatchi WHEN he was a captain/Pikmin expanded, the upgrades are eh, the night levels were good but lacking depth in areas, not the character creator even from the trailer it was pointless, eh gyro ruined when 1-3 Wii and I assume the Joycon based 3 Deluxe isn't as great as a pointer is still fair then 4's garbage gyro and the 5 days Oatchi beginning of the game no swimming is stupid. The rest is passable for Pikmin but still wasn't fun so.....
Aveum flopped when to me I was like thank you a story driven fantasy shooter. The world nope. Me ok you want Indie/AAA military games fine. The few SWAT ones I've seen seem fine but I'm looking for something different and Bright Memory Infinite while good is 1 game. Like Titanfall 2 is good but since I haven't cared for a single modern AAA shooter because they are all open worlds, live service or multiplayer. Can I not get a decent linear one to succeed then some formulaic games. Yes it's old design but at least it isn't big, filler and eh gameplay ideas that I don't want to buy. I buy old shooters these days. Indies may have it but I'm not buying Doom old school clones I don't care for them even if great games.
I'm still seeking out any of the trend period of 7th gen shooters (not because I think they are good either even platformers or racing games from 5-6th gen are better then these trending eh shooters) for their 1 key mechanic as marketable and being the only cool thing about them or memorable, eh story and eh cover based systems for third person shooters and whatever got of first person shooters besides the 5-6th gen games picked up.
Because we have just repetitive games themes and gameplay and I'm at this point current gen abandoning the shooter genre. Sure Tiny Tina/Outriders are fine but even then I want something else.
If Judas fails or Bioshock 4 then I just have a point proved about Judas in the veteran devs that want to keep going with an IP they love (just without the licensing) and the world goes nope to it. I get Calisto may have done stuff a certain way then Dead Space remake's appeal or heck it's name/branding as also a factor for people as simple as that can be of a reason too besides the polish or ideas presented but even still.
I don't care for the character/loot in Aveum but still doesn't mean I don't want a game to try something different theming wise even if baby steps of well yeah a looting system and more 'modern' but the theming baby steps is enough for me and we can't even have that.
Like Doom or alternate history like Wolfenstein we need more going on with some linear/semi shooters and different themes or not formuliac/trending gameplay something different.
They're a fine lineup I'm only not excited about because I don't have the appropriate hardware for one and have the much more appropriate hardware for the others. But as usual, good luck expressing it in the poll without sounding bored stiff at best.
Nah won’t even redeem these.
@Carrnage If diverse games such as Demon’s Souls, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Final Fantasy XVI, Rift Apart and the brilliant Returnal all don’t speak to you, then that’s a bummer. But you can’t say that there aren’t any good PS5 exclusives out there. I agree there could be more by now though.
I turned down immortals when it was on sale in Asda for like 3 quid because it looked crap. Skul might get a little blast on remote play while I'm at work. Minecraft will sit the the library never been downloaded most likely.
Not a very impressive month for me
As almost every month, I don't really care about the Plus games. I have everything I need on disc, and very few games digital.
But Immortals might be worth a look.
@Frmknst I'd much rather pay half the price and skip the "free" games, given how rarely they're both available for PS4 and in a genre I'm interested in.
Ithere is sOooo much crap on ps store I hardly ever play it until Stella blade come out I've bought alot of games over the last year and sold them not long after as games today are crap and ps store should be ashamed of themselves
@Samueljkelly yeah yeah I bought immortals you weren't missing anything what a pile of dung trash that game was
